Marriage in the 21st Century (Point of Contention 2)
By L S Su
In the 21st century, man is making a concerted effort to expand the definition of marriage. This is definitely a momentous occasion; Because when you look through mankind's history, there has never been of this magnitude the acceptance of same sex couples into the institution of holy matrimony (aka marriage). I think it's a very momentous occasion because of two reasons.
For me, marks that mankind has reached a pretty high level of secularism. I'm defining secularism is when religious ideas, institutions, and interpretations have lost their social significance. The second reason is that it marks that we've reached a point of critical mass in people where God's words have either vacated or was never present in man's heart. My worldview tells me the former is unhealthy, but the later is deadly. I'll explain soon.
Am I worried? No. My worldview also tells me that God is all powerful, all knowing, and in full control of the situation. Mankind is unable to thwart God's master plan. I'm also not surprised. Man has been questioning and challenging God's word for a long long time. As mentioned before, all of our problems in this life trace back to this simple little question, "Did God really say?" -Genesis 3:1
Why is same sex marriage an issue in the first place? Why so much controversy? The point of contention on this particular issue is on morality. All difficult questions fall into 4 buckets: origin, meaning, morality, and destiny. So here's the point of contention when it comes to same sex marriage. Just like how some people believe that cheating on your spouse is immoral, some people also believe a homosexual life style is also immoral.
If you take God out of the picture, what is moral or immoral then becomes something man becomes the ultimate decision maker on. At least I don't see us consulting animals, reptiles, insects, and inanimate objects on controversial issues. So if you think that man is the final decision maker on what is moral and what is immoral, you'll tend allow the laws that are passed in society be your guideline for morality; If it's legal, it's right and therefore moral and if it's illegal, it's wrong and therefore immoral. This can be problematic; I'll show you why soon.
I think I see the tension in the line here. We live in a pluralistic society and we need to get along. And the best way to "get along" is by the rule of law. The laws a society passes reflect the morals the people of that society have. Got that? Laws reflect morals. So for instance if the great majority of the people believe it is immoral for an adult to engage in sexual activity with a child, we as a society will pass laws and penalties that discourage this type of activity -despite that these law discriminates against those adults who prefer to engage in sexual relations with children.
Some laws that we passed as a society have been overruled by appointed judges; one reason is because they believed that law violated the constitutional rights of other individuals. It's not what happened with proposition 8 in California; that had more to do with not following procedure. So in our country, the majority does NOT necessarily rule. If it is interpreted by certain key people as violating the U.S. Constitution (which is just a series of laws) then it really doesn't matter how the majority feel or voted on the issue. So in our country the U.S. Constitution are a set of laws that supercedes other laws. So here's the big question, is there a set of laws that supercede a country's highest law?
In the 20th century, one country adopted laws that made it legal to kill Jews and take their assets. After World War II ended the allies start putting these Nazi officials on trial. A defense team was formed to design the best defense for their involvement in the war and the mass executions.
One of the strategies was to argue their country's constitution (their highest law) permitted them to kill Jews; Another argued that they were simply following orders and that these men did nothing illegal and therefore nothing wrong according to German law. Then the natural strategy was to divert the issue to whether it was conceited to believe that American, British, or Russian law supercedes German law. But a person on the defense team asked, "Isn't there a law that supercedes all human laws?" If you cannot accept that there must be a law that supercedes all human laws, then it becomes difficult to argue that the Nazi's actions were immoral.
With God out of the picture, man becomes the ultimate decision maker on what is moral and what is immoral. Without God, what are you going to base your morals on? Your feelings? Feelings can change. The end results? The time period you pick might not be long enough. Perhaps if you observe that society is harmed then the action was immoral? Or if society thrives then the action was moral?
It should be noted that whenever Jesus was confronted the most difficult questions by quoted Scripture. He kept using this catch phrase, "It is written...." and he would then go on to quote God's word. A Christian is a person that confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord and believes that God raised Him from the dead. So for Christians, God's word becomes the highest law.
So it is NOT a lie when the Scriptures tells us that man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord (Deut 8:3, Matt. 4:4, Luke 4:4). Both bread and God's word are necessary ingredients for life. Without both, you will surely die.
Next time, I'd like to address a couple of difficult question that was posed to me by one of my students. "Are homosexual acts sinful?" and "Are homosexuals going to hell?"
