God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Car Marketing
The Correct Path

You are walking down a path trying to find the village of Truth.  In the village of Truth, all the inhabitants always speak the truth. Nearby is the village of Lies where all the inhabitants always speak lies. As you journey down the path, you come to a fork in the road. One path will lead to the village of Truth, the other path leads to the village of Lies. You do not know which path to take and there is no sign there to direct you; but even if there were signs, books, scrolls, you wouldn’t be sure if they are true or not (Does this situation sound familiar?). Fortunately, for you, there is a man walking down the path towards you. He is from one of the villages, but you do not know from which village this man is from. You have only one opportunity to ask this man one question.  In order to know which path to take, what is the question you should ask this man?

So far in our journey, it seems that we have only encountered the use of words to convey Truth. But understanding of Words is often a very subjective matter –being relative to the speaker or hearer.  (i.e. That car is red in color, that dinner was expensive, he’s tall). Or even a conversation I recently overheard:

“Is she beautiful?” inquired Joe to his best friend John who was setting him up for a blind date.
“She’s beautiful and she’s got a wonderful personality,” replied John
“Oh no, a great personality means that she must be really fat!”, said Joe. “So if the two had a contest (beauty versus personality), which would win?”
“How can you compare beauty and personality?  That’s like comparing apples to oranges,” replied John.

If you weren’t careful, it would seem that Truth could be relative. The only other tool that we (mankind) seem to have at our disposal in understanding and conveying truth is numbers.  The beauty of Numbers is it is far less subjective than Words. The number seven (7) seems to mean the same thing here or in China or even on the moon.   I think it is worth a few essays to explore this other tool and see how it relates to Truth.
