God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
In God We Trust
By Lu Su
One long time customer told me this week that he enjoys reading my articles. Although he is of a different faith, he respects my faith and point of view. He also mentioned that he thought some of the essays were a little bit on the long side. "A little bit on the long side", I thought to myself. That's a very kind way of expressing the thought that I have, "diarrhea of mouth". I grew up in upstate New York and this happened to be my 8th grade health teacher's favorite phrase. He would wield these particular words in an effort to scold pupils who either spoke too much or spoke at inappropriate times. Well I do appreciate the constructive criticism and will try harder to heed it. But you know when diarrhea gets going, it's sometime hard to stop.
What a tumultuous couple of weeks? And is the worst over or is this just the begriming? There has been much anxiety here in the US and abroad. It goes to show you how interconnected so many of the inhabitants of this earth have become. What started out as a series of poor decisions made right here in America has rippled out. Rippled out? Perhaps a better analogy is that a financial earthquake hit America, with Wall Street being at the epicenter. Now the aftershocks are being felt at all levels of our economy (even Joe the plumber is feeling it too). Tsunamis have already departed our shores. Its negative effects and destructive power is moving toward Americans and towards people elsewhere in the world at a very quick pace. I have no doubt that every inhabitant on this earth will be affected by this in some way. All our direct trading partners have been directly affected. Some are in even worse shape than we are at this time. All of the trading partners' trading partners will be affected and so on. The ability to provide aid and assistance to those countries in dire need has just been compromised. You know, they do not call America a super-power for nothing. Having the power to do great good also translates in the power to do great harm.
This week alone, I've read many disheartening stories in the newspaper. A couple of days ago an elderly woman committed suicide; apparently her small nest egg and her home had been swallowed up in the financial crisis. Another murders his financial advisor/broker for "losing all his money" and then shoots himself. Stock prices of many formerly stalwart companies have hit never seen before lows. Trillions of dollars of perceived wealth have vaporized. It is enough to get people worried for themselves and their children.
Well this might be a good time for a blessing. A blessing as established last time as something good that comes from God. So one of the first things you can do to increase your chances of receiving a blessing is to know where NOT to put your ultimate trust. Our ultimate trust is NOT in the Federal Reserve or it's officers. It's also NOT in gold or property. Our ultimate faith better NOT be in a $700 billion dollar rescue package. Our ultimate faith is not in our government or our President. Our ultimate trust is NOT in the American people. Our ultimate trust is NOT in our retirement account (if you happen to have/had one). If your ultimate trust is in humans or in property, let me warn you know that you are setting yourself up for one big disappointment. Take it from a person that had bigger ups and downs than you. Take his advice:
But I trust in you, O LORD;
I say, "You are my God."
Psalm 31:14
If you are God's child, know that God has already obligated himself to take care of you. Since you are his child, you are his responsibility. What, you think that you know how to take care of your children better than God knows how to take care of his? Or perhaps you think that you are more capable than God in serving as a guardian? Know this, we worship a God that is not immune to pain and suffering. We have a God that knows first hand what hunger and thirst feels like. We have a God that knows what it feels like to be betrayed. We have a God that knows what loneliness feels like. We worship a God that have feelings. Now again, if you are God's child, you need to give some measure of trust to God. So pay attention here. These words were spoken by God himself and meant for you.
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Matthew 6: 25-34
