Looking for God through Numbers (part 1)

So if you caught last week's Contact movie clip, you saw Jodi Foster sitting on a hood of convertible car with with her head phones on. But instead of listening to a radio frequency that we humans typically broadcast music on, she was tuned into another frequency. So let's assume that there is intelligent life out there in the Universe. With so many electro-magnetic frequencies to choose from, what frequency would another intelligent life form use to broadcast a message? The movie doesn't go into detail on this, but Jodi playing a scientist, has a hunch that intelligent being(s) would broadcast on the frequency 4.4623 GHz. Well, why that particular frequency?

This 4.4623 number comes from the "hydrogen line" (which is the frequency of the spectral line created by hydrogen = 1420.40575 MHz) and multiplying it with pi (which is the ratio of a circle's diameter to its circumference = 3.14159). When you multiple those two numbers together you get 4.4623 GHz (It's elementary dear Watson). The assumption here is that intelligent being(s), no matter where they were in the universe, would realized that hydrogen is the most common element in the Universe and pi is a pretty important mathematical constant used in geometry. I don't know, there are a lot of constants out there and why multiply the two constants? Why not add or subtract them?. Yes, pi is a universal constant, but so is the constant frown on any human's face when they step in cow pie. But I'm okay with the movie's assumption and will go along with it: Anyone broadcasting prime numbers on that particular electro-magnetic frequency, must have some intelligence.

But here is my beef. How many of us have equipment to receive radio frequencies of 4.4623 GHz? I don't know about you, but I do not have a single radio telescope. Plus if I did, my backyard couldn't accommodate all those radio telescopes hooked up in tandem that you saw in the clip. I could also ask my neighbor, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't have one to lend me. Plus, if we could receive a 4.4623 GHz signal, how many of us have equipment that could translate that signal to a frequency that we could either hear or see? 4.4623 GHz is out of the visible and audible range for humans.

In the movie Contact, a ton of things had to go right in order for Jodi to discover new intelligent life (i.e. tuned in to the "right" frequency, awake at the time the signal was received, radio telescopes pointed in the correct direction, a listening device constructed to translate an inaudible frequency to an audible one, and even working batteries to power her listening device). I think it would be fairly safe to say that if there was a stream of prime numbers being directed to Earth at the 4.4623 GHz frequency right now, we would both miss this truth -that there is intelligent life out there.

I think an intelligent being(s) who wanted to communicate with us that you and I are not alone in this Universe, would find a more obvious way. In the movie clip, you saw many devices powered by electricity (i.e. dishes, laptops, PCs, amplifiers, telephone). Without electricity, those scientists would have been dead in the water and would have been totally unable to make that discovery. So in the movie Contact, a society having electricity would be a pre-requisite in discovering this stream of prime numbers.

Those Amish people in PA, who do not use electricity, would automatically be excluded from discovering this truth. But not just them, anyone without a radio telescopes would also be automatically excluded from discovering this truth for themselves too. Again, I want to make this point. Any intelligent being(s) who wanted to communicate to humans (that we are not alone) would find a more obvious way. You know, a way that wouldn't exclude 99.999% of the Earth's population.

The Apostle Paul, living in the 1st century when electricity wasn't too prevalent, said something really profound on this very same subject.

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. -Romans 1:20

Paul is saying that the evidence for God (intelligent life) is obvious. It's clearly seen (meaning that it requires eye sight, which most humans have) and the evidence comes from "what has been made". Can a 21st century man learn from a 1st century man? I think so. Paul is giving us a huge hint here. For evidence of God (intelligence), he says to look at the creation.

Now no matter whether or not you believe in God or not, I think we are all in agreement that this stream of prime numbers shows intelligence: 2, 3, 5, 7,11, 13,17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 61, 67, 71, 73, 79, 83, 89 97, 101.

But does this stream of numbers: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987, 1597, 2584, 4181, 6765 show less intelligence? In fact, I think how to arrive at the next number in the series is even easier to teach a child than the former one. Just teach them to add any two numbers that are next to each other to get the next number. How simple is that? It's not as fancy as multiplying pi by the spectral line that hydrogen gives off when excited, but I think if those scientists on Contact received this stream of numbers, they would they have concluded that this stream show intelligence too.

Although Paul gave us a big hint, "look at what has been made", where do you start? A ton of things have already been made. There is quite a few galaxies out there. Earth alone has a ton of things to look at (e.g. plants, animals, the platypus, and even the dirt under my fingernails). Talk about needle in the haystack.

Now in the movie, they just had a single source of a stream of numbers coming from the Vega star system. if we look at the creation and find a single object that resonated either sequence of numbers, that wouldn't change the fact that either stream reflects intelligence right? You wouldn't say only one stream of numbers shows intelligence, but the other doesn't right?

Next time, let's look to see if we can find either stream of numbers in the creation (what has been made).
