Holy Cow!
By Lu Su
| Let's see. My last article was on heaven. The one before that one was on Orion the great hunter. My mind now wanders to what Orion was doing in the heavens. For those of you know your Greek mythology, you know the answer is that Orion was in battle with Taurus the bull. |

Why do we keep worshipping cows?
You know, that four legged creature that makes a "moo"
sound and eats grass. I think whenever we talk about cow worship, most people's minds turn towards India, where worship of these free roaming holy cows has been a tradition for thousands of years and continues on even today.
America is known to be a melting pot of cultures. But I would dare say that India is known to be a melting pot of diverse world views. Keep in mind that I'm
defining a world view as a set of beliefs that provide answers to questions
on origin, meaning, morality, and destiny. India offers such a diversity of world views: Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Islam, Christianity, Jainism, and I'm sure many more.
India's current human population
is estimated at 1,147,995,898. But with over 80% of the Indian population claiming that they are Hindu, that translates to 900 million people that revere the cow (the current US population is only 345 million). Reverence to the holy cow dates back to at least 1500 BC -where ancient holy text called the Vedas, encourage reverence to the four legged bovine. Now if you then add up all the people that expressed reverence to the cow from 1500 BC to now, you come to the conclusion that the cow is probably the #1 revered four legged creature on earth of all time -Holy Cow! |
| Ideas, especially revered ideas tend to spread. But as rich and ancient the India's culture is, they probably were not the civilization that started bovine worship. One school of thought is that the human civilization started in Mesopotamia and spread outwards. Besides India, it appears that many great and ancient civilizations adopted this concept as the cow being a god (or at least something to be greatly revered): Babylon, Greece, Egypt, Assyria, Persia, and Rome. One interesting facet of this cow worship common to these civilizations was that they worshipped specifically the male cow -the bull.. |

 |
| The Apis bull was originally considered to be the incarnation of the god Ptah, the creator of the universe and the master of destiny. Later the Apis became widely known as the incarnation of Osiris, god of embalming and cemeteries. These pieces date back to about 3100 BC and were often found in grave sites of many ancient Egyptians. The sun disk between the horns
represent divinity. |
 |
In Greek mythology, the Minotaur was a creature that was part man and part bull. This work of art dates back to around 1700 BC (during The Bronze Age). |
| The winged bull god Lamassu was standing at the
entrance of Assyrian palaces. Lamassu: Babylonian protective demon with a bull's body, eagle's wings, and a human head. Dates back to around 883 to 612 BC. |
|
| Roman-era bull statues guarding Ephesus, Turkey. These Greco-Roman bulls were believed to be sculpted around 200 BC. |
|
Now less you think that cow worship
is just an obscure Eastern religion or something practiced in ancient times, I want to remind
you of a well known story with Moses and Aaron. Aaron is the great grandson of Levi who performed the priestly functions of his tribe and became the very first high Priest of the Hebrews.
"And Aaron said to them, "Take off the rings of gold which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me." So all the people took off the rings of gold which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron. And he received the gold at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, and made a molten calf; and they said, "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!" -Exodus 32:2-4
This practice of cow worship was not one of the favorable exports brought out of Egypt. I think many of us will often ask ourselves, "How could Aaron and Israel do such a thing?" After all this occurred shortly after Israel saw the miraculous plagues that hit Egypt. This event occurred shortly after seeing the out of the ordinary
event of the Red Sea splitting in two and their escape while walking across on dry land. This cow worship occurred shortly after
seeing Pharaoh's armies totally devastated without the need to raise one sword. Anyone familiar with biblical account knows that God was very displeased and almost immediately, much of their population was devastated. |

