God and the Art of Diecast Marketing
Pause, Reflect and Adjust
By Lu Su
It’s good to be back. This little break for me did me good. I would even dare say that it was refreshing for my soul –for those of you might prescribe to such a concept. I took my whole family and got away. No emails. No computers. I didn’t even turn my cell phone on. The break from my normal routine gave me a chance to stop and reflect quite a bit on my life.
I think living in our culture, it’s particularly easy to get caught up busy-ness. And if you don’t stop to reflect every once in awhile, you won’t have the opportunity to make the right adjustments, and then before you know it, you life quickly become frustrating and unfulfilling.
One of my favorite lines that was penned by a shepherd boy, who then became a soldier, then a captain, then a general, and eventually a King; he wrote this in reverence to his maker, “Be still, and know that I am God;” –Psalm 46:10. I think that before anyone can know God, they really need to pause; and pause often. Where is your source of fulfillment going to come from? If the source of your fulfillment is not the creator, than something(s) will fill that vacuum; because nature abhors a vacuum. Will it be Money? A career that give you a lot of power? Children? Your children’s accomplishments? A big house? A new spouse? The Mets (no, better not be the Mets). Perhaps a new set of Ginsu knives? A car with Corinthian leather seats? What is going to bring you total fulfillment in your life?
I believe the giant slayer found the correct answer and attempted to point us in the right direction -if we could ever pause and “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth”. Notice the answer has nothing to do with my wants and desires.
My cousin-in-law (is that what you call someone who is marries your cousin?) works for a major bank and specifically in their Performance and Review department. His department is basically responsible for measuring the performance of all the other departments. With the recent slowdown in housing, banking, and investments, many banks and investment firms are downsizing (don’t you like that that late 20th century term for “Your Fired!”). I also find it amusing that Donald Trump has attempted to trademark this term; I wonder if he was successful. Anyway, I asked my cousin-in-law if he had any fear of being “downsized”. He shook his head and said something to the effect, “Much of the reports that they generate are actually for the general public and shareholders; and the bank is obligated by law to produce accurate reports and then disclose the information in a timely fashion.” I think the actual term he used was “due-diligence”. He then went on to say something like, “It isn’t a department that any institution can close. Accurate reports are an integral in building confidence with our shareholders, large institutions, and of course the Street.”
If businesses deem it necessary to stop, reflect, and report on how each division is doing, it seems logical to me that that we as individuals could also benefit if we too could receive independent performance reports on all the interpersonal relationships in our lives. At least the report sitting in front of you would cause you to pause and hopefully reflect. I wonder what this report look like? For the first quarter of 2008, your relationship with your daughter earned you a B+ and a C+ with your son; this is a considerable improvement from the same period one year ago. But your total lack of effort on improving things with that relative that you had a falling out with, gives you the 7th consecutive F for seven quarters now. You would have received an A- with your relationship with your spouse, but that callous and insensitive remark you made last month is going to cost you. You don’t speak to any of your customers or colleagues that way, why did you speak to someone more important like that? I want to remind you that you swore an oath in front of many witnesses to love, honor, and cherish till death. Were you lying when you made this oath?
I’m reminded of a quote from one of my favorite movies. “We are men of action, lies do not become us”. (Can you name that movie?) So men, do you want to know the fastest and easiest way to improve all your scores within your household? The answer isn’t rocket science stuff. The answer is actually quite simple. The fastest way to improve all the interpersonal relationships in your household is to take the initiative and love your wife. This very action has a cascading effect, because moms have huge influence on their kids. Moreover, how she talks to the kids about you will set their perception of you; this in turn affect your ability to influence your own kids. Understand this that the key to effective marketing and performance is to setting expectations. Love your wife and you’ll see a marked improvement within one quarter –money back guarantee.
And don’t forget it is Mother’s Day this Sunday.
