God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Where Evil Resides (part 1 of 2)
By L S Su
The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. -Genesis 6:5
The Bible tells us this is what went through God's mind before he judged mankind, and created a new Earth by destroying the former one with water. The Bible also tells us that He will create a new Earth but the next time he will use fire (not water) to destroy the former Earth. What seems to be the common trigger to both creation events is evil.
I seem to be living in a part of the country where gratuitous amount of evil resides. In the small state of New Jersey that I live in, the state continues to spend more money than it has. The deficit for the state worker's pension plan last year grew by over $5 billion dollars. Our little state needs $47.2 Billion dollars (yeah you heard me right, I said, "Billion" with a capital "B") more money to be placed in State's pension account in order meet future obligations that have been promised to current and former state employees.
Less than 15 miles from me, hijackers flew two airplanes into two large twin towers less than 13 years ago. Their evil act murdered thousands of people in seconds. But what I also find disturbing is before 911 occurred, a handful of the hijackers resided in a motel less than 2 miles away from where I work. I drive by that motel almost every day.
Four years ago, this man named Bernard Madoff who lived less than 15 miles away from me, defrauded his clients of almost $65 billion. He gets the prize title of orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in the history of mankind.
Three months ago, a man that lived less than 75 miles away from me entered an elementary school in Newtown, CT and murdered 20 children and 6 adults.
All four events are evil. Let me interject some comic relief. Don't know if you heard this one before. Why did the cannibal feel ill after eating a clown? Answer: The cannibal thought the clown tasted a little funny.
Don't know if you've been following this case, but just a couple of days ago, a New York police officer was just convicted of a plot to kidnap, torture, and eat women. Evil is residing much closer to us than we think. This evil guy lives just a 15 minute drive away from me. Here is some excerpts from the Associated Press.
Defense lawyers say all Internet users should worry that their online words can end up in federal court after a jury concluded that a New York police officer's plans to kidnap, kill and eat young women he knew were more than Internet chatter.
At the end of one of the most unusual federal trials ever, a jury agreed Tuesday with the government that 28-year-old Gilberto Valle wasn't just fantasizing when he conversed online with others he had never met about killing and cooking his wife and others in a cannibalism plot.
"Yes, they should be cautioned," Valle defense lawyer Robert Baum said outside court of people everywhere. "It sets a dangerous precedent."
The larger principle at stake in the trial was that "people can be prosecuted for their thoughts," Baum said, pausing before adding: "And convicted, which is even sadder to think about."
Baum had just exited federal court in Manhattan, where Valle and others at the defense table dropped their heads as the guilty verdicts were announced by a jury that had deliberated for portions of four days.
U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement: "Today, a unanimous jury found that Gilberto Valle's detailed and specific plans to abduct women for the purpose of committing grotesque crimes were very real and that he was guilty as charged. The Internet is a forum for the free exchange of ideas, but it does not confer immunity for plotting crimes and taking steps to carry out those crimes."
Marcellus McRae, a former federal prosecutor in Los Angeles now in private practice, said it was a stretch by the defense to claim Valle was prosecuted for his thoughts because the jurors were required to find that he took one or more concrete steps to carry out the conspiracy.
"It's not just a thought crime. It's a thought-and-action crime and conviction," he said.
Gatto, who said she cried with Valle after the verdict was announced, called it a "dangerous prosecution when we start opening our minds and prosecuting what's in our brains and not what's in the real world."
The jury, though, rejected the same "thought prosecution" argument she made throughout the trial.
Prosecutors said Valle plotted in lusty, lip-smacking detail to abduct, torture and cannibalize six women he knew, including his wife. While none of the women were ever harmed _ and only his wife discovered his schemes _ prosecutors said he took concrete steps to carry out his plot.
They said the New York City police officer looked up potential targets on a restricted law enforcement database; searched the Internet for how to knock someone out with chloroform and where to get torture devices and other tools; and showed up on a woman's block after striking an agreement to kidnap her for $5,000 for a New Jersey man who wanted to rape and kill her. That man was also arrested and is awaiting trial.
In one of the numerous online conversations shown to the jury, Valle told a man he met in a fetish chat room, "I want her to experience being cooked alive. She'll be trussed up like a turkey. ... She'll be terrified, screaming and crying."
In another exchange, Valle suggested a woman he knew would be easy prey because she lived alone. The men discussed cooking her, basted in olive oil, over an open fire and using her severed head as a centerpiece for a sit-down meal.
"I'm dying to eat some girl meat," Valle mused in yet another exchange.
During the trial, Valle's wife tearfully testified that she fled the couple's home with her baby and contacted the FBI after putting Internet tracking software on his computer and discovering what he was up to.
I found this case particular interesting (and it's not because I'm hungry or anything like that). Doesn't the Bill of Rights guarantee us life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? I found it interesting because Gatto did not actually abduct, torture, and cannibalize anyone ....yet. He thought/fantasized about committing evil acts of abduction, torture, and cannibalization. Maybe this is how this person pursues happiness? What is the basis for calling something good versus evil? Is what is good and evil relative -meaning what is good for you might be evil for me?
Could Jesus have been correct when he said:
But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
-Matthew 5:28
Jesus seemed to have advocated that evil occurs, even before one commits the physical act. But If that is the standard (just thinking about it), how many of us men can honestly say we have not committed adultery? Next time, let's delve deeper into this matter. I think if we can find exactly where evil resides, we have a better chance of addressing evil.
