God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Something is Awry with the Timeline (part 3)
By L. S. Su

Growing up through the American public school and University system, probably the two biggest discrepancies that I've encountered from what I was taught from what I have read in the Bible is:

1. The origin of man

2. The age of man

From my last article I pointed out that whether you believe that man came into existence through evolution, through God, or some other theory, it is going to require faith. I believe it takes considerably less faith to believe that God created man than all other theories out there.

Which is easier? To believe that God created man or that we evolved from sponges or jelly fish?

Francis Crick, a non-theist Nobel prize winner and co-mapper of the human genome understood the complexity and probability of the human DNA strand coming into existence. After all he help map it. But when asked,"How did DNA come about?" Crick himself did NOT believe that DNA could spontaneously or through some evolutionary process come into existence on its own. Crick neither believed in a God. So if DNA couldn't come into existence on its own and if there was no God, then how did DNA come into existence?

Crick's reply was that space aliens brought DNA spores from another galaxy to this one. This is a faith statement and not a scientific one correct? Which is easier to believe? To believe that God is the software engineer and stored the code in a double helix or that space aliens brought DNA spores from another galaxy? Note that Cricks reply didn't answer the origin of DNA, but does move the question to another galaxy.

When I look at the many complex systems running on Earth and inside our bodies, I see intelligent design. For me, the tip off that a intelligent designer was involved is if you can spot purpose. I marvel at the engineering that goes behind things like: circular saws, old fashion mercury thermostats, and umbilical cords; yes that thing thingamabob connects the mother's placenta to the fetus. Of the three, the last mentioned is the most complex. All three serve a purpose and I have included they could not have just come about without the aid of an intelligent designer.

I recall when I went in with my wife to get a sonogram performed on her, the technician spent what I thought was in inordinate amount of time looking at the umbilical cord. After all, I was far more interested in looking at new being sucking her thumb in the womb (not the cord). The tech explained that she was looking for three lines (one vein and two arteries) inside the umbilical cord and the needed to measure the blood flow rate. One line was to bring blood (food and oxygen) to the fetus and two lines to bring waste out. Umbilical cords that don't exhibit three lines will often lead to major problems.

"Yeah, I guess that's a somewhat important thing to go examine," I recall saying to myself. I also reminded myself that this procedure wasn't about me or for my entertainment. I think this is a snare that many Americans fall into and has become a source of their unhappiness. We have built up a very strong consumption based economy where the buyer is "always right.".

I'm sure my knowledge of the umbilical cord only scratches the surface of what there is to know about this subject, but from what little I do know, the cord is a marvelous invention. It's careful design could not have been by accident. The cord's proper length is vital. Too long or too short will be problematic. Even the gelatinous casing that protects these three lines from damage and reduces the chances of the lines from being kinked could NOT just come about on its own to serve such a purposeful function. Nobody argues that the casing that protects the three copper lines in an electrical cord just came into existence on its own. Nobody says it just "naturally" appeared or that nature created it. I don't find anything natural about the casing around electrical cords or umbilical cords. Realize the latter is exponentially more complicated in design.

I feel there is a major disconnect going on. People are able to spot purpose and yet fail to see/admit that an intelligent designer must have been involved. The electrical and umbilical cord serve a purpose right? Why would these cords come into existence on its own? From my observations, things that serve a useful purpose don't come about on their own. What laws of physics would cause this to happen? 2nd law of thermodynamics -entropy? There is nothing "natural" about either of these two cords.

Time lines serve a purpose too. The genealogy given in the Bible serves a much bigger purpose that I will eventually get into. But for this article, I want to concentrate on the second question: The age of man. Can we use the Bible to determine how long man has been walking this Earth? According to this chart that I think most of academia accepts, man (aka humans) is about 80,000 years old (or 80,000 year young, depending on your perspective).

What this chart conveys is that a distant relative of ours that walked upright, but not called human, came about some 5M years ago. The Bible doesn't support the above timeline. It's through the recorded genealogy that alerts us that something is awry with the timeline.

