God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
A Rough Start, but a Great Finish
By Lu Su
I don't know how many Jay Leno fans are out there. Usually on Monday nights, Jay does this routine called Headlines on the Tonight Show. From my point of view, it's NBC's only entertaining thing to watch AND it probably doesn't cost the network much money to produce. Basically readers throughout the country will cut out funny newspaper clips or headlines that they find, mail them to NBC, a staff assembles them, and Jay reads them. One headline that Jay read caught my attention, because I just found it hilarious. I don't remember the exact words, but it went something like this:
Single white 50 year male looking for fun, energetic, 45 year old or younger female. Must own a fishing boat. Write to mail box number XYZ123. Be sure to enclose a picture of boat.
I'm not sure if I should feel more sorry for this man or for the woman who dates this man. From my calculations, any woman that responded to this ad could only hope to place 3rd in this man's life. This man's first love is fishing. The woman and boat are only the means for this man to rendezvous with his first love. So if I were to list in order this man's loves, I would say: fish, boat, relationship. Once this man is in possession of a boat and if he is placed in the situation where he has to decide between a bucket of bait or the woman, I think this woman would then enter 4th place.
We laugh, but how many of us have friends that keep entering unhealthy/destructive relationships? We often want to grab our friend who still has the hook, line and sinker in his mouth and say to them, "What is the matter with you? Are you blind? The person you are dating is an addict and is with you because you can feed their addiction. In America, we have many additctions. How many of us have had a unhealthy relationship? I've been there, done that -definitely not fun.
We might chuckle over this man's personal ad and even feel extra sorry for the woman that actually answers the personal ad from a man addicted to fishing. But one thing is for certain, any relationship this man entered into, would be off to a really rough start. Speaking of rough starts, this reminds me of another relationship that was off to an even rougher start. The events of the story are by multiple Gospel writers. Here's one recorded by Matthew the tax collector Matthew 1:18-21.
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:"The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"—which means, "God with us."
More details are forthcoming about the above event when another Gospel writer Luke the physician. He writes in Luke 2:1-7
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
There is so much packed into these five paragraphs, there is ample of subject matter for anyone to write a doctorate thesis on any one of these verses. Notice that in just a few verses man theological terms appear -some of which we have already encountered on our journey (i.e marriage, Holy Spirit, righteousness, angel, salvation, blessing).
As a person often involved in the decision process on whether or not to purchase a particular toy, I'm often presented with conceptual sketches or drawings. I can read the specifications, see artist's rendition of the item, and sometimes even see a 3D picture of it on my computer screen. But until I actually see and experience the item (usually a prototype), it's very difficult for me to figure out whether or not this product is for me. A similar thing goes on with spiritual (non tangible) matters. Concepts like good, righteous, wisdom, omniscience, love, salvation, are all very nice concepts, but until I personally experience them, it's all pie in the sky. What we need is a prototype -someone to model it.
As Mary and Joseph make their way to Bethlehem, besides fulfilling numerous prophecies written hundreds of years before their time, something wondrous happens. If you can just scratch the surface in the understanding of this, you will realize how radical and totally mind blowing it is. All these "pie in the sky" concepts come together to a single focal point in the history of our universe -never to be repeated again. The unique event: The birth of Jesus Christ.
God incarnates; God becomes 100% human and 100% God at the same time. To many world views, this is an impossibility. This is point of contention that separates almost all world views from Christianity. To the follower of Christ (the Christian) it is a wondrous event -the biggest blessing we could ever receive. I assure you, if God in his infinite wisdom is able to get the most powerful man in the world (Caesar) to call a census, orchetrate the timing of Mary's birth (they only need to be in Bethlehem for a very brief time -just to fill out some papers), and gets these two peasants (both of them who come from the line of Jesse who is King David's father), and get them to make their way to Bethlehem, there certainly purpose in all of this. What was that purpose? Here is the beauty about it. You don't have to spend $14.99 for the book or $19.99 for the DVD version. The answer isn't a secret. The answer is free and available to all who want to know. It's plainly written in the writer's second paragraph given above.God entered this world so that "He will save his people from their sins". Notice it doesn't say "save ALL people", but it says "save HIS people". Hold that thought and back to Mary and Joseph.
The title is Rough Start, but a Great Finish. If there was a relationship that started out on the wrong foot, I think Mary and Joseph would be top candidates. You see in the culture of their time and still is in many parts of the world, marriages were arranged by two families. Back then and still today in many arranged marriages, the bride and groom have little or no say in the matter. Most scholars would estimate that Mary was 14 to 16 years of age and that Joseph would most likely have been 17 to 20 years old. Their engagement period worked a little different than what we are familiar with today. When the two families got together and pledged their daughter or son into marriage, from that that point onward, they were actually considered husband and wife -even before they had their marriage ceremony or the betrothed consummated their marriage. So Joseph cannot just call the engagement off. In their culture and at their particular stage in the relationship, he would have to ask for a divorce with a minimum of two witnesses present..
The rough start Mary and Joseph had with each other was that Mary was pregnant and both of them knew Joseph had nothing to do with it. The explanation "I am with child through the work of the Holy Spirit" is not that common of an explanation when a woman becomes pregnant. It's not an explanation that most men today or back then would accept. But Joseph doesn't know what we know. Mary would later become perhaps one of the most beloved woman in the history of mankind. How could anyone dislike Mary? That's like saying you don't like Mother Theresa. Joseph had no idea that Mary would one day be adored by millions. He didn't know that Mary was selected by God to be the surrogate mother of the Christ. Joseph certainly didn't know that Mary would be a plastic lawn ornament lit up during December on thousands of front yards. He certainly didn't know Mary was going to be adored to the point that she was turned into a little ceramic figurine and placed in thousands of nativity scenes in people's homes. More likely, Joseph was probably very upset and hurt. I would bet that Joseph felt betrayed and thought that Mary was unfaithful.
Now because Joseph was a "righteous man" he found himself in a tough predicament. Righteous men cannot just turn a blind eye to wrong doing. Even though Joseph loves Mary, he cannot just let this matter slide. Because he is righteous, he cannot have an intimate relationship with an unrighteous person. Can you related Joseph's situation to our situation? God is righteous and we are NOT. Just like Joseph's love for Mary, God loves us and wants to have a close relationship with us. But because God is righteous, he just cannot let the sin found inside of us just slide. How does God resolve this problem?
I heard a story that helps me understand how this tension can be resolved. One Tibetan ruler realized he had a situation in his palace. Someone was steeling items here and there. Now the law of the land was that whoever was caught steeling, they would lose their hand (chopped right off). He wanted this theivery to stop. So warned all in his household about the law, but in the weeks to come items continued to get pilfered thoughout his different rooms. One day the guards catch the thief red handed. The thief is haul to the the King. They unmask the villian. It turns out to be his own mother! Now a righteous ruler doesn't just say that laws do not pertain to him or his family; a righteous ruller does not consider himself above the law. So he cannot turn a blind eye and let the matter slide either -"Okay, just don't let it happen again". The way this Tibetan King resolved this problem is that he decides to take the penalty that should have been administered to his mother. He has his own hand cut off.
God resolves this problem by sending his son into the world. Christ pays our death sentence penalty that should have been ours. We only need to accept this free gift.
There it is, the Gospel message in three sentences. I encourage you to share this simple message with freinds and family. A Merry Christmas to you and your family.
-Lu
