God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
The Misleading Power of Observation (part 2 of 2)
By Lu Su

If you didn't catch last week's article, you might want to read it before catching this week's explanation (or this week's article will even be more nonsensical than usual).

So this old man who has conducted extensive research on a particular topic is now being directly confronted by this stranger who says he is flat out wrong. This same train observation problem actually dovetails into our personal journey too; but many people are totally unaware. So if not careful, can be mislead in arriving to what is True. Perhaps the bigger question is If the truth of the proper ratio of passenger trains to freight trains cannot be determined with a very careful, eye witnessed, and life long study, what chance do we have of observing and determining what is true for things we cannot personally observe and measure? Is the answer to throw your hands and conclude that you cannot believe in anything?

I Want to Believe

Many X-File fans will instantly recognized the poster that was like the sole piece of decor in Mulders dim, dark, and lonely basement office. So let's return to the local pub where the old man's belief of what is true is being confronted. He wants to believe.

"How is it possible that I can be so far off in my conclusions?" demanded the old man. "I'm sure the ratio of passenger trains to freight trains is 12:1. Furthermore, I've done such a careful and long study and I've taken 312,000 samples -so don't tell me I'm wrong! There is NO POSSIBLE WAY that the ratio of passenger trains to freight trains can be 1:1."
"Look," said the train controller now knowing he has obviously hit a very sensitive spot ,"you can believe whatever you want. I just came over to basically thank you for the beer." and started to leave.
"Please," said the old man while grabbing onto the arm of this stranger "help me with my disbelief." (All of us would be even more desperate than this old man if we could just see how some Truth matters dovetails into our lives and will affect us eternally).
"Okay, I'm the train controller and I know for a fact that in the last 70 years, the ratio of passenger trains to freight trains that runs down the track is exactly equal."
"So if what you are telling me is true, how is possible that what I have observed to be true could be so far off?"
"How did you go about studying this?" asked the controller.
The old man explained his sampling process in detail.
The controller instantly see's the error the old many had made. "Do you realize that passenger trains are faster than freight trains?" asked the controller.
Silence for a few seconds. ".......What does that have to do with anything?" asked the old man. (What does Jesus Christ have to do with anything?)
"Because passenger trains are faster than freight trains, we need to put passenger trains on the track before the freight train." replied the controller. "In the town before yours we actually start both trains the same time with the freight train right behind the passenger train. But by the time it gets to the next town (this town) the freight train which runs slower will be about 5 minutes behind the passenger train."
"Oh no, " said the old man as he started to see where he went wrong.
"So the way you have conducted your study, in a given hour there was only a 5 minute window of opportunity for you to observe a freight train"

Did the old many make an observation error? No. The observation was fine. The problem was in his sampling. As I speak to more people, I see this same sampling error being made that often leads them to the incorrect conclusion. Again, there is nothing wrong with their observation -just bad sampling. One person is an eye witnesses to so much evil and heartache and concludes that a loving God would never permit so much evil -so they conclude that God cannot exists. Another person's earthly father was so physically abusive that one encounter left him with a broken leg and crushed check bone; his mom who attempted to come to his aid was in put in a 10 day coma. Another father walked away from his wife and four young kids; so this is their eye witness account and has results in some of them concluding that their heavenly father, if they even have one, must hate me too.

But the most devastating sampling error I see in people, often results when individuals while growing up sample a very negative, harmful, and sometimes unlawful experience from those who are suppose to serve as role models or representative of a particular religion or faith. It's devastating, because these persons tend to totally shut down and have already concluded that they want no part in matters of religion, faith or God. It's really a tragedy when people are mislead to the wrong conclusion by their own power of observation.
