God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing

When it comes to any subject that relates to morals, I think there is natural reaction to get a little defensive and conclude that the writer/speaker has some sort of know-it-all smugness about himself -a "holier than thou" type of attitude. I know this is especially true when you hit a sensitive spot. With all the damaging words that many of us have taken in our youth, it has acted like shrapnel to our psyche; so now, usually you don't have to go very far on any moral subject before you hit a scar.
So let us clear the air between us. Although I think that I am too sexy for my shirt, I do NOT think for one second that I am better (or more righteous) than you. For example, I do not think that I could ever run for political office. Besides not having enough money, I know my past continues to exist. I think the opposing party would eventually produce a person from my past and get her to provide all the sensational details on what a lousy person I was. I certainly have not lived a life where if you wanted to attack my personal character, the best you could do is to go attack the righteousness of my former pastor.
So what does God's righteousness look like? Probably a good place to start is to consult a righteous person; someone that has actually seen the righteousness of God. But that could be a problem; because Romans 3:10 tells us "As i is written: 'There is none righteous, no not one". But fortunately for us, you don't have to be righteous to understand the concept of righteousness. Even dishonest people know what honesty is.
Two of the most righteous men to ever walk this earth were/are prophets named Elisha and Isaiah. Certainly a good case could be made for such a statement. If you take time to read about them, you will see that neither of them seemed to have ever made a decision out of fear or haste. They were not voted into office, so neither had a constituency that they needed to appease. Nor were they hired hands so neither had shareholders to appease or board of directors to kiss up to. From what I see, both were totally un bribable. So recorded in the Bible is the reaction Isaiah has when he encounters God. It's found in Isaiah 6:1-5
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another:
"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory."
At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.
So what is Isaiah's reaction when he encounters God? What would be your reaction if you encountered God? Maybe exchange some nice verbal pleasantries? Perhaps climb up to the thrown and give God a high five? Perhaps request a miracle? Or perhaps this is the perfect time to get some answers to questions that have been bugging him all his life. No, none of these things occur. This is Isaiah's immediate reaction:
"Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty."
Isaiah's very first reaction is to crumble when he first realizes how filthy he is; his second realization is to how filthy all the people he associates with are. A few quick asides here. Holiness is closely tied into the concept of righteousness. You really cannot have one without the other, but this is a topic for another time. Notice the word "holy" is repeated three times. Though it might sound poetic in form, there is a reason why it is repeated three times. In this ancient language, their superlatives worked differently; if you were dirty, but the Italian truck driver was even more dirty than you, in English we would say that the driver is "dirtier" than you. But in that ancient tongue you would be dirty and the Italian driver would be dirty dirty. And the person that was dirtiest would be written he is dirty dirty dirty. The last aside is that when the writer says he is "ruined", he meant he was going to physically die. Fortunately for Isaiah, detailed in Isaiah 6:6-7, something occurs that prevents him from perishing. This is totally consistent with Exodus 33:20 when God told Moses that he would die if Moses saw him.
Okay, so God's righteousness is pure pure pure; it's so pure that even the most righteous man is filthy in comparison. So what? Why is this a problem? Try to pause and contemplate this very deep question. I think understanding righteousness is relatively easy: right path or right doing. It's the application of the understanding of righteousness where most of us trip over.
It's a lot like the time when we studied Calculus. We were taught how to take the derivative of an equation (I bet the words "calculus" and "derivatives" are two words you probably haven't heard for a very long time). We learned how to solve for the derivative of an equation and got proficient at it, but most of us totally failed to understand the significance or an application of derivatives. So what? Why do I need to understand derivatives and righteousness? The answer is because it greatly impacts your life whether you care to understand it or not. By the way, the derivative of velocity is acceleration, which is something we need for a productive road trip.
