Secret Agents at Work

About two weeks ago, I finally
gave in and tried Uber for the first time from my home to the
airport. The internet has given birth to new inventions, including
this ride hailing software application. I appear to have a love/hate
relationship with a lot of new internet developments because
of how it's caused so many of my friends to lose their original
vocation (e.g. programmer, hedge fund manager, musician, bank
loan officer, photographer) that they were able to make a decent
living before the internet. But now most of them have found
work in another field for less money or remain unemployed. With
the fare to the airport at about 1/2 of what the car service
I had been using for two decades, I believe Uber is the death
knell for many taxi and limo drivers.
My Uber driver, let's call him
Tony, was kind and courteous -I guess a good attribute for those
in the service business. I noticed that he had rosary beads
draped over his rear view mirror, a picture of Mary, and a mini
statue glued to the top of his dashboard. Notice I said, "mini
statue" in case some of you were somehow thinking "
life-size statue" and attempting to make this story more
surreal and bizarre.
Tony seemed to be a loving father.
He told me that he has a CDL license and use to drive tractor
trailers for a living across the country for a living; But that
job would cause him to leave his family for several days or
even weeks at a time. Tony told me that he didn't like leaving
his wife and young daughter for multiple days at a time. So
apparently as a Uber driver and picking up some odd jobs, he
doesn't make as much money as driving a commercial tractor trailer,
but it allows him to sleep and be with his kin every night.
"Are you Catholic?",
I asked.
"Yes.", Tony replied.
"My mother brought me to church when I was a child and
I have never stopped going."
We exchanged what church both of
us were both attending. Somehow the conversation turn to the
afterlife. Probably when I asked him, "What do you believe
happens when we die?" a common question I'll ask some close
friends and apparently new acquaintances too.
Tony replied, "I believe some
of us will turn into star or a moon or an angel or something
else."
I admit, I was a bit surprised
by Tony's reply.
"Did someone in your church
teach you this that after we die we can become a star, a moon,
or an angel?" I inquired. "
To my relief the reply was something
like, "No it's something I recently started thinking on
my own."
"What do you believe happens
to people when they die?" Tony inquired.
I told Tony that the answer to
that question is in the Bible. I also explained that a deep
question like this needs to be revealed by someone who knows
and it's NOT something we can sit there and think up with the
answer. I remember telling Tony that for a Christian the Bible
serves as the ultimate source of truth on matters like this,
because we consider the Bible God's word.
"I'm sorry Tony, the Bible
doesn't support that we can turn into a star, moon, or an angel
after we die," I replied.
What happens when we die is actually
quite straightforward. I quoted him the passage in Hebrews.
" Just as people are destined to die once, and after that
to face judgment,"
"Wow you seem to know a lot,
" Tony remarked.
"It's just from the Bible,"
I replied. I find it kind of odd that the Catholic church doesn't
seem to encourage their attendees to read the Bible on their
own. Or at least I know many Catholics that I know are not in
the habit of reading their Bible or even bring one with them
when they attend mass.
Then Tony shared with me a real
bizarre or perhaps a supernatural incident that occurred to
him the day before.
"I was driving by myself alone
in the car when I came to a red light. I was stopped there with
no cars behind me. There were no cars anywhere and I was the
only car at the traffic light. Then suddenly as I was just sitting
there in the car, I became afraid. I don't know why. Then I
became very scared and when the light turned green, I did not
step on the gas to go. He says I've been driving almost all
my life and this was the very first time that when the light
turned green, I didn't instantly step on the gas to go. If there
was a car behind me, I would have probably stepped on the gas
petal; but there wasn't so I just sat there for a few seconds.
And then suddenly a car probably going over 80 maybe 100 mph
went flying through the intersection. He ran his light man!
Man, I tell you, if I drove the way I normally do (light turns
green, you go) I think I would be dead now."
"What do you think happened?
Maybe you have a guardian angel?", I inquired.
"Maybe he replied. What ever
happened, I'm glad that it happened. Something like this has
never happened to me before. Who gets scared just sitting at
a light? It's normal and automatic for me to step on the gas
pedal when the light turns green. This is the first time in
my life that I did not go when the light turned green."
I'm not sure exactly what happened,
but I do believe the events Tony relayed to me really happened.
. From the way he told the story, I know he was not lying and
he himself didn't have any explanation on what happened; but
he kept telling me he's very glad that it did happen. And kept
saying, "Who becomes suddenly afraid when sitting in their
own car?" Tony experienced this overwhelming sensation
of fear, which he's never experienced before came over him while
just sitting there.
I believe an agent of God saved
Tony that day. I believe an agent somehow got involved that
day and resulted in saving Tony's life. I believe their are
both good and evil agents present on this Earth influencing
lives and altering events. I also think there is a good chance
you and I have encountered these agents too. I'm not talking
about human agents like Men In Black, but angelic and demonic
ones.
The Bible supports their existence.
Here is a passage from the Bible where one of these agents speaks
to Daniel. The same Daniel from Daniel and the Lion's Den story.
Like Tony, Daniel encounters one of these agents. And Tony had
a similar experience of both fear and bewilderment. The following
conversation is recorded in the Bible and foreshadowed the fall
of Persia empire to the Grecian one. So I know these agents
are able to affect world events and the rise and fall of countries.
As I write this, I just learned that the UK has decided to exit
the European Union and I can't help but wonder if agents were
involved. Shortly before the vote there was a murder of a politician
that was pro-union. And that guy with the orange hair who is
rising to power, does seem to have a bit of a crazed look in
his eye and speech.
In the third year of Cyrus king
of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel (who was called
Belteshazzar). Its message was true and it concerned a great
war. The understanding of the message came to him in a vision.
At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks.
I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and
I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.
On the twenty-fourth day of the first month,
as I was standing on the bank of the great river, the Tigris,
I looked up and there before me was a man dressed in linen,
with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. His
body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like
flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished
bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude.
I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision;
those who were with me did not see it, but such terror overwhelmed
them that they fled and hid themselves. So I was left alone,
gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left, my face
turned deathly pale and I was helpless. Then I heard him speaking,
and as I listened to him, I fell into a deep sleep, my face
to the ground.
A hand touched me and set me trembling on my
hands and knees. He said, “Daniel, you who are highly
esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak
to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you.”
And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling.
Then he continued, “Do not be afraid,
Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain
understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your
words were heard, and I have come in response to them. But
the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days.
Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because
I was detained there with the king of Persia. Now I have come
to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future,
for the vision concerns a time yet to come.”
While he was saying this to me, I bowed with
my face toward the ground and was speechless. Then one who
looked like a man touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and
began to speak. I said to the one standing before me, “I
am overcome with anguish because of the vision, my lord, and
I feel very weak. How can I, your servant, talk with you,
my lord? My strength is gone and I can hardly breathe.”
Again the one who looked like a man touched
me and gave me strength. “Do not be afraid, you who
are highly esteemed,” he said. “Peace! Be strong
now; be strong.”
When he spoke to me, I was strengthened and
said, “Speak, my lord, since you have given me strength.”
So he said, “Do you know why I have come
to you? Soon I will return to fight against the prince of
Persia, and when I go, the prince of Greece will come; but
first I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth.
