Heaven and the Afterlife
By Lu Su
"Do you believe in heaven?", asked Jill who is my best friend's girlfriend.
This question was presented to me last Winter, in the din of a busy Irish pub/restaurant in Brookline, MA. The night air was particularly frigid, so it made the warm, cozy and welcoming establishment even more inviting. As I looked about the tavern, I thought to myself that this place probably hasn't changed much in 200 years ago. Aside from the waitresses' desire to turn the table, there was little incentive to get up and leave. Like a warm down comforter in Winter time, you often linger a bit longer than you should.
"This is a romantic setting, I had said earlier when we had first sat down. "Ah..........just the three of us."
I was a bit surprised by the question. Jill has had a very interesting spiritual journey. When she was young, she was brought up in the traditions of Judaism. Later in her life while living near San Francisco, she had regularly attended a Christian church. Now that she had returned back to the East coast, she had returned to religion of her youth. She attends synagogue regularly and celebrates all the Jewish feasts and holidays. It had never occurred to me that you could believe in God and yet question whether heaven existed or not.
I then remembered the two different party affiliations in Judaism that were around before Christianity started. (I probably should qualify that last statement by say that I remember reading about the two parties. I know I am getting old, but I'm not that old). The two different parties back then were not called the Democrats and the Republicans. Neither were the called the Whigs and the Tories, nor were they called Caesar and the Senate. There were two dominate political/religious parties back then. Politics and religion were one back in those days (and today in most Muslim countries). The two parties were the Pharisees and Sadducees. Although the great bulk of the Jewish population during the first century were not affiliated with either party. Both of these parties were considered the ruling class, because they could read, interpret the books of Moses, make laws, and enforce them. Interesting enough, the Pharisees believed that there was an afterlife; and I guess by default a heaven or at least some place that you enter into. The Sadducees did not believe in an afterlife; so I suppose by default no heaven. (A easy way to remember this is if there no heaven, that would make me Sad, You See).
I knew the very next question would either be "Why do you believe there is a heaven?" or "What is your basis for belief that there is a heaven?" To simply say that I believe in heaven because Jesus talked about heaven (as well as hell) is an excellent answer in my opinion, but probably not in their opinion. Jill was brought up under Judaism and Madhava under Hinduism. Neither of these world views accept Jesus Christ as God in the flesh -fully human and fully God. I would even dare say the incarnation of God is a unique world view shared only by Christians. Then I remembered that this very same question of whether there is a heaven and a afterlife was directed towards Jesus.
Now please to follow me here. No matter what your view of who Jesus is, the reply to the question was brilliant. So no matter who you think Jesus is (i.e. a wise man, a Rabbi gone bad, a crazed delusional man, a teacher, a prophet, or God himself), his reply to this question heaven and the afterlife was brilliant. The point I am trying to get at is that you do not have to appreciate the man, but you can still appreciate the man's answer.

So let me set the stage so you can better understand the question and the answer. Jesus is in Jerusalem and at the temple. This is not the same temple that his great great grandfather King Solomon built; that temple (the first temple) was destroyed in 586 BC by the Babylonians. Jesus is in the 2nd temple whose construction started in 535 BC and was completed by Herod the Great around 19 BC. This is the same Herod that tried to kill Jesus when he was a young child. Jesus is around 33 years old and is in the temple courtyard.
Matthew 22:23-33 reads:
That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question.
"Teacher," they said, "Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and have children for him. Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. Finally, the woman died. Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?"
Notice how legalistic nature of the question. The Sadducees were politicians, lawyers, and religious leaders all rolled up into one package. Normally when our leaders are asked a tough questions, they give vague answer that sounds good but have little meaning. Or the other tactic is to avoid the question by turning it into a joke and then steering the conversation to something you want to talk about.. Certainly in this particular case if seven brothers all died and the one single thing they all had in common was the wife, certainly some joke about Sherlock Holmes or a joke about arsenic being the woman's favorite cooking spice. You know, get the crowds laughing and then avoid the question. What is interesting is the person who asked the question did NOT believe in heaven or an afterlife. But look how direct Jesus' answer was.
Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you,'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead but of the living." When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.
Jesus says there is a heaven and he follows with a reason for why there is a heaven or an afterlife. Note the key word "IS". And it does not say "He WAS the God of Abraham". These characters are alive today: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The brilliance of this answer comes in from the fact that Jesus quotes from the Torah. Something this Sadducee accepts as true and as God's word handed through Moses. Jesus could have quoted something from one of the book of the prophets or kings, because there are many references to heaven/afterlife. Some examples. Elijah taken to heaven in a whirlwind. The witch of Endor summons Samuel who had already passed away on earth to talk to King Saul. The book of Psalms is filled with David talking about heaven. There are hundreds of references to heaven in the Bible. Jesus did not quote from any of those books because this Sadducee treated only the Torah (the books of Moses) as scripture (I guess the other books were extra curricular reading or not avaialble).
I realized that I had gotten lost in thought as two faces were starring at me with bewildered expressions on their faces. Both their faces read, "Why isn't he answering such a simple question?"
"Yes, of course," I blurted out, "I believe that there is a heaven".
