God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Model Car Marketing
Finding God with Numbers (Intro)
By Lu Su
Easter was just last weekend. Seemed really early this year. It occurred even before the Jewish Passover. As usual, many churches in America saw higher attendances than any typical Sunday. It’s one of the holidays that will spurs typical non-church going Americans to give up their typical Sunday routine and attend a church service. Unbeknownst to most of the people in the world, the entire Christian world view spins off a single event that had occurred on the first Easter Sunday -about 2000 years ago. I heard that a poll was taken in three parts of the world where they asked people on the street, “What is the origin of Easter?”. The great majority of people in old Europe did not know the answer to this question; many new it had something to do with the church, but that is about it. People polled in the UK did slightly better, but still the majority of the people answered the question incorrectly. People in the US faired the best of the three groups, but with still less than 50% of the population got the question correct. It's a bit sad –especially for a nation that has had the least amount of influences from communism or French, German & Danish existential writers. Apparently the American marketing engine, perhaps because of its love for sports, likes to assign mascots to everything -including holidays. I thought it was a bit humorous (and at the same time sad) that many Americans answered the question that Easter had something to do with bunnies, eggs, and chicks. So the symbol for Easter is now chocolate rabbit and Thanksgiving is a steaming turkey. One day, perhaps at a later time in our journey, I would like to explore the events that occurred on the first Easter Sunday. The event has, whether people know the answer to the above question correctly or not, radically changed the entire world. But at this particular point in our journey I feel that a discussion on what exactly occurred on that first Easter Sunday would be premature. It is my hope to convince more of the readership that there is a creator or there is at least an intelligent designer, before speaking about out of the ordinary events. And speaking of ordinary, I think most men can relate to this.
I think every man at some point in has been asked been asked the dreaded question by his significant other “How do I look?” or the even more deadly question “Do I look fat in this?” How many generations of men have crashed and burned with the failure to properly and adequately answer this simple question? I'm sure some men have made the same blunder I once made; as you race to think on how you should answer this question and to carefully pick the appropriate words to use; it causes a un-natural pause before the answer is delivered. Women being far more attentive and perceptive than the average guy, immediately picks up on this; and whatever answer that comes out of your mouth is now suspect –as if you are hiding something or just plain lying. Too quick of a response is no good either; the answer was too forthcoming and thus insincere. So a perfectly time, sincere, and un hurtful answer is required. But what happens when your better half really doesn't look good in a particular outfit? Telling her, “You don’t look so hot” is NOT going to be well received and would probably hurt her feelings. A wise man gave me some good advice. He said that in this particular situation instead of saying, “You don’t look so hot”; say, “You look cool”. Same meaning, but much more positive.
I spent a couple of articles attempting to convince those who might be straddling the fence that there is an intelligent creator and he wants to be known because he left his signature on many of his great works of art. It’s kind of interesting that this intelligent designer used a number instead of an actual signed signature. My hunch is that an actual signed name would be problematic. Would you write it in cursive or print it? If you printed it, what font would you use? Would you sign it in pencil, ink or marker? How do you stop the physical mark like ink from fading? What language would you write it in? If the signature was signed it in Latin or Aramaic, most of the world’s population would not be able to read it. And if the intelligent designer actually signed his signature and used letters; I don’t think people would believe it.
Remember the movie “Oh God” with George Burns and John Denver? There is a classic scene where George (playing God) wants John to go confront a particular preacher that he is unpleased with him and to change his ways. John, who now believe that God exists, then asks God for some kind of proof that he can show people that his message is from God. George (playing God) hands John something and says, “Show them this”. Written in the center of the business card is the letters GOD. There was no title, no phone number, no address. Just a plain white business card that only three letters on it.
So signing your name with a number makes far better sense to me because all different types of people from different cultures from different time periods would understand a number in the same way. Numbers are a common denominator that all type of people of different race, ethnicity, and different time periods have in common. Plus when you use words, like to simply conveying to your spouse your opinion on how she looks, look at the potential emotional beehive that might get stirred up –possibly resulting in the end of conversation/relationship. So to avoid the emotional outrage that often occurs with the use of words, I’m going to use numbers again to try to convince some that there is order in this universe and that the existence of God (or an intelligent designer) can be found by looking at Life and Numbers (two things most people will believe exist).
Besides, is there anything that can be presented to you in writing that would convince you that God exists? Maybe if I showed you his business card? Or maybe if I walked out of a cave with stone tablets? Next week, I am going to look at life and the multiplication of numbers to try to prove my point. Many of us have never been that great in math and specifically in calculating probability; but I don't think you need to be skilled in the science of mathematics to understand next week's article. But you will need some common sense. Like, winning the the state lottery 5 times in a row is unlikely event. And winning the state lottery 50 times in a row is an even less unlikely event. If those last two sentences make sense to you, we then have some common ground.
