God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Semblance of the Trinity Under Your Nose
By Lu Su
A couple of days ago, while stopped at a traffic light, I watched this jogger jog on by. He was wearing this T-shirt that had writing on the back that made me burst out with laughter. It's been a long time since I read something (i.e. bumper sticker, comic strip, shirt) that brought be to laughter. His shirt was an advertisement for some Tavern. And below the Tavern's name was this logical proof.
1) Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.
2) Beer exists.
3) Therefore, God exists.
I know that Benjamin Franklin, one of the framers of the US Constitution, quoted the first line. Old Ben through his witty personality found a proof of God's existence through a wonderful beverage. I know for others, evidence of God's existence is found through nature -particularly its beauty and its complexity. But for me personally, the proof of God's existence was revealed to me again at the birth of my first child.
Although evidence of God's existence can be found through beer, nature and kin, none of these can reveal the character of God -you know what God is like. God didn't have to do this, but he willingly chose to reveal more about himself. In the Bible, what Christians believe to be God's word, God reveals that he is triune in nature. He is made of three parts: The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, but makes it very clear by saying that he is one God.
It's in our nature to shorten names; so Benjamin turns into Ben. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit turns into God or the Trinity. So when this three-in-one entity said,
"Let us make man in our own image, in our likeness," -Genesis 1:26,
I got a glimpse of the Trinity in my home. There are three parts to my family and we have separate roles, but together we function as one unit and under one name (one tax return). All members are equally important. Although it is a work in progress (especially on long road trips, a crowded mini-van, and a child that gives you only a two minute warning before he needs to go), instinct tells me that we should always be in loving relationship with each other -even when other members are annoying or disagreeable.

For those who are familiar with the creation story. In Genesis 1, God in six days is cranking along making all this stuff. God apparently was pleased with what he made because he emphatically states that "It was good" seven (7) times. So again, he signs his signature seven to his work. But in the very next chapter God suddenly says, "It is NOT good......". What the heck happened? Everything was going so good and suddenly in chapter two something is not good? Did something spoil or go rotten? Did God make something that was bad? Perhaps because of God's inexperience in making stuff, he didn't do a good job the first time? Perhaps the first model had flaws? (I sometimes hear that argument from women. "Obviously the first human had a bunch of flaws and imperfections, but God corrected them when he made the second one"). So what went wrong? Let's read to see what went awry.
"It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." -Genesis 2:18
So there was nothing wrong with anything that God had made. Everything he made was good. But the existence of man particularly in his likeness automatically caused a vacuum. So for the first time in the history of our universe, loneliness came into being. Now it is important for you to understand that God did NOT create man because he was lonely or bored. God was already involved in a perfect loving relationship. He was already in perfect community in the Trinity. But man being in God's likeness wasn't. Fortunately for the first man, he didn't have to wait long. Now two side notes here.
Being alone is neither wrong or evil. So it is not necessarily "bad" to be alone (people in bad relationships can probably side with me on this one); and "bad" is NOT necessarily the opposite of "not good". Just because you are "not hungry", does not necessarily mean that you are "full". However, it is apparent to me that when we feel lonely, that longing we feel inside drives us towards relationship. But with who or whom? Here I want to point out the obvious.
In God's infinite wisdom and what is written in God's word, God resolves the issue with man being alone NOT by bringing man a dog, an android named C3PO, or another man. God brought man a woman. Why a woman? Wouldn't the android Starfleet officer Data be a better helper in taking care of the garden? Data is far stronger and doesn't require sleep.
God didn't have to design man to be male and female; God could have designed us with a reproduction system like worms: asexual -but God didn't. Or he could have designed us with two brains (a myth that some woman already believe); and these two brains could be in perfect communion with each other -but God didn't. Also God certainly didn't have to design us so that we ever felt lonely -but God did.
He built us in his image and we share the same characteristics of our maker (i.e. happiness, anger, loneliness, frustration, love). I believe God brought woman to man so that the image on the right can more resemble the image on the left (his likeness). You don't have to be a sociologist to understand the root problem of distressed communities. The problem stems from the image (the family unit) breaking down. Notice when the image on the right is strong, when its members are loving union with each other, regardless of how much money they have or don't have our communities are stronger. When our communities are stronger, our nation as a whole is stronger. Want to help our nation? Get busy improving the relationships in your family unit, so that it better mirrors the Trinity.
