Alternate Truth
By L. S. Su
"Alternate Facts" is
a new phrase used by the new administration that took the highest
office in the United States of America less than two months
ago. In the early 21st century, the term “alternative
facts” entered the political lexicon without much fan
fare or outrage. It remains to be seen how far this philosophical
term will spread into the most powerful social, economic and
military machine in the world. Facts and Truth are related correct?
You should realize the phrase is being used in a way to dismiss
what one party believes is true, get off the subject, and talk
about something else. It's as to say that whatever you think
is true really doesn't matter me, let me introduce an alternate
truth. But do facts and truth even work this way? Is truth relative
where it can be true for you but not true for me? Is there such
thing as an alternate fact or truth?

This is a common slide that I use
in class for my high school students. It depicts blindfolded
people using their gift of touch in trying to understand what
is an elephant. So one person thinks it's true that an elephant
is like a snake; another might think it's like a tree or a wall.
Are they all correct? Does each have their own version of truth?
Can multiple versions of what is true exist? The short answer
is no. Truth doesn't work this way. I'll elaborate soon.
Combine this philosophical concept
"alternate truth" with our concept of "peace"
and this spells trouble for the American people and people in
other nations that may disagree with the new administration's
actions. If the new administration is going to simply dismiss
facts and introduce "alternate facts" (i.e. an alternate
truth), then you will not even be able to engage in a meaningful
and logical conversation. I see truth as the last gate keeper
and now truth (who is impartial to all) is in the process of
being "Fired" and an alternate truth (i.e. a lie)
is trying to usurp this position. You should realize that our
definition of peace is very different for us than for most other
people.
Peace for Americans is more than
just the cessation of hostilities. Peace for Americans is when
there is a cease fire AND you do things the way we want you
to do them (i.e. in a way to benefit us). We need both conditions
in place; When we get both then American is at "peace".
But has it ever occurred to us that while we are at "peace"
with another group or nation, they might not be at peace with
us? We made this mistake after World War I. The Western powers
implemented policies that put us at "peace" with Germany.
But the problem back then and still today is that we continue
to pursue a one-sided version of peace.
I happen to have a world view that
believes that what is true does matter. In fact what is true
is a really important and a big deal. It was so important that
truth actually incarnated 2000+ years ago and became fully man
and fully God. He then revealed to us that he is "the way,
the truth and the life." -John
14:6. The statement is very significant because Jesus said
he can show or point us to the truth, which is about all human
teachers can do; he said he is the truth. Truth took human form
for some reason. This certainly wasn't done for fun; It was
done for a singular purpose. Jesus Christ actually provides
the answer himself on why he came. The answer was revealed when
Pontius Pilate was cross examining Jesus at his trial.
“You are a king, then!”
said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say
that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came
into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the
side of truth listens to me.” -John
18:37
That's a pretty simple answer.
Jesus, whom Christians believe is God, incarnated (became a
man) in order "to testify to the truth". But I know
the ramifications escape most people. So God took human form
so that he could die a gruesome death in order to "testify
to the truth"? So the next question inquisitive minds should
ask is "Why was it so important for God to testify to the
truth?". It had to be extremely important before anyone
willingly sacrifices their only son for the cause. I sometimes
marvel on how easy God's made it for those who seek the answer.
It's provided for us in the most scrutinized, translated, and
published piece of literature in human history. The answer on
why Jesus came to testify to the truth is provided 10 chapters
before the trial.
"Then you will know the
truth, and the truth will set you free.” -John
8:32
"Set me free from what?"
should be the next logical question. I believe only a small
minority know the answer to this question. It is my hope that
if you don't know the answer, you'd at least explore the question;
because what you believe here will have very long term consequences
for you. And when I say long term, I mean long long term. There
is only one truth here. There is no alternate truth. And certainly
no alternate facts. If you don't know the answer to the above
question and want to know, I suggest you first read the book
of John and then Genesis.
I can see how and why the term
"alternate facts" was not immediately rejected as
being nonsense. I think it's because if you ask people if truth
is absolute or if truth is relative, I think most people would
answer "relative" (e.g. it might be true for you,
but it's not true for me). Truth cannot be relative. In fact
truth has very exclusive properties in itself. The argument
to defeat why truth cannot e relative is a pretty simple one.
If you encounter a person that
believes truth is relative and not absolute, first ask them
"Is truth is relative or absolute?". If they say,
"Truth is relative," then ask them if they are sure
about their answer. If they say, "Yes", then ask them
of they are "absolutely sure?" You might have to ask
them a few times "absolutely sure?" before they catch
on that they cannot make an absolute statement if everything
is relative.
One neat property about truth,
is that truth does not change. What is true does not depend
on what you or I may or may not believe. It doesn't depend on
how we might feel about it. What is true is not subject to what
the majority of people's opinion. Truth does not even require
our existence. In the picture above, all the blindfolded people
have an incorrect perception of what a elephant is truly like.
The person that has the true and correct understanding what
a elephant is like is not depicted in the picture. Only one
person has the true understanding of what I'm going to call
ultimate reality. I'd like to mention again that what is true
does NOT change. If it could, then it would present all sorts
of problems for us. We've been given the gift and ability to
derive many truths. But those derivations must start from presuppositions
(axioms) on what we accept as true. Many philosophical truths
need to be revealed to us because it would be impossible to
find or derive them on our own. Just like one of those blind
folded characters; we need help. Maybe that is why God told
us this and continues to reach out to us:
“I the Lord do not change.
So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. Ever
since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from
my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will
return to you,” says the Lord Almighty. -Malachi
