God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Righteous Rite of Return
By Lu Su

"So what happens to people after they die?" I asked.
"That's up to God," he replied.
"Are you saying that God is going to make a judgment call at that point?", I asked.
"Yeah.... something like that", he replied. "You know that I do believe in a God, but I don't know if I believe in this heaven and hell crap". He emptied another RAW brown sugar packets into his coffee and started stirring it.
I took a sip of my coffee. I understand that it helps this company's branding, by establish a unique taste, but I have to admit that I have never been that enthralled by the taste of Starbuck's coffee. In my opinion the beans are over roasted (burnt by my standards and caramelized to perfection by theirs). This burnt taste masks almost all the complex flavors and aromas that a quality Arabica bean has to offer. Sort of like taking a really good piece of tuna and over grilling it. But don't get me wrong, I like on occasion a dark French roast coffee; but I don't want to drink dark French roasted coffee all the time. "Any feeling or thoughts on what God will be looking for?" I inquired.
He ponders the question for a bit and replied, "It's probably based on how good of a life you lived."
"So, do you think you've lived a pretty good life so far?" I asked.
He takes a sip of his coffee and with complete honesty says, "Probably like everyone else, I've had some rough moments, but I do think that I'm a pretty good person."

I think unbeknownst to my friend who doesn't consider himself "religious", he brought up the subject of righteousness. The funny thing about this concept is that people tend to compare their own righteousness with others (people). So what standard should we use? When a person says, "I'm a pretty good person", he is comparing himself with other people. When it comes to righteousness, if the standard is set by comparing yourself to other people, then we should set the standard very low so we can look good. I guess if we are able to set the limbo stick to Jeffrey Dahmer's level, we'll do just fine when it's our turn.

I think the better thing to do is to set this righteousness standard to the same level as the person you are in relationship with. So for instance, your spouse should have the same righteousness level as you or else there is going to be trouble. If you have followed me this far on this journey, I know what I am about to say will make sense to you.

God designed you for purpose. One purpose is for relationship -a relationship with God. And the relationship he wants is NOT like a employer/employee type of relationship; nor is it like a buyer/seller type of relationship. The relationship God wants with you is like a marriage -equals where you serve one another. If you take the time to read God's Word, you will see that the expressions and the similes used to describe God's relationship with Israel and God's desired relationship with us is like a marriage. Whenever Israel turned away from God, words that are typically reserved for intimate relationships (like marriage) come up -words like "unfaithful", "jealous", "repentance", "devoted", etc....

Last week Isaiah showed us that compared to God we are filthy. The week before, the Italian truck driver showed that compared to God, we are unfaithful. If we are so filthy and unfaithful, why would an all powerful God want to enter into a relationship with us? I think if we were able to comprehend just a sliver of God's righteousness, we would would understand that vast chasm between God's love for us and our love for him. Why would the God of the universe want a relationship with such a filthy and unfaithful creature like me? After all, if I could look into the hearts of either the Italian truck driver or his wife, I would NOT pursue a marriage between either one of them.

The answer is Love. God's love isn't selfish like ours. Because of this ethic of love, here is the unbelievable once in a life time offer (no rain checks). The offer is found in a little book (one of the minor prophets) called Zechariah 1:3

Therefore tell the people: This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'Return to me,' declares the LORD Almighty, 'and I will return to you,' says the LORD Almighty.

So get out of your small world and all the busyness this world has to offer. I know house, career, and family has a way of consuming 120% of your time. But listen to God's offer: "Return to me and I will return to you". Now because God has also granted us free will, he is unable to force us to take the offer. Plus forcing someone to love you, usually doesn't work out well. YOU must initiate, if you want in on the offer. But can God restore a messed up relationship like the Italian truck driver or his wife's? Both were so promiscuous. Both were so caught up doing their own thing.

The answer is "Yes". Our God appears to be one that seeks to restore us to himself. I have not read anything in the Bible that gives me the impression that God makes empty offers or false promises. These 9 words might just change your relationship for eternity, "Return to me and I will return to you". How do I know that God really wants to restore us? I found the answer is the genealogy of Jesus Christ. Matthew 1:1-17 Matthew is the first book of the New Testament. Matthew was a Jew, tax collector, and disciple of Jesus Christ.

Matthew 1

The Genealogy of Jesus

A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham:
Abraham was the father of Isaac,
         Isaac the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,
         Perez the father of Hezron,
         Hezron the father of Ram,
       Ram the father of Amminadab,
         Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
         Nahshon the father of Salmon,
Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,
Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,
         Obed the father of Jesse,
and Jesse the father of King David.
David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife,
    Solomon the father of Rehoboam,
         Rehoboam the father of Abijah,
         Abijah the father of Asa,
       Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,
         Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram,
         Jehoram the father of Uzziah,
       Uzziah the father of Jotham,
         Jotham the father of Ahaz,
         Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
       Hezekiah the father of Manasseh,
         Manasseh the father of Amon,
         Amon the father of Josiah,
and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.
    After the exile to Babylon:
Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,
         Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
       Zerubbabel the father of Abiud,
         Abiud the father of Eliakim,
         Eliakim the father of Azor,
       Azor the father of Zadok,
         Zadok the father of Akim,
         Akim the father of Eliud,
       Eliud the father of Eleazar,
         Eleazar the father of Matthan,
         Matthan the father of Jacob,
and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.

Interesting to see 3 sets of 14 here -with 14 and 42 being multiples of 7 (God's signature). Just a couple quick asides here. The above is Joseph's genealogy. Luke, a non Jew, physician, and historian traces Mary's genealogy Luke 3:21-37. Both lineages show that the Christ came through Abraham (the first Jew). If you recall your history, both Tamar and Rahab were prostitutes (and it's really strange that Rehab would choose to marry a fish). Solomon came into being after King David engages in an illicit affair with Uriah's wife Bathsheba and on top of that commits murder to try to cover it up. Christ's lineage comes through prositutes and murderers? No, these people took God's offer, returned to the Lord, and were restored..

As your toy and diecast model car advisor, I advise your to take the, "Return to me and I will return to you" offer.
