The Camaro debuted in 1967 as Chevrolet's entru in to the "pony car" category. It had a long hood, short rear deck styling, with a clean and sleek design. The axiom of the day was "win on Sunday, sell on Monday," referring to how success on the racetrack translated into buyer interest in the showroom. All-new sheet metal for the 1969 model year made the '9s strikingly attractive.

The Z/28 was developed to compete in the Trans Am racing series, and compete it did. Z/28 Camaro won the Trans Am championship in 1968 and 1969.

Street-legal Z/28 were wolves in sheep's clothing, barely-tamed race cars. Powered by a high-revving 302 cubic inch V-8 with dual exhausts and four-barrel carb, modestly rated at 290 horsepower, the lightweight "Z" was a hot performer. In 1969, almost 20,000 Z/28s were sold.
