God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Infinite Paths to God
By Lu Su
I don’t know how many of you caught this sports movie that came out sixteen years ago called Rudy. When looking at all the sports movies that have come out within the last couple of decades (and there has been many), Rudy was named one of the best 20 sports movies by two polls conducted by ESPN. The movie is about the life of Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, who harbored dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame despite challenges and significant obstacles. In a particular scene, Rudy is seeking advice from one of the Catholic priests. He is trying to gain admission into Notre Dame University.
Rudy asks the clergyman "Is there anything more I can do? Have I prayed enough?"
"I'm sure that's not the problem," replies the priest.
"Then how can I know that I've done everything," Rudy probes.
The priest responds, "Son in all my years of theological studies, I have come to the harsh conclusion that there are only two truths I know for sure. There is a God. And I'm not Him."
Realize that acceptance of both statements has profound implications. All truth is based on basic premises which you have accepted to be true. If your foundational premises are wrong, your conclusions will be wrong. This is how truth works with physical and spiritual construction projects. So is the following statement true? There is a God. Is that true? You are not Him. Is that true too?
Now the funny thing about the way truth works is, whether something is true actually has nothing to do on whether you believe it is true or not. So if something is true, it’s true regardless of our opinion, preference or inclination. So if truth works that way, how do I know if either statement is true?
I have had the good fortune that almost all my friends believe in a God. So we have one big basic premise in common. But one common argument that often surfaces is “How can you claim that Jesus Christ is the ONLY way to God?” It’s usually said either in total indignation or in a way pitying such a stupid man for having such a myopic view on life.
So let’s back up a second. If you accept that there is a God and that you are not Him, then you yourself are rejecting most of the world views found on Earth. In other words, you too are not accepting that all paths lead to God. Think about it. If all paths can lead to God, then I want my new way to God to be by eating Baskin Robbins’ heath bar crunch ice-cream. Maybe your way can then be through Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey. And then perhaps we can start a new denomination or sect by adding rainbow sprinkles.
Why do I keep using the word "world view" instead of religion? A world view provides answers to questions that pertaining to origin, meaning, morality, and destiny. All deep questions fall into one of these four categories. Although most religions provide insight into most of these deep questions, atheists and agnostics have world views too; it would be shame not to include them by just using the word religion. Also, when people hear the word “religion”, most people then think about rituals; and get caught up in the things a person must DO in order to be a follower of that belief system. So I am using the word, “world view” in attempt to be more inclusive of people.
Accepting that there is a God and you are not Him, automatically excludes you for accepting many of the new age religions that have appeared ont he market. These new age belief systems (which actually are very ancient philosophies with a new sprinkle) are filling up book store shelves and talk show couches. Many of the new age religions state that you are a God, but you don’t know you are a God. You then need to go purge all the food out of your body, go sweat until you are sick or near death, go sit in an uncomfortable position for hours at a time, go focus your mind on a single thing, or go DO something in order to either coax the God out of you. Or for you to go DO something that allows you to better connect to the God conciousness.
Embracing that there is A God and you are not Him, not only make you reject new age religions, but forces you to reject polytheism (there are many Gods) and atheism (there is no God). If there is a God and we’re not Him is TRUE, then it isn’t reasonable to say all paths or even most paths lead to God. Truth just doesn’t work that way. Truth by definition is exclusive.
But look, I don’t have to be so narrow-minded and I want to show the readership my political prowess in the art of compromise. I too can accept there are multiple paths to God (not just one way). One of our political satirist said it best and I will leave you with his words.
"I believe that everyone has the right to their own religion, be you Hindu, Jewish or Muslim. I believe there are infinite paths to accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior." -Stephen Colbert.