The Adoration of the Golden Calf by Nicolas Poussin |
We are further reminded that this practice of cow worship is wrong because in Deuteronomy 9:7 Moses wrote about this incident "Remember this and never forget how you provoked the LORD your God to anger in the desert. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the LORD."
Just a few generations later, Samuel who was a Judge and Prophet for Israel (and believed to be the writer of the book of Judges) wrote "But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you. Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!". -Judges 10:13-14
Later King David in Psalm 106:19-21 wrote "At Horeb they made a calf and worshiped an idol cast from metal. They exchanged their Glory for an image of a bull, which eats grass. They forgot the God who saved them, who had done great things in Egypt"
But if these words of wisdom from these great men are still not convincing enough, how about words from the Creator of the Universe himself?
I think God is a pretty hip. Way before David Letterman came out with his top ten list, God made one. And the two commandments (not suggestions) that made the number 1 and 2 spot are:
1. You shall have no other gods before me.
2. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
-Deuteronomy 5:7-8
You would think that Israel
would remember have remembered such a dastardly event, but it was just a few generations
later, Israel's cow worship continued. Ten tribes of Israel succeeded from the Union and those
ten tribes took the Northern portion of the country and call
themselves Israel (probably because they were the majority). The
two other tribes called Judah and Benjamin occupied the Southern portion of the country and called themselves Judah. This event reminds me of a more recent incident where the people of South Dakota, (where the majority of the North and South Dakota population resides,) wanted to rename their state to just "Dakota". I know the proposal never got too far -Probably the people of North Dakota said "no way! You guys can be South Dakota and we'll be Dakota".
But back to the story. It was King Jeroboam, King of Israel in the Northern portion of the country, who set up two male bull idols, one in the city of Dan and the other in the city of Bethel. It was a custom that day that all Jews if physically able, were to make an annual pilgrimage to the Temple of Israel located in the city Jerusalem, in the heart of Judah's territory. For economic and political reasons, Jeroboam didn't want his citizens making a pilgrimage to his enemy's camp. For the inhabitants of the country, the Temple had ENORMOUS influence in people's lives. What I find unbelievable is the choice of words King Jeroboam used. He used the same words Aaron used centuries before, as "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt":
Jeroboam thought to himself, "The kingdom will now likely revert to the house of David. If these people go up to offer sacrifices at the temple of the LORD in Jerusalem, they will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to King Rehoboam."
After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said to the people, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt." One he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan. And this thing became a sin; the people went even as far as Dan to worship the one there. -1 Kings 12:26-30

Above is the location where we believed the calf stood in the city of Dan.
If we pause here and reflect for just a few seconds. I have noticed that these bull statutes seem to go up when the people of that country have a sense of security from their enemies. In the first case Israel no longer feared the Egyptian army. In the second case, Israel had at the time subdued all its enemies around them and had even reached its maximum territorial expansion.
Things don't seem to go well for people when these cow statues go up. It was not long after when the Assyrians came in and conquered the ten tribes. The idols were looted for their gold. The calf at Dan was carried away in the reign of Pekah by Tiglath-pileser, and the one at Bethel about ten years later, in the reign of Hoshea, by Shalmaneser (2 Kings 15:29, 17:3-6).
Now with hindsight (which tends to be 20/20) we say to ourselves "How could Aaron do such a dastardly thing?" Then we look to King Jeroboam and say, "How could a leader who was familiar with the events with Aaron and Israel, do such a evil and stupid thing?".
Some may think that cow worship is only done in India. Some may think cow worship was just some ancient Eastern or Middle East practice long ago. Now we Americans whom the vast majority claim to believe in God have also adopted this practice of worshiping cows.

The American financial institution located
on Wall Street in New York is the financial engine for our economy as well as the rest of the world. What occurs on Wall street bring stability to its citizens and
affects the stability and economic growth for all the citizens of the world. For the inhabitants of the country, the Temple (Wall Street) has ENORMOUS influence in people's lives. Cow worship talk has even entered into our language. When our country grows and thrives, the event is no longer referred to as God's blessing, but now it is called a "bull market".
I know immediately some will want to argue, "I don't bow down and worship cows". Well I would argue that the vast majority of Israelites didn't either. But God really new what he was saying because look at his word structure. God said, "You shall not bow down to them OR worship them". He did not say, "You shall not bow down to them AND worship them". Bowing and worship are two totally separate things. We are to neither bow nor are we to worship them.
I know the next thing, especially people I have made uncomfortable at this point, is to define worship in a way that provides an escape route. May I suggest that worship involves the sincere dedication of mind and spirit towards something and involves a sacrifice. May I also suggest that one of our most precious sacrifices we as humans can offer is something call time. It's very limited and totally non-renewable. Ask the people who work near these bulls how many hours they sacrifice above and beyond the norm.
I do not know where the switch is that will allow the light bulb turn on in people's heads. Perhaps if we start gold plating these bulls, people will realize that we have done an evil thing. Perhaps actors can be hired to start bowing down to the bull? Or perhaps a yellow 3M post-it on the bulls nose that reads "Here are your gods who brought you up from the land of Egypt".
So next time you are in a committee discussing what work of art we can put up to adorn a plaza or lobby, may I suggest to NOT pick a cow that eats grass. If you are simply seeking a symbol synonymous with strength, vitality and male impulsiveness, there is no need to pick a cow. No need to deliberate further. I'm available. For strength, I can bench press three times my weight (under water). I've got vitality (I've got four kids). I've got male impulsiveness too (I've got four kids).
More and more people are worshipping this false god called Success. The animal we have adopted to represent this false god once again is the cow. It is my feeling that when enough of these bull statues get placed in prominent places, our population will eventually become devastated. Now, it isn't so much because of the cow statue itself -after all it's just a piece of stone or metal. Certainly someone could sculpt a bull to the honor and glory to God. But in most cases, I just don't think that type of dedication is happening. The root of the real problem is what proceeded the false gods; the true problem is the departure of the one true God from man's heart.
