God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Something is Awry with the Timeline (part 2)
By L. S. Su

I was sitting at my dining room table reading the newspaper. My daughter sat across from me doing her homework. I glanced over at the stack of different text books on the table. I picked up one and started reading.

"It’s long been thought we evolved from sea sponges, but new genetic research suggests that jellyfish-style creatures may have kicked off the human race."

Really? There are people in this world that believe the human race evolved from sea sponges? But now there is evidence that that former thinking was incorrect, because new evidence shows that we came from jelly fish? My youngest son will be disappointed to learn that SpongeBob Square Pants is no longer a distant relative of ours. And what about the fairness of this?

Scientist have also found evidence that jelly fish today are still exactly today as they were several millions of years ago. So some creatures evolved and some did not evolve? Based on this assigned book that my daughter was reading for AP Bio, I'd like to make a conclusion based on the author's premise. Some jelly fish evolved to the point where they could dip a McDonald's Chicken Mc Nugget into sweet and sour sauce, but most jelly fish have not.

The author uses a syllogism argument in saying that jelly fish have light receptors. Insect, reptiles, and mammals have eyes that serve as light receptors. Therefore land creatures must have come from jelly fish. I happen to have a theory too.

Some rocks are rounded and very hard. My headed is rounded and hard. Therefore man must have evolved from rocks. And just like rocks today, some evolved to become humans, but most stayed the exact same way as they were millions of years ago. And from my personal observation, I think the rocks found in South Dakota (near Mount Rushmore area) are higher in the evolutionary process than the rocks found in my back yard.

My theory really isn't that crazy, especially If you believe that all life evolved from a less complicated organism. If you believe in the evolutionary process, then at some point in time there had to a jump from when a non-living became living right? Why not rocks as the basic building blocks for life? If you don't agree, then my rebuttal will be "Well, you just need to give it more time."

One of my best friends is Indian (brown skinned). If he shaves at 9:00am, by noon he's already got a pretty thick shadow on his face. I joke with him saying that he must be pretty low on the evolutionary scale. If we truly "evolved" then this statement would have some validity.

What I find interesting is that non-theists like to pit science against religious philosophies (e.g. "my theories are based on science, but yours is based on faith"). At least when it comes to Darwin's theories of evolution (The Origin of Species), his theory is not based on science. This statement is true because of the way the word "science" is defined.

The Merriam-Webster definition of science is knowledge about or study of the natural world based on facts learned through experiments and observation. So the keyword here is "experiments". So far no person has successfully set up an experiment to permit observation that of one kind of creature turning into another.

I don't know if they still teach this today, but when I was in school (a few million years ago) I was taught that cows (i.e. the four legged creatures that walk around and go moo) returned to ocean and eventually evolved into whales. Since nobody can set up an experiment to observe this, this is just a philosophical theory and it's not based on science;. It requires faith (not science) to believe in this philosophical theory. Until you can set up this experiment and observe it, the theory that man evolved from rocks or jelly fish requires faith. Whether you believe that man evolved or that God created man, requires faith. I admit that people who believe that man evolved from jelly fish (or formerly sea sponges) exhibit far greater amounts of faith than I have.

Also realize that faith is not blind, unless you put the word "blind" in front of the word "faith". I believe that faith in God is very reasonable. I also believe that people who believed in evolution have faith based on reasonable conclusions -but definitely NOT based on science.

As far as pitting science against a theist, it's a grouping that's totally off kilter. Science is gender, age, and faith (world view)neutral. You can be an atheist and use science to prove a point. You can be a theist and use science prove a point. No world view has a monopoly on the use of science. A real quick, a world view answers questions to: origin, meaning, morality, and destiny. Atheists, Agnostics, and Theists all have their world view. And the use of science is pretty weak tool to support answers to your world view questions (especially on the last 3 questions); but science tries to get it's teeth in answering the question of origin.

So if science is philosophically neutral, then truth discovered through science should certainly NOT contradict a world view that is true. In other words, if world view and philosophy is correct, then good science shouldn't contradict the philosophical argument.

One of the biggest contradictions I have encountered with what is being taught today and what is in the Bible, is the timeline. There is something awry with the timeline that is being taught today.

We've been taught and still being taught that creatures like dinosaurs and mammals were around over 200 million years ago (mya). And notice that there is a large gap from when dinosaurs went extinct to when man evolve. The Bible doesn't support that creatures are this old. Certainly not mankind. Next time, let's delve deeper into this matter.
