1954. Cars were big and beautiful. With the guiding vision of Presiden Ed Cole, and the designing genius of Harley Earl, GM was distinguishing itself in the automotive industry. '53 had been its breakout year (the year Chevrolet gave all its cars a serious face-lift) and '54 Design chief Earl was greatly influenced by the look of military aircraft (like the famous World War Two P-38). He was bringing to life a wider and more modern car. Epitomizing this visually daring direction was the '54 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible. With its high compression Blue Flame 6 engine (235 cid, 115 hp) and the option fo Powerglide automatic transmission, this new model was powerful as well as stylish. For '54 there was a new full-width horizontal grille bar---enough chrome to give thsi car a shiny, headlight-to-headlight grin. A GM adverisement from '54 boasted that the Bel Aire, "Puts the pleasure back in driving." With all the amenities of a high-priced car, Chevrolet was really strutting its stuff with this line. Pulling one of these wonderful Bel Air models into your garage. you wer not just "keeping up with the Joneses," you were positively making them jealous. After 1954 came the famous "shoebox" styling of virtually all the new 1955 models. Today there is more interest in the pre '55 Chevrolet cars and especially the convertibles.
