God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Words from a Prince who became a Shepherd
By L S Su
I woke up early this morning. Not sure why. I assure you it wasn't because I wasn't tired. It was still dark out as I made my way downstairs. I noticed the dull ache in my lower back and both achilles tendons was back. Usually after I have some coffee and move around some more, my body seems to loosen up and the pain depart without the need for a drug intervention.
"I wonder what it's going to be like in years to come?" I thought to myself, "Probably not better."
As I came down the stairs, I could see my dog asleep on the living room couch with 4 legs up in the air. His favorite armrest is located at the south end of couch, which he uses as a pillow. Still motionless on the couch, the eye closest to me cracked open as I noisily hobbled down the wooden stairs -trying to move without the need to move my ankles.
As soon as I started petting my dog, his white tail whipped out and started wagging back and forth. I never had a dog when I was young, so this is a nice treat for me. While continuing rub my canine's stomach, I looked out the front window. A layer of frost covered the lawn, cars, and garbage cans that were out by the curb. In Northern New Jersey, this was the first sign of rime.
"Rime?" I thought to myself. From where did I pull that word out from? "Ahh.....yes," I thought to myself. It's one of those words I learned when my hair was darker and when it didn't hurt to get out of bed; it was during a time when I was young and studying for the SAT.
This year's Autumn has progressed very differently than all others. Most of the leaves on most trees have changed and have already fallen. The trees that run down our tree lined block are now almost totally bare. What is very different this year is that all the maple trees still have their leaves and they are green -as they are during the Summer. It's as if the Maples didn't get the memo that Fall is here and it's time to do you thing -time to turn fiery red and time to leave. So as I walk my dog and walk past these large mounds of leaves, I've noticed maple trees full of green foliage standing next to bare trees.
For me in this mortal frame, Fall reminds me of the brevity of life. It just seemed like a few days ago I was studying for the SAT. It just seemed like a few days ago when I brought my daughter back from the hospital and now I'm already planning to take her to visit prospective colleges!?!? Where did the time go?
I'm reminded of this Psalm in the Bible. A Psalm is a a song of praise. Many were even put to music and sang with a full jazz ensemble. Most of the Psalms in the Bible were written by David, the shepherd boy who slew a giant and became a king. However, this particular one was written by Moses. For Christians and Jews, Moses is considered one of the greatest prophets that walked this Earth. After God met and spoke with Moses, his face would reemanate light. This alarmed and scared God's people and they asked Moses to please turn your face off -God's light on me is bothersome.
Out of all the Psalms that are in the Bible, I think without question this particular Psalm is the most philosophical of them all. And on the first few readings you are going to ask this question, "They put these words to music?" and "How is this a song of praise?"
Particularly in our American culture, it's easy to get "busy" and self absorbed on "me". We're experts on what pleases me. At the same time, it's very easy to forget the reason and the purpose why God made us and what our purpose is during this brief stint here on Earth. Consequently, there are two common perspectives the reader of this Psalm will tend to have. Either you will read this and find it depressing. Or you'll read this Psalm and find it uplifting. It's like this picture:

On the first glance, one person sees something beautiful and another person something ugly. The reason for the polar opposite feelings on this Psalm is also based on your current perspective on this life right now. If you have accepted God's very expensive but free gift to you (Jesus Christ), this world is the closest you'll come in experiencing Hell. if you haven't accepted God's free gift for you, then this world is the closest you'll come in experiencing Heaven.
The words of Moses the man of God.
Lord, you have been our dwelling place
throughout all generations.
Before the mountains were born
or you brought forth the whole world,
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
You turn people back to dust,
saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.”
A thousand years in your sight
are like a day that has just gone by,
or like a watch in the night.
Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death—
they are like the new grass of the morning:
In the morning it springs up new,
but by evening it is dry and withered.
We are consumed by your anger
and terrified by your indignation.
You have set our iniquities before you,
our secret sins in the light of your presence.
All our days pass away under your wrath;
we finish our years with a moan.
Our days may come to seventy years,
or eighty, if our strength endures;
yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow,
for they quickly pass, and we fly away.
If only we knew the power of your anger!
Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due.
Teach us to number our days,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Relent, Lord! How long will it be?
Have compassion on your servants.
Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,
that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
for as many years as we have seen trouble.
May your deeds be shown to your servants,
your splendor to their children.
May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us;
establish the work of our hands for us—
yes, establish the work of our hands.
-Psalm 90