In the first book of what Christians call the New Testament, the writer Jewish writer, disciple and apostle of Jesus provides us the lineage from the first Jew (Abraham) to the Messiah (whom Christians believe is Jesus Christ). Matthew 1 - 17

1 This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham:

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac,
Isaac the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,
Perez the father of Hezron,
Hezron the father of Ram,
4 Ram the father of Amminadab,
Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,
5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,
Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,
Obed the father of Jesse,
6 and Jesse the father of King David.
David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife,
7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam,
Rehoboam the father of Abijah,
Abijah the father of Asa,
8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,
Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram,
Jehoram the father of Uzziah,
9 Uzziah the father of Jotham,
Jotham the father of Ahaz,
Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh,
Manasseh the father of Amon,
Amon the father of Josiah,
11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.
12 After the exile to Babylon:
Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,
Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
13 Zerubbabel the father of Abihud,
Abihud the father of Eliakim,
Eliakim the father of Azor,
14 Azor the father of Zadok,
Zadok the father of Akim,
Akim the father of Elihud,
15 Elihud the father of Eleazar,
Eleazar the father of Matthan,
Matthan the father of Jacob,
16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.
17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

Biblical scholars believe this is the lineage of Jesus' Earthly father Joseph -you know Mary and Joseph, the two lawn ornaments you sometimes see around Christmas time.

The Biblical writer Luke, who was a historian, physician and accompanied the apostle Paul on his journies, takes the lineage one step futher and provides the lineage of Jesus through his Earthly mother Mary, all the way to Adam (whom Christians believe is the first man who walked the Earth). Luke 3: 24 -38

Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph,
the son of Heli, 24 the son of Matthat,
the son of Levi, the son of Melki,
the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
25 the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos,
the son of Nahum, the son of Esli,
the son of Naggai, 26 the son of Maath,
the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein,
the son of Josek, the son of Joda,
27 the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa,
the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel,
the son of Neri, 28 the son of Melki,
the son of Addi, the son of Cosam,
the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,
29 the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer,
the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat,
the son of Levi, 30 the son of Simeon,
the son of Judah, the son of Joseph,
the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim,
31 the son of Melea, the son of Menna,
the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan,
the son of David, 32 the son of Jesse,
the son of Obed, the son of Boaz,
the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon,
33 the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram,
the son of Hezron, the son of Perez,
the son of Judah, 34 the son of Jacob,
the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham,
the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,
35 the son of Serug, the son of Reu,
the son of Peleg, the son of Eber,
the son of Shelah, 36 the son of Cainan,
the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem,
the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,
37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch,
the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel,
the son of Kenan, 38 the son of Enosh,
the son of Seth, the son of Adam,
the son of God.

If the lineage above is accurate, you would be hard pressed to overlay this geneology over 80,000 years. Even more challenging to overlay this over millions of years (if you consider the first creature to walk upright as man). Post flood, something radically changed on Earth and people started living much shorter lives. Less than 120 years. I think God ordaining it had something to do with it too. Genesis 6:3

3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

But post flood, man appeared to be able to live much longer lives here on Earth. The Bible records the age of men before the flood (pre-deluvian) in Genesis 5.

This is the written account of Adam’s family line.
When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God. 2 He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind” when they were created.
3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. 4 After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5 Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.
6 When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father of Enosh. 7 After he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8 Altogether, Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.
9 When Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan. 10 After he became the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Altogether, Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died.
12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel. 13 After he became the father of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Altogether, Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died.
15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared. 16 After he became the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Altogether, Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died.
18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch. 19 After he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Altogether, Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died.
21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. 22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 24 Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.
25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. 26 After he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Altogether, Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.
28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. 29 He named him Noah and said, “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed.” 30 After Noah was born, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31 Altogether, Lamech lived a total of 777 years, and then he died.
32 After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham and Japheth.

You'd be hard pressed to add million or thousands of years between generations in order to accept both the Biblical genealogy and the timeline of man currently being taught in public schools now as true. Many of the characters in the Biblical genealogy can be link to historical events and civilizations.

So I think what some people do trying to believe both are true, is they want to interpret the Bible figuratively. But that gets difficult to do when you are talking about the lineages. So Abraham didn't really exist? How far up the genealogy do you have to go from when it moves from real people to fake people? I think people do attempt to do this same thing with the creation story. Next time let's review the Biblical creation account and see if we can overlay it onto several millions or billions of years.
