Looking for God through Numbers (intro)

Last week, I concluded that God might be closer than you realize. Is it possible that His presence is everywhere, but your are failing to see it? Just like George Lucas, but without the fame or money, I've waited years before presenting the second part of the trilogy on numbers. Over three years ago, I wrote an article titled Prime Numbers. This article was the intro to an essay called Signature Seven, which happens to be a prime number the Bible closely associated with God. In that article, I provided detail evidence that God's fingerprints are all over nature (His creation). I like to return to this same subject and present part two.

When presenting evidence for existence of God, I like to use numbers. Truth can be revealed through numbers and I noticed that people seem to be able to accept truth in numbers much faster than truth in words (e.g. "Read my lips, No new taxes", "Yes we can!"). But before going on, we need to clear something up. Many people incorrectly think that truth is relative (e.g. "It's true for you, but not true for me"). This is wrong. Truth doesn't work this way. What is true doesn't change. 1+2=3 is true today, was true 5000 years ago, true on Mars, true no matter which political party is in office, and even true whether you believe it or not. This is because truth is absolute. But I do understand what causes the confusion. What happens is that many people mix up preference for truth (e.g. my favorite flavor is chocolate, but yours is coffee). So with at least the use of numbers in conveying truth, you tend to hear less of this "1+2=3 might be true for you, but not for me".

Also, when you use numbers to convey truth, you are less likely to hear the excuse this Iraqi officer offered up. If you recall, this officer was leaning against a wall and smoking a cigarette. When asked whether or not he comprehended the NO SMOKING sign written in huge letters and in three languages that he was fluent in, his reply was, "This rule doesn't apply to me. It's for other people." So with numbers, you are less likely to hear, "This rule, 1+2=3, doesn't apply to me. It's for other people"

So how can truth be unchanging? Doesn't everything in this universe change? Our bodies, the Earth, the Sun, and everyone we know are growing older (though he doesn't look it, Bart Simpson is over 30 years old now). Galaxies are shifting away from each other and our universe continues to expand. Even shows like Two and a Half Men are subject to change. So how is it possible to anchor anything if everything is in motion? Right about here, we are going to take a pretty big leap. Not a blind one, but a reasonable one.

All truth emanates from God. Since this statement might not be understood by a 5th grader, let me simplify it. All truth is from God. One really neat thing about truth is that it is ALWAYS conveyed to another person through words -either spoken or written. And numbers, which can also be used to convey truth, is simply shorthand for words.

What would be the best way for God to convey truth to us? Well, the simple answer is through words (spoken and the written word). But here is the more radical answer. What if Truth got embodied into a man and that man came to Earth, demonstrated love, and taught us truth? For the Christian, Truth has been embodied into a person; Truth has been embodied into the God man -a person who is fully God and fully man at the same time. That is why in the Bible you get some very bold statements like:

"I the LORD do not change." -Malachi 3: 6

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. -Matthew 24:35

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. -John 1:1-4

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." -John 14: 6

Okay, it's time to revisit Carl Sagan's science fiction book Contact. If you haven't guessed by now, I'm a pretty big Sci-fi fan. Most of us didn't read the book, but probably only caught the motion picture. The following is a video clip from the movie Contact starring Jodi Foster. This video clip is when she first discovers "The First Contact". Observe the excitement. But observe the stuff happening in the background. Some of these elements will play into the main article. Also, there will be a quiz immediately following the clip.

Let's see if you were paying attention:

1. What system did this arrangement of pulses come from?
2. What series of numbers was being transmitted from outer space to Earth?
3. What frequency was used in transmitting the series of numbers?

So whether you believe in God or not, are we in agreement here? This would be considered intelligence from outside our world. If we were to receive an intelligently coded stream of numbers from a certain location in the universe, we could conclude that we are not alone? Just to be able to produce and transmit that coded stream of numbers that vast distance is a sign of intelligence right? If something just like what you saw in the video clip really occurred, you would not just dismiss this event as coincidence right? .

So the pulses these actors playing scientists received were:

2, 3, 5, 7,11, 13,17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 61, 67, 71, 73, 79, 83, 89 97, 101

Is this the only stream of numbers that would denote intelligence? How about if the stream of numbers consistently allowed you to win the state lottery? I would consider that a very intelligent and lucrative stream of numbers. I think most of us would be in agreement that there would be other streams that would show intelligence. How about if Jodi Foster received this one?

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987, 1597, 2584, 4181, 6765

Both of the above streams of numbers are NOT random. It takes intelligence to produce and recognize the pattern found in both number streams. See if you can spot the pattern in the second stream. I'll give you a hint, find a number and hen look at the two numbers before it. So if you are trying to figure out why 21? Look at the two numbers before 8 and 13.
