God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Tears in Rain
By Lu Su
My neighbor died the other day. He was just a few years older than me. Like me he has young boys –not yet men. I think it is hard enough raising boys in a culture that emasculates men; now this feat needs to be accomplished without a man in the house. My neighbor and his wife are from families where they both were the only child in their family; consequently, my neighbor’s two sons have no uncles, aunts, cousins, and second cousins. Note that this same family unit is being willfully being built in China with their one-child policy.
So the basic unit that is most able to endure financial hardship, sickness, and difficulties is getting smaller. The basic unit that is most apt to celebrate in the joy of accomplishment, life, and character building is willfully being redefined. From my perspective, God created two basic types of institutions to bless mankind (is mankind now a politically incorrect word to use in our society?). The first institution is marriage. The second institution is government. I believe that God created these two institutions to serve as conduits to disburse blessing onto man. Now our society is now kicking God out of both of these institutions. This is certainly going to make for an interesting 21st century.
They had returned from their vacation and that same afternoon he developed back pains. He had thought that he possibly strained his back somehow when moving the luggage into his home. But despite the Tylenol, that evening the pain worsen. The emergency room ran a series of X-rays and then admitted him. The next morning he underwent a MRI scan. Incidentally, did you know the small state of New Jersey, has more MRI machines than the entire country of Canada? Perhaps this is just one small factor on why have fabulously expensive healthcare. After all it’s absolutely imperative that us New Jerseyians be able to get to an MRI machine within a 10 minutes drive and not have to wait in a line. Anyway, for those who have shared this similar experience, you know the situation is grim when the doctor that comes to tell you what is wrong is an Oncologist.
“I’m sorry ,” said the doctor “you have stage four cancer of the spine.” For those of you unfamiliar with the stages of cancer, there are no other stages after stage four. At stage four the cancer has spread too far and is inoperable. The reason why there is no stage five is because at that point the cancer has killed its host.
“How long to do I have?” asked my neighbor as he held his wife’s hand and while tears welled up in her eyes.
”A few weeks, maybe less,” replied the doctor.
My neighbor went from hospital to a hospice to the grave within four. Who knew that when he set foot out of his home, he would never set foot inside again? Who knew that when he set out on his vacation, he would never sleep in his bed again?
This is crazy. Am I the only one that finds death totally absurd? I know death is common, but just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s easy to comprehend -after all, life is common too. So one day you are holding your child and blowing zerberts on his neck and the next day your not? One day your watching your wife brush her hair and the next day your not? Everything learned is now lost? All those great experiences, emotions, and moments lost forever?
I don't think insects, fish, birds, and other animals struggle with this question. King Solomon said, "He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end." -Ecclesiastes 3:11. So if Solomon is correct, we struggle with this question because God has set eternity in our hearts. Why do such a thing?
I’m reminded of another very poetic quote about this same subject. It comes from a 1982 science fiction movie starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, and Daryl Hannah called Blade Runner. To my surprise, this movie was voted one of the top 100 movies every made. Not bad for a gloomy science fiction movie made 26 years ago. I see from 599,000 hits on Google, I’m not the only one that has been stuck by the beauty and significance of this quote. Before I give you the quote, let me set the stage so you can better understand it.
<The Characters>
Harrison Ford plays a character whose name is Deckard; he is basically an hunter/enforcer who is brought back from retirement to find this band of Replicants that have returned to Earth. These Replicants are artificial life forms that so closely resemble humans that only an expert like Deckard can differentiate. These replicants were made to serve in dangerous occupations not well suited for humans (i.e. miners, soldiers, prostitutes). Although they are made on Earth, they are deployed throughout the galaxy and are forbidden to return home. What is interesting is that these Replicants were designed with only a 3 year life span. But many do return in the search for more life. Rutger Hauer plays a very successful and highly decorated military general named Roy. It is Deckard’s grim job to hunt down the group and “retire” him. The nickname given to these Replicant killers is a Blade Runner.

<Understanding a reference point>
The above is probably one of the most recognized constellations in the sky. The three belt stars makes it easy to find. In Greek mythology, Orion was a great hunter. The star that makes up Orion’s right shoulder, called Betelgeuse (actually pronounced as beetle juice), is particularly important for any hunter. Now if you ever took the time, you can even see with the naked eye that this star is reddish in color. It’s red because the star is classified as a red giant star. It is important to realize that red giants, according to our scientist, are going to go supernova soon and so they are in their FINAL stage of life.

<Final Scene>
Enter onto the stage our two main characters Deckard and Roy into an abandoned and deteriorating building: Deckard who had hunted Roy down, is now the one being hunted. Deckard with broken fingers is weaponless. Interesting, the writer at this point, switches gears and borrows symbols and events from the most famous death scene known to mankind. I think most people failed to catch this.
Roy is dying. His 3 year life span is up. Before his imminent death, a nail (or rivet) pierces Roy's hand and he screams out in anguish and pain. The final chase scene leads them onto the roof of the building. It’s dark. It’s rainy. Deckard is dangling off the edge of the building and is about to fall to his death. Note here that in this scene, Roy (who is dying) is now looking down upon Deckard who represents the unaccepting populace. Deckard is unable to hang on and falls. Roy grabs Deckard and saves him. So the one who is rejected by society came to Earth to rescue the dying. This is where one of the most poetic lines I’ve heard is recited. General Roy says,
“I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
I watched C-beams glittering in the dark near the Tannhausser Gate.
All those moments...... will be lost in time.
Like tears in rain.
......Time to die."
This is Rutger Hauer defining moment. Turn on your speakers and watch Roy deliver his last lines in the movie. <Click Here> to see the movie clip of this final scene. Be sure to notice the last bit of imagery and symbolism as the writer uses a dove ascending into the heavens.
Is this true? Are we or are we not immortal creatures? When our physical bodies give out, will that be the end of us? The actual answer to this question is not subject to our preferences and opinions. This is a true or false question. There can only be one correct answer here. By definition, Truth is exclusive. Upon our death, will all those moments will be lost in time? Will all our memories will be lost like tears in rain?
