God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Blessing Intro

"What is a Blessing?", asked my nine year old son Joshua.
My family was seated at the table for supper. I had just finished praying and had used that word "blessing" in my prayer.. It's a tradition in my house that one lucky family member will say a quick prayer and give thanks for meal that we are about to scarf down. In my household, it's actually kind of comical. My family will all sit down and then immediately my four kids in silence will start pointing their finger at another sibling. If I select one of my sons 90% of the time I get these immediately sense of outrage and hear some type of verbal court-room like argument on why it couldn't possibly their turn.
Because I was hungry and wasn't in the mood to hear multiple sons give me arguments on why it wasn't their turn, I prayed.
"Man!", I thought to myself. My wife and I probably have used the word "blessing" in every one of our prayers. It probably also comes up in normal conversation with her too. Soafter year and years of hearing this word, my son (who turns 10 today!) only now asks me for the meaning of the word "blessing"?
Well better late then never I thought. And I guess I shouldn't be upset because it's actually a good question. And because he posed the question proves that he was actually listening. Any parent should be happy about that. Then I thought about how many people far older than my son who have heard the word "Blessing" or "God" more times than my son, but have never inquired or explored its meaning. How sad I thought.
"Well, a blessing is something that comes from God", I replied. Blessings can come in so many ways and forms and many ways. I thought to myself, "How am I going to give a simple answer that a 4, 7, and 9 year old will understand?"
"It's...... It is uh", as I stammered to find the right words.
"It's something Good that comes from God", interjected my wife. Yes, my better half to the rescue. What a great answer I thought.
But it is only a good answer if you believe in God. It's a totally absurd answer if you do not. I came to the realization that I have used the word "blessing" in many of my past essays, but have never conveyed what a blessing is until now. I would imagine for a non-theist, when they see the results of a "blessing", they must automatically translate that to "good fortune", "good luck", or "his own diligent effort has now paid off". Unfortunately this type of translation provides no credit for the Creator.
Well, whether you believe in God or not, practically everyone wants a blessing or at least good fortune. I would think all of us that engage in marketing would also would be receptive to receiving a blessing or good fortune. So I thought next week I would focus on one of those self help guides on how to increase your chances of receiving a blessing (or good fortune). No, it's not one of those seven step programs to get rich or make baldness go away. But stay tuned next week. I'm willing to bet that if you take my advice seriously, your life will dramatically change. And change for the better.
I want to close with powerful and beautiful words that were spoken to me this week by someone totally in love with God. She lives thousands of miles away from me. But despite living in a small foreign country on the verge of collapse, rocked with turmoil, violence, daily rapes and murders, she was still blessed me with these words. These are the same words that God gave Moses a few thousand years ago who then instructed Aaron (the first high priest) to use when blessing the people of God. If you are one of God's children, pay attention here, these words of blessing are from God and meant for you.
"The LORD bless you
and keep you;
the LORD make his face shine upon you
and be gracious to you;
the LORD turn his face toward you
and give you peace."
-Numbers 6: 24:26
