Szelian Hsu (1910 to 2013)
An Ode to Grandpa (Intro)
By L S Su
Perhaps it's because we're in the 21st century. Or perhaps it's because of the Internet, but we don't do odes any more. But one thing we still do, is death. General Douglas Mac Arthur remarked, "Old soldiers never die; they just fade away."
After a full century of life, a great man in my family line has departed this earth. Now General Hsu's trials, tribulations, and achievements have started to fade away. As strange as it may seem, I think death puts life into perspective. Like a picture frame, its purpose is to not to draw attention onto itself, but to enhance what is of value -life.
Every life has a story. And like most stories, most are told for only a short time......... and then forgotten. Soon to be lost by future generations. Lost like tears in rain. Strange how death can stir up feelings of anger and frustration.
Roughly 2,870 years ago, there once lived a man whose very great feats and accomplishments have faded away. From memory, I think he was the only man God granted a single wish. Instead of wishing for honor, death of enemies, tangible stuff, or the winning numbers to the Mega Millions + Power Ball jackpot lottery, he wished for something very different.
Solomon answered God, “You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me king in his place. Now, Lord God, let your promise to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth. Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?” -2 Chronicles 1: 8-10
Then God granted him wish and more.
"therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honor, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.” -2 Chronicles 1: 12
Listen to the words of King Solomon. Hear the words of Solomon's frustration with death. This is how he starts one of his books.
The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem:
“Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”
What do people gain from all their labors
at which they toil under the sun?
Generations come and generations go,
but the earth remains forever.
The sun rises and the sun sets,
and hurries back to where it rises.
The wind blows to the south
and turns to the north;
round and round it goes,
ever returning on its course.
All streams flow into the sea,
yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from,
there they return again.
All things are wearisome,
more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing,
nor the ear its fill of hearing.
What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.
Is there anything of which one can say,
“Look! This is something new”?
It was here already, long ago;
it was here before our time.
No one remembers the former generations,
and even those yet to come
will not be remembered
by those who follow them.
I still remember bits and pieces of my grandfather's story. Like pieces of a shattered mirror, they'll never be reassembled to clearly see the whole story. The few pieces that I have are just glimpses of another generation. Let me tell you before this memory totally fades. Szelian's story is tied in with the birth of a new country whose roots are from an ancient one.
Got 3 minutes? Let me tell you what I remember of Szelian's story.
