God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Hey You There
By Lu Su
One reader had inquired if one day I might steer my essays towards the mine fields of politics and give my thoughts on the President elect. Yes, I would like to foray into this arena someday soon. It is not because I enjoy pain or conflict. As mentioned before and from my observation, God primarily uses two institutions to channel blessing onto man. The first institution is Marriage. The second institution is Government. So of course, I eventually want to talk about marriage, government, and the politics of both. I've noticed that our society appears to be becoming more secular in nature and we seem to be systematically removing God from both institutions. Last year in New Jersey, for the first time in history, Christmas trees and Christmas music were banned in certain public locations. And for the first time in the history of our young government, we have minted and put into circulation new coins that no longer have the inscription "In God We Trust" (check it out).
Just yesterday, my wife made a funny comment related to politics. As many of you probably know, the President-elect Barack Obama has asked Senator Hillary Clinton to become the next US Secretary of State.
"Wow", I said. "That's kind of surprising because those two Democratic candidates seemed to have really slugged it out with each other during their campaign to become the party's first pick." I also thought it was a bit presumptuous that Hilary, after bowing out of the race, making it known to the general populace that she would accept the VP candidate position. I just didn't think Barack and Hillary had much of a working relationship with each other.
My wife then said, "I think Barack is following that old proverb: Hold your friends close, but hold your enemies even closer."
Well, in three months time I just realized I've already accumulated several thoughts centered on the subject of how to increase your chances of receiving a blessing. Without thinking about it, I've started a little mini series. Let's quickly recap. A blessing is something good and ultimately comes from God. Know where to place your trust. Realization of a blessing first starts with the realization of God. Avoid by all means loving the blessing more than the blessor. And the most recent, beware of free cans of blueberry pie filling handed out by local food pantries; which when translated into spiritual terms, do not make Cain your role model.
I can hear some thoughts, "Lu, why do you just keep talking about knowing this and knowing that? Can't you just stay on the subject of how to get a blessing and keep God out of this? Can't you be like other New Age spiritual writers by keeping God out of your philosophy and just give me a list of things that I need to do? You know something like meditate, sit in an uncomfortable position, enter a hut and sweat, climb a mountain, do something that physically taxes your body, concentrate real hard, or go perform some nobel
task. Certainly just having a bunch of head knowledge on the subject of blessing can't be sufficient enough for me to obtain the stuff I want in my life. Don't you have to first do stuff and then get some sort of reward from it? Where is your To Do list"
On the subject of blessing, please slow down the pace of your reading here so you do not miss this. The focus of this essay is on this very next sentence. Before you DO anything, KNOW who God is. Before you DO anything, KNOW who you are. When you do not know who you are and who God is, your will easily get sidetracked and the actions you perform can be easily become misguided.
When God handed down the 15 commandments to Moses on 3 tablets of stone, God says something very significant. Don't you remember in Mel Brook's History of the World, Moses is coming down the mountain? Moses is carrying 3 tablets of stone. He slips and accidentally dropped one of the stone tablets and it shatters into pieces, so Moses ends up with presenting us with only 10 commandments. There is a very significant verse that comes right before the God's laid down the law (the 10 commandment). I think many of us easily get caught up in "just tell me what to do", so we focus on the to do list. The sentence right before God's top 10 list reads:
"And God spoke all these words: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
-Exodus 20:1-2
So before you get busy and start doing stuff. Before you go tackle some guru's to do list. Before you start practicing some hidden secret that has been hidden all these years, but now revealed for $14.99. God wants us to know who he is and who you are. God said, "I am the LORD your God" and YOU are the one whom he wants to rescue you out of slavery. Why is this important? If you do not first know this, then tackling the to do list then becomes meaningless. If God does not exist or is not your Lord, than why do anything nobel? If God does not exist, why be good? What difference does it make? Perhaps you want to do good because it makes you feel good? Well, I'm sure I can find people who feel good when they do evil.
"But wait a minute, this is the 21st century. We abolished slavery a long time ago," says the inquisitive reader.
The scriptures say that before we knew God, we are are slaves to something. God implemented his rescue plan by incarnating a couple thousand years ago.
I don't know how many of you caught the last TV series called West Wing. Alan Alda had played a California Senator running for the office of the President. In this TV series, Alan Alda plays the role of an honest, hard working public official who happens to be a non-theist (does not believe in God). The Senator makes the argument that he cannot believe in God because when God walked the earth over 2000 years ago, he did nothing to rid slavery. Whoever wrote that line for Alan Alda to say, failed to see the big picture. Now I understand why he wrote that, because to this person slavery is very evil. So naturally God would want to confront this. But God did confront the slavery that bound us to death -and provided an escape route for us. The scriptures tell us that we are all slaves - slaves to sin. The Senator was wrong. God did come to earth and he did rescued many and continues to rescue more of us out of this bondage.
The last point I want to make is to go back to the first part of the sentence which says, "And God SPOKE all these WORDS". Know that we have a God that can speak and can use words.
Many of these new age spirituality books will often make claims that you are a god, but you don't know you are a god; or that the universe has some sort of consciousness. This is a very vague statement. Like politicians, there is a big need to say something that sounds good but don't be forthcoming on the details. What are they calling the universe? Are they claiming that the sun, moon, stars, and galaxies have some sort of collective consciousness? Does this consciousness have the ability to use words and speak?
From my take on it, I see no evidence that the sun, moon, stars and other heavenly bodies (or cold space itself) has a consciousness. From my point of view, the universe neither feels nor perceives; therefore the universe neither cares for you nor is it even aware of your existence.
Allow me to contrast this philosophy with just a few lines of scripture.
So Moses thought, "I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up." When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, "Moses! Moses!" -Exodus 3:3-4
Again the LORD called, "Samuel!" -1 Samuel 3:6
"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, -Luke 10:41
We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? -Acts 26:14
God knows us and can even speak our name! We are a somebody to God. To many of these New Age religions you are a nobody (an aberration, a quantum flux, or just a wiggle in time). Notice when God spoke to all of these people he didn't say, "Hey you!" or "Excuse me, whoever you are". He called them by their first name. Note that Saul who was most likely fluent in at least three different languages, specifically says that the that the Lord spoke to him in Aramaic. This is incredible, we have a God that knows us by our first name AND speaks our own language.
So is the conscious universe capable of speech? If it is capable of speech can it understand different languages and dialects? Maybe this consciousness doesn't understand the word "no". So you might be concentrating on the thought of "no sickness in my life" and because the universe doesn't understand the word "no" it might thinking you want sickness in your life? The word for "no" in Abasakur (a language used in Papaua New Guinea) is "oya". The word for "no" in Estonian is "ei" both of these words sound like "yeah" in the English language. Is this consciousness capable of of hearing the same sound but understanding it properly in its own language?
If you know who you are. And if you know who God is. Besides protecting you from aberrant and empty philosophies, you will at least be pointed in the right direction on this journey. Once you get with the program; once you get with God's program, then the setting is ideal and ripe for God to shower blessing on you.
