Something is Awry with the Timeline (part 9)
By L. S. Su

The above timeline is being taught
in schools today. The above timeline is being challenged with
some recently collected scientific data and a recent find: Not
all dinosaur bones are fully petrified. Dr. Mary Schweitzer,
associate professor of marine, earth, and atmospheric sciences
at North Carolina State University, surprised scientists in
2005 when she reported finding soft tissue (collagen) in dinosaur
bones. She started a firestorm of controversy in 2007 and 2008
when she reported that she had sequenced proteins in the dinosaur
bone. The presence of collagen in bones means there are proteins
which means there are still carbon atoms present. Scientist had
previously thought that all carbon 14 atoms would have departed
the bone after 100,000 years. If there is still carbon inside
the bones, then you can measure the age of bones by performing
radiometric carbon 14 dating on the actual bones itself than
do what scientists were doing before -using radiometric dating
method (e.g. Potassium-argon, Uranium-lead, Rubidium-strontium)
of the soil found near the bones.)
Not just Dr. Schwitzer, but other
scientists have found dinosaur bones with measurable amounts
of carbon inside the bone. But when their findings do not match
the above timeline, their findings are currently being dismissed
as "obviously wrong" by those who hold high positions
in the scientific community. I do feel it is a matter of time
before objective scientists accept that the above time line
is inaccurate, because at this point scientists would either
need prove that collagen is not being found inside dinosaur
bones or that carbon 14 radiometric dating is no longer a valid
dating method. it makes more sense to measure the age of the
fossil itself, then For this fairly recent find to be invalid,
you would either need to prove there is no carbon atoms left
in the bone or dermis
Academia's timeline above is NOT
constructed from radiometric carbon 14 dating, but from radiometric
dating (e.g. potassium-argon) of soil samples that they finds
near the fossils. If their dating methods are accurate, then
that only tells us the the age of the soil (more specifically
the age of the the volcanic ash that is in the soil) and some
type of assumption then has to be made that if you know the
age of the soil, you then know the age of the fossil. For radiometric
dating to be accurate, it must assume that the starting levels
of the radioactive isotope being measured is known. For the
Biblical timeline to be accurate, it assumes that the text is
accurate.

First of all, what academia teaches
compared to what the Bible teaches is fundamentally different.
So from the get-go, it is not possible to say both can be correct.
One school of thought is that life evolved. The other school
of thought is that life was created. The later requires intelligence,
skill and an artist's passion; and thus it requires a Creator.
The act of evolving does not require a creator, because Evolutionists
believe that life will "find a way" and moves towards
a higher and higher level of complexity on its own; and thus
no intelligent designer with supernatural powers to overcome
the 2nd law of thermodynamics (entropy) is required to make
life happen.
But academia and the Bible don't
disagree on everything. Both seem to support that some time
in the past, there was a very large flood on Earth. Both are
in agreement that land animals did walk the Earth before man,
but the timeline continues to be debated. As already mentioned,
academia is currently advocating a 75 million year gap between
dinosaur and man. The Bible advocates a much shorter gap from
the time God created land animals (dinosaurs would be lumped
into this category) and from the time God created man. To be
more specific, God created both land animals and man on the
6th day.
And
God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according
to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along
the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.”
And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their
kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the
creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds.
And God saw that it was good.
Then
God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our
likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and
the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild
animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
So
God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
God
blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase
in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish
in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living
creature that moves on the ground.”
Then
God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the
face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with
seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts
of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures
that move along the ground—everything that has the breath
of life in it—I give every green plant for food.”
And it was so.
God
saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there
was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.
-Genesis
1: 24 -27
Note that it is the 3rd paragraph
set into place a foundation, which allowed our country's forefathers
built upon it and came up with the the principal that "All
men are created equal." If you remove the above foundation,
which dictators like to do, then the principal collapses and
then the principal of might makes right (survival of the fittest)
moves in to fill the vacuum.
I think in general most people
desire to believe what teachers teach us is true; I also that
most people who believe in God desire to believe the Bible is
true too. But the timeline that is being purported from academia
and the Bible cannot both be true unless you reinterpret at
least one of them. So what I think happens is that many people
take the path of least resistance is to reinterpret the Biblical
text and turn the "day" in Genesis into millions of
years. However, from my reading and comprehension of the Bible,
interpreting the 6 days of creation in Genesis to millions of
years is problematic for several reasons:
-
The writer of creation story
in Bible, frame how long a "day" took. When you read
all the stuff that was created in six (6) days, after God completed
each day's worth a work, this phrase immediately appears "And
there was evening and then morning -the __th day." This
phrase doesn't appear just once, but 6 separate times. A person
that I have great respect for interprets the creation story
as a song. I think that's a perfectly fine interpretation; but
whether the creation story is a story or song, the words to
the chorus is still accurate correct? The writer isn't introducing
something that is flat out wrong correct? So one problem in
reinterpreting the "day" in genesis to millions of
years, then it requires you to reinterpret the length of time
on how long and "evening" and "morning"
took.
-
When you read the creation account
in Genesis or from the Torah, we see that God or Elohim created
plants on the 3rd day, birds and sea creatures on the 5th day,
and animals and man on the 6th day. I think what happens to
many people is that comprehension of so much organic life to
create in such a short period of time is too mind boggling.
Especially when people are accustomed to seeing how long tree
take to grow or how long an animal takes to go from conception
to adult; it's difficult to fathom that so much stuff can be
created in such a short period of time; so I believe what happens
is they with the aid of evolutionary timeline reinterpret "day"
to millions of years.
But as a reminder, God is outside time and space. If he is outside
these dimensions, he's not subject to time and space constraints
like things in the creation are. God thus has an infinite amount
of time to create a mature forest and can take less than a
second (in our time). The opening sentence of the creation story
tells us God is outside of time and space. "In the beginning,
God created the heavens and the earth." Realize that we
use the heavens above the earth to mark time. We have earth
to understand dimensional space. Humans are subject to time
and space constraints; God is not.
- The word "day" in Genesis or "yom" in the
Torah is NOT used in a way to suggest a long period of time (e.g.
"in the day" of the dinosaur, or "during the day"
when Ronald Regan was President). When you simply read the text,
there is nothing the way it is written to suggest that day should
be interpreted as long eras or millions of years. There is also
no precedence in any other piece of literature to interpret the
word "day" as several millions years.
