Loving the Blessing more than the Blesser
By Lu Su

Back onto the subject of blessing and what you can do to increase your chances of getting one. It's been a few weeks so allow me to review what has been covered in two sentences. A blessing is something good. A blessing ultimately comes from God. Now it's important that you understand that a blessing is more than just a phrase or a wish -like "Happy Thanksgiving", "Happy ground hogs day", or my favorite "Have a nice day!". It's a wish plus equipping the beneficiaries with the means of achieving an end goal. The very first account of God giving out a blessing is found in the first book of Moses called Genesis.

And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day. -Genesis 1:20-23

And the first blessing God gives man occurs the next day.

And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." -Genesis 1:24-28

I find it very interesting where the placement of "And God saw that it was good" got placed in the second paragraph. This short sentence comes after the creation of animals, but before the creation of man. That does not necessarily mean that man is bad, but I personally would have preferred the sentence to come after the creation of man. Also notice that we are charge with more than just to increase in number, we are given much much more responsibility. If we are to rule, we need to do so responsibly. Many text books today equate man as being just another animal -no better no worse. The scriptures do not support that claim.

Notice that God basically blesses everything that has a heartbeat and he equips it with the means of achieving that goal. Imagine if God gave us this goal to be fruitful and increase in number, but didn't provide us with a reproductive system or a mate. I don't know about you, but I would be hard pressed to design either of the two. I can't even draw a human being, so I can forget about creating a reproductive system for one. This reminds me of a line from a movie long ago: This teacher standing in front of his classroom and has this big picture of a earthworm on the black board.

He then asks the obvious question, "Name one creature that is capable of both sexual and asexual reproduction, but prefers reproduce asexually?"
The student replies, "......Your wife?"

Eleven chapters later God blesses Abraham.

"I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."
-Genesis 12:2:3

If you just read a few chapters around this one, you see God blesses Abraham generously. God blesses Abraham by providing him with a son in his old age (when his wife was very old and past her conceiving years). God also blesses Abraham with great material wealth too. And when Abraham was in his old age, he passes this blessing to his son Isaac. Like I mentioned before, a blessing was more than some phrase you say after someone sneezes, "bless you". When Abraham passed the blessing to his son Isaac, it came with the bulk of the family's fortune.

So a blessing involves property? It isn't a requirement, but often it does. But this is where a great majority of people get derailed off their spiritual journey. Since there is nothing wrong with having wealth, it becomes something very alluring to go pursue. Where people get off track is when they start pursuing God's things instead of pursuing God. So this is the next step on how to increase your chance of receiving a blessing. Love God more than God's things. After all David, the one after God's heart, wrote:

The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it; -Psalm 24:1

This is a true or false statement. Which do you believe? This is a very reasonable statement if you believe that God created the heavens and the earth. And it appears that God wants us to fall in love with him. I do believe that God would like to bless us and give us nice things, but I am certain that he does not want us to love his things more than him. I think most of us a parents can related to this; we want to give our kids or our grand kids nice things, but not to the point where it jeopardizes our relationship.

As I walk my dog in the evenings, my neighbor a few houses down, has a big flat screen TV by his front window. It's so big that I can comfortably watch what teams are playing from the side walk. No matter what time in the evening or how late at night, it's always tuned into either ESPN or the Yankee's channel. So is this is what will happen if you God blesses you? You are going to spend your entire time with some object incapable of love? Wives you better think twice before buying your husband that new set of golf clubs he's been longing for. Hopefully your spouse married you because she/he loved you and not your things. I know you probably had a kick'in 8-Track or vinyl LP record collection when you first met, but hopefully your spouse didn't marry you for your music collection, your car, or your bank account.

We are both physical and spiritual beings. Make no mistake about it, this is a spiritual (not a physical) junction point where people get off and get onto the wrong path. From my eye-witness accounts, people that get on this wrong path tend to take their entire family down too -it's generally marked by wrecked relationships. Often many "religious" people get derailed here by buying into a health and wealth type of gospel that emphasizes health and prosperity -if you don't have it, you obviously are doing something wrong; the emphasis is loving the blessing and not the blesser.

Again I want to state that there is nothing wrong with having health, wealth, and success. If we go with the Wall Street definition of success, which is basically the accumulation of wealth in a very short amount of time (the shorter amount of time, the more "successful" you are), then the most successful American business woman has been using her influence to introduce some very interesting writers. Many of whom have become very prosperous. Again, nothing wrong with that. But they too preach a health and wealth gospel. However it is disguise and most people don't realize it. I'm not saying the Wall Street definition of success is a good one, because many lives get ruined by "success". But needless to say, many of these new writers have done very well. And I understand why.

Our economy is market driven (more specifically spending driven), the impetus in getting spending going is to introduce something new. Now they too have written on the same subject I am now writing on. However their theme isn't how to get a blessing; their theme is how to get stuff.

Allow me to compare and contrast their "new" philosophy which is actually very old with the #1 best selling book in the written history of mankind. Yes, these writers may have made the New York's #1 best sellers list for a few weeks, but when compared to the #1 best selling book of all times their philosophy is bankrupt. Next week let's just look at one fundamental difference takes people off course.
