God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Model Car Marketing
Finding God with Numbers (part 1 of 2)
By Lu Su

Growing up here in American has allowed me the honor and privilege of obtaining an education through the public school system. Now I know it’s strange to hear the words “privilege” and “public school system” used in the same sentence, but I have always been grateful for the opportunity I have been given.

When it comes to the origin of life question, there seems to be an underlying assumption that neither was stated nor discussed, but just implied to be true –like it was some fact or law. That assumption is that if you get all the correct ingredients (matter), add the appropriate amounts heat (energy) and time (lots of it) life would spontaneously erupt. Remember that scene in Jurassic Park when Malcolm inside the jeep is flirting with another scientist by dripping some water onto the back of her hand and giving his thesis on Chaos theory? Something to the effect that life would always “find its way”.

All the big question that man might ask in life will tend to fall into one of four categories: origin, meaning, morality, and destiny. Science will always have difficulty in tackling these types of questions. I question whether science alone can provide meaningful answers to questions on origin, meaning, morality, and destiny. Of the four categories, the public school system has made little or no effort in addressing the last three, but seems to have made a concerted effort to answer the question on the origin of life.

Through science, I believe that I understand the basic scientific theories of Evolution. Through science, I believe I understand the basic theories of Thermodynamics. Through science, I understand what a square and a circle looks like. But to me, a “square circle” appears when you attempt to reconcile the theories of Evolution and the theories of Thermodynamics. You can understand the term square circle. You can use it in sentence. You can even create a grammatically correct sentence with the term. But when it comes time in drawing a square circle or to start building an application on it, you run into difficulties in a hurry. Engineers through calculation with numbers have proven and demonstrated that the second law of thermodynamics is true. To date, I have not encountered an engineer that denies or challenges the validity of the four laws of thermodynamics. Also note that engineers do not call it the theories of thermodynamics, but they call it LAWS of thermodynamics.

The second law of Thermodynamics is about entropy. It’s about the dissipation of energy, where objects in time release energy and thus move towards a less ordered state. Evolutionists need to either argue that the second law of Thermodynamics did not apply for VERY long periods of time or ignore what engineers deemed to be true (i.e. don’t use numbers to confuse me). It appears that these two types of scientists (Evolutionists and Engineers) seldom do talk to each other; hence their separation into different buildings on most University campuses. Like I said before, as long as you do not investigate each other’s Truth claims, everyone can be right.

The term “thermodynamics” did not come into being until 1858 and was coined by James Joule (I bet you haven’t use the word “Joule” in a sentence lately). But for argument sake, let us assume that the second law of thermodynamics did not apply until its official discovery in the 1800’s.  Let’s also assume that given all the correct ingredients, proper amounts of energy, and lots of time LIFE (without any need of an intelligent designer) would spontaneously come onto the scene. So from amino acids to enzyme to molecules to ameba to man. What are the chances of that occurring? This reminds me of the famous Infinite Monkey Theorem.

The infinite monkey theorem states that a monkey keys at ransom on a typewriter for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a particular chosen text, such as the complete work of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

monkey

Given enough time, a hypothetical chimpanzee at random would, as part of its output, almost surely produce one of Shakespeare's plays (or any other text).

What is more likely, the human DNA accidentally coming into order  or a monkey accidently typing out Hamlet in order? I think that this is a very reasonable question. I also think that it is a reasonable analogy, because here we have all the basic building blocks, the necessary energy, and lots of time (a monkey typing for infinite amount of time). Just like the evolutionists arguing that no intelligence is required, the monkey is just going to randomly type away with no purpose or intent.

Next week the calculation.
