God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Lemon Poppy Righteousness (1 of 2)
By Lu Su

I feel that we have come to a point in the journey, where in order to advance spiritually,a particular term needs to be introduced and understood. I think a decent analogy is what righteousness is to a spiritual journey is what GPS navigation system is to a physical journey. From my personal studies of many different world views, this concept of "righteousness" is deeply embedded into the doctrine of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. This concept has to do with whether or not one's actions are justified (i.e. correct or right) and pleasing to God. Did you catch that last part? ...pleasing to God. So God determines what is righteous. Abraham, the founding father of the above three world views recognized this and used it in one of his most persuasive arguments to spare the inhabitants of an entire city "Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?"

Since many world views fail to even acknowledge the existence of God, I'm not sure if the word "righteousness" has any relevance. At best, since the focal point of what is righteous s not something that is external, uncaused, and unchanging, what is righteous is then something self determined. Right and wrong then becomes something relative and thus a matter of opinion. For those who subscribe to the theory that God is unknowable, then what is pleasing to God is unknowable; they then fall into the same quandary.

I find it very interesting that when some type of accounting scandal hits our country (i.e. Enron, MCI, Arthur Anderson) we start passing all these ethical conduct laws. My neighbor who has been a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) for 25+ years has become thoroughly annoyed over all these new mandatory ethic courses that he must now attend and sit through; He says the icing on the cake is that he thousands of dollars in fees he must now pay in order to be taught what is ethical accounting. In NJ and probably other states, we even have laws called Good Samaritan laws. Have you ever wondered what these "ethical" laws based on? Whatever is most beneficial to society? For the good of the people? When you hear this term "For the good of the people", red flags should go up. This is a very dangerous way to define what is ethical. I think it can be easily argued that what would be good for our society is a 20% population reduction. Perhaps start with the sick, lame, handicapped, and the elderly? If we don't make quota, we could move into a particular ethnic group. After all, this would certainly improve the remaining people's commute.

The origin (etymology) of righteousness comes from the word "right way" then translated to "right path", which eventually made its way to the concept of "right doing". The Hebrew Bible uses this concept over 500 times. The portion of the Bible originally written in Greek (what Christians call the New Testament) uses the concept of righteousness over 200 times. So for those who subscribe that the Bible is God's word, it's a very important concept to be understood. But since this concept is so closely tied in with religion, the tendency in our culture is to say, "Don't push your religion on me; leave that at home". Or "Don't impose your sense of righteousness on me; leave that for your private life". But notice when any person is wrongfully harmed or discriminated against, they suddenly want righteousness in the party doing the harm and are often desperate for justice.

This reminds me of another story that actually found it's way onto the Italian newspaper. Two Italian truck drivers, who spent much time on the road and much time in brothels, were talking one day. They would often give each other recommendations on which brothels were good and which to stay away from. One truck driver told the other, if you are ever in this particular town, you have to go to a particular brothel; and request the services of this particular woman. "She is the best I have every had", commented one driver to his friend. So the other driver, knowing his friend was a connoisseur of brothels (if a Zaggats of brothels were to be written, they would consult this guy), took his friends recommendation and routed himself to this highly recommended location to find this highly recommended woman who was highly skilled in dispensing pleasure.

It was convenient for him because it was just outside the town he lived in. So he arrived and requested the services of this particular woman. The Madame said that if he wanted the services of that particular woman, it would be a long wait because she was busy now and there were two others ahead of him. The Madame encouraged him to try the services of another, but the truck driver insisted that he would wait. So after a very long wait, he was finally escorted into a room where he did more waiting. With great anticipation the harlot finally enters the room. I am unsure who was more surprised, the Italian driver or the harlot, because woman who walked into the room was his wife! I think the reason why this story made the papers was because there was a near homicide that day; the husband nearly strangled his wife to death. This story reminds me of the Pina Colada Song (i.e. Do you like Pina Coladas? And getting caught in the rain?). Yeah, similar story but with more sleaze and the total absence of romance and music.

It is amazing how this driver's perception of right and wrong can be so one-sided? It is perfectly appropriate for him to live a particular lifestyle, but totally inappropriate for his wife to live the same way. With his sense of right and wrong so skewed, is the Italian truck driver qualified to understand the concept of righteousness? Is my son with tears in his eyes and holding half a lemon poppy muffin qualified to understand righteousness? Both my son and this truck driver were thoroughly outraged and desperate for righteousness in the other party. Now here's a very reasonable question. Does OUR sense of righteousness greatly surpass their sense of righteousness? Are we so much more qualified to understanding God's righteousness? Tune in next week (same Bat time, same Bat channel) where we explore what God's righteousness looks like.
