God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Mighty Warrior
By Lu Su

Seventeen years ago, Lyle Lovett launched his fourth album and called it "Joshua Judges Ruth". The album's title is made up of the names of three books that appear sequentially in old Testament of the Bible. Unfortunately, I think the Lyle's neat pun and clever lyrics were never understood by most people.

The entire book of Judges reads like a series of warrior tales. If you take the time to read the book called Judges, you'll notice this re-occurring pattern. Israel is unfaithful to the LORD. The LORD withdrawals his blessings. Israel cries for help. God responds by calling a warrior (known as a Judge) to beat back the enemy. Probably the two most famous Judges were Samson (not luggage, but the guy with the bulging muscles and a train wreck of a girlfriend named Delilah). I believe the second most popular Judge was a man called Gideon. Many of us associate trumpets with Gideon.

Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites. Because the power of Midian was so oppressive, the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in mountain clefts, caves and strongholds. Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples invaded the country. They camped on the land and ruined the crops all the way to Gaza and did not spare a living thing for Israel, neither sheep nor cattle nor donkeys. They came up with their livestock and their tents like swarms of locusts. It was impossible to count the men and their camels; they invaded the land to ravage it. Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out to the LORD for help.

When the Israelites cried to the LORD because of Midian, he sent them a prophet, who said, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. I snatched you from the power of Egypt and from the hand of all your oppressors. I drove them from before you and gave you their land. I said to you, 'I am the LORD your God; do not worship the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you live.' But you have not listened to me."

The angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior."

"But sir," Gideon replied, "if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about when they said, 'Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?' But now the LORD has abandoned us and put us into the hand of Midian."

The LORD turned to him and said, "Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian's hand. Am I not sending you?"

"But Lord, " Gideon asked, "how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family."

The LORD answered, "I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites together."

-Judges 6:1-16

At first glance, people might think that God was exhibiting humor through sarcasm when he called Gideon a "mighty warrior". Gideon himself admits that he is least in his family, belongs to the weakest clan in his tribe, and we know through history that his tribes was not one of the more influential tribes of Israel. I think a decent sports analogy would be that Gideon plays second string on his team. His team is the weakest in the conference. And of the conferences, his team belongs to the weaker one. Furthermore, Gideon didn't just return triumphantly from battle; he's called "mighty warrior" while he's threshing wheat in a winepress.

I think it is safe to say that most of us will not have the opportunity to thresh wheat in our life time. Threshing involves the very tedious process of throwing the grain stalks in the air and allowing the grain to separate from the stalks and husks. One thing that makes this task much easier is if you have wind or a breeze in order to carry the stalks and husks away -while the grain being heavier tends to fall near you. I haven't thresh wheat before, but I know enough that threshing it in a winepress cannot be easy or desirable. How much of a breeze or a wind can there be inside a winepress? But Gideon threshes wheat in a winepress, because he doesn't want to be spotted, killed, and then robbed. Gideon is flat out scared for his life.

That's when the angel of the LORD makes his appearance and calls him "mighty warrior". Realize this. God calls us by what we are to become. Before Abraham had a single offspring, God changed his name from Abram to Abraham -which means father of many. Gideon at this point of the conversation is NOT a might warrior. But God seeing with his perfect vision what these two men WILL BECOME, calls both of them by their appropriate names.

If you read on, the narrative will show that Gideon does become a mighty warrior and with only 300 men (plus this tiny miniscule thing called God's presence) takes on an army of 170,000. Judges 7:1-25

So what does this ancient warrior tale have to do with me? (For us Americans, it's all about "me"). I believe the writer of Judges wanted to show us this cyclical pattern of Israel falling in and out of love with God. I think many of us fall into this cyclical pattern with God and our spouses. You would think by now, we'd be smart enough to learn from other people's mistakes.

So let me ask you this question. If the angel of the LORD were to suddenly appear next to you (besides the possible need to change your underwear), what title do you think would be bestowed onto you? Mighty Businessman? Corrupt Accountant? Self-Centered Doctor? One blessed with much but gives others little? I don't know the title(s) people from other world views desire. But I do know that followers of Christ should long for just one title to be spoken from our LORD, "Good and faithful servant".
