In the late '60s and early '70s, Chevrolet's uncompromising engineering and styling carried on a proud tradition of pickup trucks started back in 1930. Fenderlee "Fleetside" trucks were available in four weight/bed classes includign the immensely popular shortbed C10, "C" indicating two-wheel drive. Chevy offered several powerplant options throughout the '60s, finally settling on 250ci, 261ci, and 292ci " straight sixes" to 307ci, 350ci, and 396ci V8s by 1969. Powerplants topped out with the workhourse 400ci V8 in 1972.

 

Chevy started to offer a more modern look and an easier ride, starting in 1967, tying in with GM's new directive to market the pickup truck as comfortable and versatile general-purpose transportation, not just a work vehicle. Adding coil-spring rear suspension to all four suspension points certainly helped, and optional leaf-spring rear suspension could make the ride even smoother, Side marker lights were added, and the classic-looking smaller rear window was no longer offered in 1968. A newly designed grille was added in 1969, which was updated again in 1970, and even more radically again in 1971. More importantly, 1971 brought the introduction of the Sierra trim package, which offered more comfortably fitted interiors and a new two-tone paint scheme with side molding options. By the early '70s, Chevy's plan to make the once-workaday pickup truck a favorite among city dwellers, blue-collar workmen, farmers, and ranchers proved highly successful and popular, and remains so to this day.
