God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Humor, Prophecy, and Free-will (intro)
By Lu Su
If you are from the planet Earth and own a television set, at least one of these names has recently entered into your conversation(s): Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, and Michael Jackson. Sports fans would probably throw in the name Steve McNair. Anyone who has been forced to endure infomercials, could throw in name Billy Mays too.
As I reflected on how pervasive these individuals have been to our culture, I'm reminded about the brevity and preciousness of life. As structured and "in control" we try to make our lives, all of these individuals met a fate that was out of their control. The other week, I showed you a clip with George Burns and John Denver. Also two names that almost every American over the age of 40 recognizes. But they too have departed the Earth. I believe for the few that had time to stop and reflect on their lives, their deaths have stirred some internal realizations that may have left them in a somber mood. So here is a video to help cheer things up.

As more newspapers go out of business, I have come to the realization that future generations will probably stop reading as their main method of learning. So in the last couple of essay's I've tried to add more glitz by adding sound, light and action.
Have you ever tried to figure out what makes something funny? If you could figure out a science to what is humorous, you would become a very wealthy person. America, particularly Hollywood, pays handsomely to any individual that can make people laugh. I have come to the realization that one vital element to something funny involves a surprise -something totally unexpected. No surprise. No laughter.
Now here's a deep philosophical question. Did Jesus ever laugh? Although we know that Jesus wept -shortest verse in the Bible. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that Jesus laughed or fell down roaring with laughter (I probably should have said, "slapped his knee in laughter", because somehow picturing Jesus rolling around in laughter seems a little sacrilegious. Like you just don't usually picture holy people (like the Pope) rolling around in laughter).
Christians believe the Jesus is fully God and fully human at the same time. Christians also believe that that God is omniscient (all knowing). So Jesus had a human and a divine nature at the same time. So how could anything be funny if you always know what the punch line is going to be? How can anything be funny if you know exactly what a person is going to do before he does it? There are no unexpected actions (surprises) to God. Before those two actors (clowns) did their Michael Jackson performance on stage, God knew exactly what they would do. God even knew these two characters before they entered their mother's womb.
The next couple of weeks, I want to explore this question. I feel the answer to the question, "Does God find anything funny?" is actually tied into two very deep theological questions: How does God know what is going to happen before it happens? And if God knows what is going to happen before it happens, then do I have free will? So the short title for the topic of discussion is humor, prophecy, and free-will.
