God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Make America Great Again
By L. S. Su

"Make America Great Again" was the slogan used by one of our parties during the 2016 Presidential contest that helped propel their candidate into office. In the twenty first century, the United States remained a two party system. These two parties (groups) control almost all elected public office positions throughout he country. Both of these groups will say they welcome other parties to participate, but in reality these two parties don't invite other people who are not affiliated with them to the party (e.g. debates, access to funding, media attention).

As I turn the words over in my head, "Make America Great Again" a bunch of questions come to mind. Questions like:

This slogan implies that at one time we were Great, but no longer. When was the United States great?
What does the word, "Great" mean? Because what is great for you might not be great for me.
How is America to become "Great" again?

I think I see a pattern the American people have developed in business and politics. When we don't know how to do something, we hire someone, Then if they don't perform to some subjective level of satisfaction, we fire them. What is kind of ironic is the President elect is very familiar with the words, "You're Fired!". I think we implement this strategy so that we can always point the finger at someone else and say it's this person's or group's fault; because it's obviously not my fault that America isn't great. Also, I have a hunch that if you have expectations that a single person or a single administration is going to make America great, I think you will be thoroughly disappointed in a short time.

As I turn the words over in my head again, "Make America Great Again", maybe the first step is to figure out what is the source of greatness and the second step is to figure out what doesn't make us "Great" and stop doing what doesn't make us great. Pretty simple recommendation from a toy salesman.

For a great nation, what is the ultimate source of greatness? Is it their weapons of war and the ability to destroy life quickly that makes a nation great? Does greatness ultimate come from uncorrupt leadership? Or perhaps the source of greatness comes from the people of that nation? I happen to take the view that the source of all greatness comes from God. In America's history, and not that long ago, we had a great leader for the American people and he too believed that the source of greatness comes from God. Read the first sentence of Lincoln's proclamation that he made Thanksgiving a national holiday.

"The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God." -President Abraham Lincoln

Fortunately for us, we have in our history books a well documented case where there once was a great nation. This nation had great leadership, its people flourished, their economy flourished, and they had peace inside their own country as well on all its borders. They actually exported more than they imported too. Then the people inside this great nation started adopting practices that God found "detestable" and God withdrew his presence and this nation ceased being great.

"So what were the two "detestable" practices the citizens of this great nation started to do?

“‘And you took your sons and daughters whom you bore to me and sacrificed them as food to the idols. Was your prostitution not enough? You slaughtered my children and sacrificed them to the idols. In all your detestable practices and your prostitution you did not remember the days of your youth,'" -Ezekiel 16: 20 -22

Apparently, God finds it extremely undesirable for the people of a nation to slaughter their own children to idols. These idols had fancy names like "Molek" and "Adrammelek". In America today, we continue this detestable practice in larger numbers and at a faster rate than this great nation in the past. So basically we have scaled up this practice and changed the idols names to something easier to pronounce "Freedom Of" and "My Comfort".

The second practice this once great nation started doing was this:

"You not only followed their ways and copied their detestable practices, but in all your ways you soon became more depraved than they. As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, your sister Sodom and her daughters never did what you and your daughters have done." -Ezekiel 16: 47 - 48

So what was this second detestable practice this nation started doing? God tells us in the very next verse.

Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. -Ezekiel 16: 49

That it? Not helping the poor and needy? Wow, apparently in God economy and value system, he puts not helping the "poor and needy" on par with murdering your own children. We Americans haven't become arrogant, overfed, and unconcerned have we?

I am starting to become fearful for American and for people in foreign countries. It seems that we have already adopted the two detestable practices this once great nation had adopted. I know from being immersed in the American culture that two of the top values most Americans seem to have developed is a desire for 1) personal comfort and 2) security. These two values (aka idols) have become so strong that we've already demonstrated that we're willing to sacrifice much (our own and other people's basic human rights) in order to retain these two values.

Check out this stat. "An estimated 11 million Syrians have fled their homes since the outbreak of the civil war in March 2011. Now, in the sixth year of war, 13.5 million are in need of humanitarian assistance within the country. Among those escaping the conflict, the majority have sought refuge in neighboring countries or within Syria itself. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 4.8 million have fled to Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Iraq, and 6.6 million are internally displaced within Syria. Meanwhile about one million have requested asylum to Europe. Germany, with more than 300,000 cumulated applications, and Sweden with 100,000, are EU’s top receiving countries."

If generosity is measured by the number of "poor and needy" we assist and if you divide by the population of that country, you'll see that America has been one of the least generous countries. As of a few months ago, our nation has only taken in 10,000 men, women, and children who simply desire to live. Why so few America? Our we not the greatest nation in the world? I forgot, the slogan implies that we are no longer great.

Our desire for personal comfort and our security is starting to "trump" all other values. If you have Irish, English, French, German, Spanish, European, or Asian ancestry in your blood (or basically if you are not a native American and can claim affiliation with an Indian tribe), then consider yourself fortunate. Because the American people a few generations were great and they made our nation great. They were not arrogant, overfed or unconcerned; and they did help the poor and needy in huge boat load quantities. Had they adopted the two idols we have today, your ancestors would never have arrived to this land; and you probably wouldn't be an American today.

If God is truly the source of greatness, I just don't see that we can make America Great Again, while we continue to engage in these two detestable practices. We should cut these two idols out of our diet and we should hold onto this promise God has given us:

"if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." -2 Chronicles 7: 14
