Moses and the Prophets
By Lu Su
Is there an afterlife? And if there is an afterlife,
Will I be reincarnated into some other type of entity?
Will all my memories be lost -like tears in rain?
Will I have a physical body?
Does hell really exist? And if hell does exist,
Is it an actually place?
If I find that I don't care for it, am I allowed to leave?
Is hell just a state of mind (i.e. war, psychotic spouse, lawlessness, waiting 10 minutes in a supermarket line)?
Are there really such things as angels?
And probably the biggest and most important question:
What needs to occur in this life to change the outcome of the afterlife?
These are some really tough and deep questions pertaining to the afterlife, hell, and one actionable item. Where could one turn to in order to get answers to questions like these? Science alone is incapable of answering those questions. The study of nature (i.e. sun, moon, stars, plants) or Darwin's theories on evolution would shed no light on these types of questions.
Note that the questions are very cut and dry; each of the above questions can be answered with either a "yes" or a "no". The questions above are not questions of preference (i.e. Is chocolate your favorite flavor?), where two people can answer the same question with the opposite answer and both be correct. The questions are also not designed to make you look bad (i.e. Do you beat your spouse every day?). They questions are very straight forward true or false questions. There either is an afterlife or there is no afterlife. Hell does exist or it doesn't.
The correct answers to the above questions can only be revealed by God. Man does not have the ability in himself to self will the correct answers. Nor can in depth study of algebra or world religions provide the correct answers. Answers to deep questions like that MUST be revealed by God. Has God made such a revelation? For the followers of Jesus Christ, the answers to these questions have been revealed. "For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ." -2 Corinthians 4:6
Jesus revealed the answers to these tough questions in a parable. Now a parable is a brief story that illustrates a moral or religious lesson. Parables are NOT fables or a fairy tales. This is the parable that the Christ told:
"There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
"The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
"But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'
"He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'
"Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'
" 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'
"He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' " -Luke 16:19-31
So these back from the dead stories we occasionally hear from patients and the occasional Elvis sighting don't appear to be powerful enough occurrences to get people to repent. What does it mean to repent anyways? Repent from what? This word "repent" seems to be a key word in understanding this whole parable. And it says that we have Moses and the Prophets to steer us away from this place of torment by causing us to repent. Well then, what did Moses and the Prophets say? (Inquiring minds want to know). Stay tune next week...
