God
and the Art of Toy and Diecast Car Marketing
A Distinctive Mark
By Lu Su
Living in
New Jersey has allowed me to experience a great diversity of people.
I’m sure you’ve heard the term that New York City
is a big melting pot? Well that melting pot apparently got too
full and spilled into the surrounding areas. To my pleasure, as
I bring my kids to parks, zoos, and even the food court, English
just seems to be one of many languages being spoken in Northern
NJ. On Monday nights I play competitive tennis with a group of
men of which about one quarter of the group speaks Romanian. Perhaps
‘speak’ is not the best word here (probably ‘curse’
in Romanian would be more correct)
When I was
young, I spent a few years growing up in Logan, Utah. At that
particular time period (long long ago, in a land far far away)
there was nowhere the diversity of culture that is seen there
now. At that time I was the only Asian kid in the entire elementary
school system. To many of my fellow 3rd graders, I was their very
first China man they ever laid eyes on. I came with the whole
package: black hair, slanty eyes, and apparently a natural born
Kung Fu talent (just coursing through my veins). I should qualify
that statement. For many of the kids, I was the first Asian person
they saw live. Bruce Lee, the black belt artist, was big back
then and most of the kids either had seen one of his movies or
a poster of him. I still remember boys asking me whether I could
karate chop this desk in half (Hi-yah!).
Working in
New Jersey has allowed me the great fortune of meeting a very
diverse group of buyers. The Amish are easy to identify when they
come to visit our showroom. The white head covering worn by the
women, the pins in their dress (instead of stitches), men in predominantly
black colored cloths and of course the hired driver (they are
not allowed to own cars or operate them) who usually plops himself
down on the couch in our foyer, are obvious signs to me that that
these people are Amish and most likely have come from the Lancaster,
PA area.
With great
fortune, the Tri State area (NY, NJ & CT) has a high concentration
of Jews. My old roommate told me that if you ever wanted to find
good schools and good hospital, go live where there are many Jews.
And even among this group, there is diversity within. Some speak
Hebrew and some Yiddish. Some wear their hair and even facial
a particular way. Some wear a covering for their head. All these
distinctive marks, clue me in onto what world view they subscribe
to. And many of the clues even tell me what particular sect of
Judaism they follow.
With great
fortune, the Tri State area also boasts a high concentration of
Muslims. All the Muslims that I have met are good and loving people.
On a few occasions, while working with particular buyers, he will
glance down at their watch and then ask me if I mind on taking
a short break. The question is then usually followed by an inquiry
on an available room that he can go pray in. Usually the conference
room is free and I always offer the throw pillows on the couch
to them. The need to pray at a certain time, in a certain way,
and in a certain direction makes it obvious that this man is following
his Muslim world view traditions.
I’ve
mentioned only a few, but it seems like every religious group
have distinctive marks that identify them. So then, what is the
distinctive mark of a Christian? This is a very reasonable question
to ask right? I would think whether you are a Christian or not,
the answer would be something interesting to know.
This past
week, I received multiple identical emails from different people
throughout the country. All the emails contained the same content
and had the same subject line: WHO IS OBAMA????????. It must have
made an impression on them, because they had forwarded on to me.
From what
I see, the article’s overall purpose is to question Obama’s
claim that he is a Christian. The article seems to argue that
Obama is not what he claims, belongs to another radical world
view, and is not worthy of being a leader. Barack Obama, the Senator
from IL & Presidential hopeful, claims that he is a Christian
and that he has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Hummm…..
Didn’t
Michael Vic, right around the time he was to be sentenced claim
a similar thing? Is Obama using a similar ploy to increase his
chances of getting something he wants? So what is the distinctive
mark of a Christian? (Inquiring minds want to know….)
Is it the
type of clothes we wear? No.
Is it the way we wear our hair? No.
Is it some secret words that we use? No.
Is it some sort of secret hand shake or gestures that we make?
No.
Is it the types of food we eat or don’t eat? No.
Is it the type of political party we are affiliated with? No.
Is it some particular holiday that we celebrate in a certain way?
No.
Is it something that is passed down genetically (i.e. your mom
was this and so now you are too)? No.
Is it determined by what country you were born in? No.
Is it determined by what type of schooling you had received? No.
Is it determined by class, family or clan that your ancestors
belong to? No.
Well, then
what is the distinctive mark of a Christian? Ready for the answer?
The empowering
presence of the Holy Spirit.
What the heck
is that? And what the heck does that look like? The Holy Spirit
is part of the triune God that Christians believe in. Note that
this revelation about God (that he is made of three parts) was
not revealed until way after Moses’ time. So the statement
"Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and ….”,
must have been truly puzzling to those who take the world view
that there is only one God. From my understanding words like “us”
and “our” are always used to denote more than one.
Since spirits
generally don’t have a look or a physical form (unless you
are Casper or Jack Daniels), so we need to look at the effects
of the Spirit. The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Galatians
describes the outworking of what the Holy Spirit looks like. “But
the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness”
So is Obama a Christian? Now with the knowledge of what to look
for (the distinctive mark), you now have a much better chance
of answering this questions. How do you go hunting if you don’t
know what you’re looking for? Does Obama exhibit these qualities
(i.e. love, joy, peace, patience….) with his family, co-workers,
his pets, the people under him, and the people over him?
When determining
if a claim a person makes is true or not, look for where his feet
take him. Rhetoric is easy, but rarely do actions betray intentions.
An alcoholic may claim that he is no longer addicted, but if his
feet keep taking him to the liquor store then something is wrong.
A person may claim that he hates America, but if his feet do not
take him out of this countr, I would find his statement suspect;
the last time I checked, our country doesn’t force any citizen
to stay.
On the same
token, look where Obama’s feet take him. If his world view
claim is designed for a political edge, then look to see how long
his feet have been taking him to church. Or does he even attend
church? Love is going to get manifested in helping those who cannot
help themselves, has Obama’s feet taken him to places or
people that can help? Obama recently wrote a book that made the
New York Times best seller list “The Audacity of Hope”.
Where did his feet take him to get this inspiration? Where did
he get such an audacious title anyways?
