Thankfulness is in the Air
By L. S. Su
My wife, friend, and I did some mental gymnastics and attempted to calculate how many turkeys were consumed yesterday. We agreed that there are about 300M people in the US, but that about the only number we agreed upon.
We didn’t agree on the average number of people at the gathering. We didn’t agree on what percentage of Americans just didn’t participate with the Thanksgiving holiday.
My buddy wanted to lop off 100M people from the population, who just didn’t eat turkey because they were vegetarians, Vegan, religions reasons, and who just don’t like turkey.
“I don’t know, I don’t think 1/3 of the population is vegetarians, Vegan, Hindu or falls in the group that despises eating turkey.” I replied.
Though we didn’t reach a consensus on a number of dead turkeys, I did get a bunch of texts and emails form people wishing me a Happy Thanksgiving. I actually sat and stared at the text on my phone yesterday and wondered what my friend meant by saying “Have a Happy Thanksgiving!” Was he hoping that my family gathering went well? Or perhaps that my time with relatives on Thanksgiving day would be good with few arguments? I actually pondered what he exactly meant by the Thanksgiving wish.
I believe millions of Americans on Thanksgiving Day just have this general association that this holiday should correlate with feeling of thankfulness; but ironically that thankfulness isn’t directed towards anyone in particular. But that’s wrong. Shouldn’t thanks be directed towards someone?
What I also find very interesting is that when Abraham Lincoln first started this holiday, it was for a dual purpose. It was for a time of repentance and thanksgiving.
I think it’s interesting how we Americans just ran with the later and forgot the former. I think it’s much easier to be thankful and not have your thanks be directed towards someone. But probably impossible to be repentant and not have repentance directed towards a person. Repentance is about telling someone, “I’m sorry. I’ll change my ways.”
If you take the time to read the speech Lincoln wrote to christen this holiday we Americans now spend getting fatter and preparing for Black Friday, you’ll see that the President was trying to tell us to pause and get back in alignment with God through repentance and thanksgiving. I think it’s been awhile since we’ve seen a Commander and Chief try a stunt like that.
I know we just have one Thanksgiving holiday per year. But in reality, we’d be a much stronger and loving nation if we could just pause and practice repentance and thanksgiving towards our Creator every day
