God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
To Us a Son is Given
By L. S. Su

Just yesterday, the New Orleans City Council voted to remove three monuments honoring three famous Americans who received a lot of press coverage during the American Civil War. These three men are no longer considered politically correct or socially acceptable: General Robert W. Lee, General P.G.T. Beauregard, and Confederate president Jefferson Davis. Their statues were erected between 1884 and 1915. So it took about 100 years before these three sons of the Confederacy have become socially unacceptable.

I've noticed in recent years that the phrase "Merry Christmas" seems socially and politically incorrect thing to say now. Many emails and cards that I receive usually now say "Happy Holidays" or "Seasons Greetings". My hunch is that many people now believe the term "Merry Christmas" is for reserved for only people of a particular faith to distribute or receive. I disagree. Christmas is all about what God has done for us. It's free for all to receive. This free gift extends the boundaries of age, race, sex, color of skin, IQ, political party affiliation, or even what side of the Civil War your ancestors fought on.

Christmas is about this main character called Christ, the details of which can be found in the most translated, the most published, and the most distributed piece of literature on Earth. Christmas is all about a free gift from God. But like all gifts, it's totally up to you if you want to receive it or not. And unfortunately, the default option is "No, I choose NOT to receive this free gift."

Isaiah is one of the most famous prophets and prolific writers in the Bible. The book of Isaiah which is one of the books of the Bible was written sometime between 701 and 681 B.C. Or roughly over 2700 years ago. And he gives us an amazing fact and a poetic prophecy:

He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth,
and its people are like grasshoppers.
He stretches out the heavens like a canopy,
and spreads them out like a tent to live in. - Isaiah 40:22

Isaiah was around about 2000 years before Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue and He knew that the Earth was round? And the amazing prophecy that caught everyone off guard -particularly the religious folk:

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. -Isaiah 9:6

As I continue to study this amazing book, I've come to the conclusion that its existence came about supernaturally because of its accuracy. Keep in mind that in Isaiah's day it was very politically incorrect to believe that God could be a man -let alone a child. Back then it could actually get you killed.

It would not several hundred years later that God reveals that He is triune in nature. And that the son (Jesus Christ), one part of the Trinity, has always existed even before time and space existed. So the son has always existed, the son cannot be born. This is a paradox. But Isaiah gets this totally correct by breaking the single event into two parts: a child being born and the son given. No way a man could make something like this up -unless he got some supernatural help.

And who knew that there would be a several thousand year hiatus between the first event (1st two lines) and the second event (last 4 lines)? And what an awesome title.

Merry Christmas!
