Marriage in the 21st Century (Holy Moly Guacamole)
By L S Su

It's been some time since the intro. The intro left off with something Jesus Christ had said about marriage. You see, Christians are followers of Jesus Christ. So what the leader says about stuff, is suppose to be taken to heart and followed. For Christians, Christ is our focal point and it is in Him where we anchor our moral compass. Without a Christ you have no Christian. So when you take up a complex subject like marriage, Christians should be most interested in what their leader and savior had to say about it.

Jesus definitely believed in the institution of marriage. Jesus made three references to marriage that can be broken down into the past, present, and future.

past:
People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all. It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.
-Luke 17: 27 - 29

present:
Jesus replied. “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
-Mark 10: 6 - 9

future:
Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”
-Matthew 22: 29 - 32

Past: I think it's safe to conclude that Jesus believe in Noah, a destroying flood, Abraham's nephew named Lot, a destroying rain of fire and sulfur onto the inhabitants of a city called Sodom, and that God ultimately makes judgment calls. If you recall, in a past article I established that in order to address evil on this Earth, the subject needs to be taken up with man. But surely there must be a better way in addressing evil than just destroying man. There is. It's tied up into the story on why Jesus came. However, this particular passage is not about marriage. Though Jesus mentions marriage in this passage, it's just one of many common activity that people will be doing (i.e. eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building), when He ultimately returns again (Judgment Day) and establishes His kingdom here on Earth. And just like the people that didn't enter the ark or the inhabitants of Sodom (where we get our word Sodomy), the people will be surprised on Jesus' return.

Future: For me, this is one of the most comforting statements Jesus made. "Have you not read what God said to you, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.” Here Jesus is quoting one of the old testament books of Moses. He's actually quoting himself when He was speaking to Moses through a burning bush. Apparently Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob have been resurrected from their death. And they are alive right now as you read this or else God would have said, "I WAS the God of ...." Since one of the axioms (truths) I've accepted is that God doesn't lie, then I have concluded God must bring back to life at least some people after their short stint on Earth is over. What I also find a little comforting is that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob weren't perfect people by any means. When you read about their lives, they all had some pretty big character flaws; But the one thing all three of these men seemed to have gotten right, was that they were in relationship with God.

Present: For us today, this is one of the most relevant passages in the Scriptures that has to do with marriage. If the statements that Jesus makes in Mark 10: 6 -9 is true (i.e. God made them male and female, a man will be united with his wife and become one flesh), then it's true whether you believe in the Scriptures or not. It's kind of interesting how truth works. I think most people believe that their belief is a requirement before something can be true.

If 2 + 2 = 4 is true, then it's true whether or not you have faith in arithmetic or not. Also what is true, is true whether you understand it or not. I don't fully comprehend that 2 + 2 has to equal 4, when there appears to be plenty of other good numbers out there. Seems like I'm being discriminatory when it comes to truth? This in itself is a big philosophical question. Is what is true an absolute or is what is true relative? This is too big of a question to tackle now; but realize your answer will directly affect your understanding of marriage.

Jesus makes four truth claims in Mark 10: 6 -9. For this article, I just want to focus on the last one "Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." What God has joined together? God's involved in marriage? Why would God want to involve Himself in marriage? It's such a complex institution, especially in the 21st century. The failure rate seems pretty high. Marriages often get sticky, complicated, and loaded with issues and problems. Why would God want to get involved in the first place?

I need to introduce a new word at this time. And it's not a word that you typically use in every day speech. It's like if you want to expand your understanding of electricity, you'll need to understand words that are not used in every day speech like Ohm, Joule, and Ga-zap. The word is holy.

The word, "holy" seldom comes up In everyday conversation. Well I take that back. I do hear people sometimes exclaim, "Holy cow!" every once in awhile. And I guess the holy cow's excrement is pretty popular too. I think it has its origins in the phrase "Holy cow manure!" . But "holy cow manure" took too long to say. People probably then shortened it to "holy manure" (not wanting to discriminate against other animals), but "manure" is still too long and difficult to say without moving your lips -better to have expletive that you can say without moving your lips (makes it difficult for the teacher to figure out who said it). So I think someone shortened manure to just a 4 letter word. So hence the popular exclamation "holy dung!".

What other phrase has the word "holy" in it? If I say, "holy" what word pops into your mind? If we were playing Family Feud, I think the survey might have the words holy mackerel, holy moly, Holy Bible, holy grail, holy cross, and holy matrimony.

Okay this is kind of weird. Today we seem to use the word holy in order to express shock or used in conjunction with another word tied to Christianity. I think most people reading this article have heard the term "holy matrimony", but don't fully understand it. They understand that matrimony has to do with marriage, but why stick the word "holy" in front of it? I'm going to take a wild guess and conclude that if you ask 21st century bachelors to come up with a list of qualities they'd like to see in their girlfriend, the word "holy" would not be found near the top.

The word holy simply means: Devoted to the service of God. I think the best synonym is sacred. Because it's devoted to the service of God, it's sacred. On Sundays, probably to the great dismay of young adolescents, I sometimes teach a class. Depending on the format, sometimes we gather and sit around a table that's not located in the church, but inside this converted barn. It's actually called The Goat Barn, because it once housed goats. Are the cold metal foldable chairs holy? Is the beat up and wobbly particle board table with this fake scratched up wood veneer holy? What makes it holy?

One of my kid's point of view was that it's just a stupid chair and table. But I told them it's more than just a stupid chair and table, it's stupid holy chair and a stupid holy table, because it's being devoted to the service of God. But take the same chair and table and store them in your garage and it automatically turns back into a plain old chair and table.

Before telling Moses he was the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, He told Moses to take off his smelly shoes. God then explained why. "for the place you are standing is holy ground." Exodus 3: 5. That particular piece of land was holy because God presence and physical manifestation was on that small plot of land; thus devoted to the service of God.

The term "holy matrimony" came about because marriage is sacred. God uses marriages of couples, joins them in this institution of marriage, and uses them towards God's service. Well what if I don't believe in the Bible, God, and this holy matrimony crap? My answer is that it doesn't matter whether you believe or not; if God joined you to your wife, your marriage is sacred. Like the beat up and marred table in my classroom, marriages often look the same way; but it still doesn't change the fact that they are holy.

So what evidence is there to show that marriages are being devoted to the service of God? From my personal study of the Bible, the two institutions that God uses the most in order to bless mankind is 1) government and 2) marriage. When these two institutions are righteous (i.e. faithful, loving, uncorrupt), life for the people within them flourishes. Don't forget to hug your holy wife today!
