ERTL - Chevy Corvette Sting Ray (1963, 1/18 scale diecast model car, Green)

THE HISTORY OF THE #614 CORVETTE STING RAY

First raced in 1962 after only one day of preparation and 2500 miles on the odometer, #614 is among the earliest Corvette Sting Rays produced. Beginning in SCCA's CP class (pending production of 100 car), this Corvette was later moved to the A production class for the balance of the 1963 season, then to C Modified for 1964. The #614 Corvette was successful in Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) events, including both half mile drags and Bonneville Speed Trails.

One of the original seven Z06 Sting Rays built by Chevrolet to beat the Shelby Cobras, the Vette was prepared for competition in 1963 by Bob Joehnck of Santa Barbara, California. It gained inital sponsorship from Washburn Chevrolet located at 614 Chapala Street -hence the car number 614. Bob Bondurant was the first driver of this car from 1962-64. He took delivery of the ar at the factory in St. Louis, Missouri on a Monday and drove it to Santa Barbara, California. The first race was at Riverside Raceway on the following Saturday in 1962. When Bondurant followed his racing career to Europe, the 614 was driven by Tony Settember for the balance of its racing career.

In 1987, the famous "Split Window" Corvette was restored by Vic Edelbrock in its original color. The 327 Chevey engine generates over 450 horsepower, thanks to Edelbrock equipment and a skilled Edelbrock crew. It's kept "race-ready" by Mike Eddy of the Edelbrock Corporation and is driven by Vic Edelbrock at Vintage car races across the country. Look for this car at tracks such as Sear Point, Willow Springs and Laguna Seca in California as well as Watkins Glen in New York.
