When Good Men Do Nothing (part 2 of 2)
By Lu Su

Like when a stone hits a calm pristine pool of water, the disturbance when meeting no resistance will continue to ripple out. The last time I spoke on this subject, I gave an example of how evil is able to flourish when good men do nothing. The specific example I gave was what happens when men fail to step into their role as a father. I even made the bold assertion that a fatherless home is the biggest contributing factor for the the moral decline in our country, which often leads to crime, divorce, and dependency on government.

I now want to look at another example on how one good man did nothing and the catastrophe it caused -affecting all of mankind. Yes, that includes you too. This event was so cataclysmic, it makes the problems of fatherless homes pales in comparison.

So let's back up a second. When you ask the question, what is wrong with this world, you eventually ask yourself, what is wrong with man? If man is inherently good, why do we still need conductors to check the ticket after we board a train? Before boarding an airplane, why do I need to remove your shoes and throw out a brand new bottle of contact lens solution? We pass laws that reflect our morals; so why do we still need to hire so many people to enforce them? When you look at this question, most come to the conclusion that man's morals have gone awry. Well, why? How did this happen?

When God is in the equation, the answer is because man is sinful. When God is out of the equation, then the sky is the limit on why men do evil; absent father, bad experience, unhappy childhood, felt like it, passion, need to belong, bad influences, etc.... As our society becomes more secular, we Americans are attempting change the label of sin to sickness.

Sin is lawlessness. It's rebellion to God's moral laws. If you have been with me on this journey, we've already seen that sin at its very core is destructive. The end result of sin is the breakdown of relationships. In other words, it does the opposite of what love does.

If you are able to get to this point and make the conclusion that man is sinful, which I know is a big leap -especially for those that believe man is naturally good and it "outside" influences that makes man evil. But if you can accept that man is sinful is true, then you start asking deeper questions like: Did God create us this way? If man was designed perfect, how did man acquire sin?

Both the Judeo-Christian and Islamic world view share the same Adam & Eve garden story. When you look at the Biblical narrative found in he first book of Moses called Genesis, you don't have to read very far (only chapter 3) and you see how the catastrophe all started. It's very subtle and most people miss it on the first few readings. See if you can catch it. Try to catch where man makes his first fatal error.

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"

The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "

"You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

-Genesis 3:1-6

Did you catch it? it's a little phrase that flies past most people. If you read the last sentence again, you'll see these four words: "who was with her". The text clearly says Adam was with Eve when the serpent was giving his sales pitch. Most of us know what happened after they committed sin -and it wasn't pretty. God curses the serpent, frustrates the Earth, kicks man out of the garden, and worst of all man becomes separated from God.

With so much at stake, why did Adam do nothing? Adam was the man in the relationship. He had been around longer and was probably physically stronger. Why didn't Adam give this traveling salesman the boot? Adam could have stepped in between the serpent and Eve, interrupted the conversation, and said, "Look, whatever you are selling, we're not buying. Pick up your crap and get out of my home!" Why the silence here? If there was ever a point in history that could have been altered, this was it. Why did Adam do nothing?

The results were catastrophic for mankind. Whether you take the garden of Eden story literally or figuratively, man's relationship with God hereafter was severed. We've already established that sin breaks relationships. So what's the big deal of not having a relationship with God? Well, because God doesn't lie. And God said, "but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die." -Genesis 2:17. For those of you believe that we are immortal beings, the death God was talking about was an eternal death.

Now I should point out that this is where the Judeo-Christian world view departs from Islam. The Judeo-Christian world view says because of Adam's sin, death came to all men; this means that even before you or I had a chance to contemplate what evil is, we are born out of relationship with God. Like Christianity has its many denominations, Islam has its many sects. Popular Islam tells me that Muslims do not share this concept of original sin that Adam committed and caused a wave to ripple down to all generations of man; but rather points to man's pride for the cause of sin.

Well in terms of the Judeo-Christian world view, that certainly doesn't seem fair. Someone else screws up and we have to pay the consequences? Or it doesn't seem fair that how one small decision has such big consequences? But don't both statements accurately describe real life?

I've encountered many who believe that when it comes to spiritual matters the playing field is level (i.e. you don't start with strikes against you when you step up to the plate). I understand that. They want things fair, but how is it fair that you get to be born here in the United States and not in some remote destitute village 20 km from Calcutta, India? So let me flip the situation around. Let's have it your way and assume that the playing field is level and life is fair. Let's assume Adam didn't sever your relationship with God, then it's fair for me to conclude that you are in relationship with God? Adam walked and talked to God. You still have that same intimate relationship that Adam had?

If I were to end it right here, how terribly sad this would be for all of us -forever separated from God. I want to bring you good news that there is hope for us. Christians believe that the Bible is God's Word. Written by imperfect men like you and me, but all the words were inspired by God (meaning that God wrote it by using men). And when you take all the books in the Bible together and in their context, you find an underlining theme and one day realize it is the most amazing rescue stories ever written. It's got all the good elements of a good book. There is conflict (good versus evil), resolution, a hero (Savior), and a new way of living (character development).
