God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
The Gospel

I found this commercial very entertaining.
I often feel that we Christians are like the lead caveman in the commercial. We too have something really good to share, but it's often not well received (for many good and bad reasons). What Christians have to share is even better than the wheel. What we have to share can transform lives. And if what we have to share is accepted, it can improve the quality of life now and forever -talk about long term benefits. What we have to share with others is called the Gospel.
A Gospel (from Old English, gōd spell "good news") is a writing that describes the life of Jesus. So Gospel means "Good News". The good news is simply this:
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. -John 3:16
This is really good news and a great offer. It's a better offer than any person running for public office has made me. All that is needed is for you to accept the offer. Notice I didn't say "free offer". This offer came with a huge price. And this offer could only be made through ONE person. All that is left to do is to accept this offer.
Could it be that easy? What about all the things you need to do? Don't you have to carry a heavy stone or live a more virtuous life the average Joe in order to obtain eternal life? The Gospel message does NOT teach that you have to do certain things in order to inherit eternal life. Remember the thief on the cross next to Jesus? If memory serves me correctly, he didn't have too much time or opportunity to tackle a "to do" list. Christ's offer is really counter intuitive to all other religions.
I often feel that we Christians are like the lead caveman in the commercial. We have something really good to share, but our marketing of the Gospel (the wheel) and out invitation (the bottle opener) really sucks (in caveman terms).
One of the most peaceful men that lived on earth made this oberservation and said,
"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." - Mohandas Gandhi
Many Christians, or I should say many people that claim to be Christians, are very quick to find sin in other people's lives. "That's sinful. You are going to hell." That certainly isn't a message of good news. Remember, we have been authorized to spread Good News.
Christians have a distinctive mark that makes us different. The mark of a Christian (a follower of Jesus Christ) is the empowering presence of God in our lives. This can manifests itself in many ways, but the most common manifestation of Christ in our lives is love. But we often do a very poor job in demonstrating love. It certainly doesn't help our marketing of the Gospel when the Christian divorce rate is on par with the non-Christians.
Christians today as well as back in the early church often don't do love well. We are suppose to hate the sin, but love the sinner; however, many just seem to hate the whole package. What I think is the most poetic descriptions of love is, was written by the Apostle Paul to Christians living in the city called Corinth. I'm sure you have heard its reading, if you have attended a wedding. It starts with "If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only...." And ends with "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." -1 Corinthians 13
What most people do not realize is that Paul wrote this to actually rebuke Christians for getting love wrong. When people look at our lives, do people say, "I want what he or she's got?" Or are they turned off. One of the best way to share the Gospel (the good news) is to share it by demonstrating the love of Jesus Christ in your life. Someone took the bullet for you; so start showing more appreciation. It's the best marketing strategies that we Christians can employed. A great man said this,
"Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words." -Saint Francis Assisi.
