Aftershock Thoughts on Christmas
By Lu Su

Living in American, and from my perspective, Christmas has been slowly morphing into something that has little representation to what Christmas is really about. So I thought it would be wise to review what Christmas is all about -hence my last article. But it has come to my attention that many of the newer programs that read email or very powerful virus protection software will deactivate the video links.

This then might have left you scratching your head on trying to figure out what the heck I was trying to convey. My last article totally hinged on that video clip. So if you missed it, I've placed a copy of my last article on our web site and the video should roll if you click on Linus. You might want to review "What Christmas is All About" because it springboards into this one.

If you are an American and don't happen to live in a monastery, starting from Thanksgiving to Christmas you've heard this song "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year". I think in New Jersey they played that song on the airways about about a gazillion times (or is the word, 'bazillion'?). I think the US Court of Appeal judges would consider it a "safe" songs because there is no reference to Christ or God in it. So if the singer is correct that Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, than what kind of time is it now? Let's put the question in relationship to man's time here on Earth. In terms of man's existence on Earth, what kind of time is it now?

As he was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!"

"Do you see all these great buildings?" replied Jesus. "Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, "Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?"

Jesus said to them: "Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and will deceive many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. -Mark 13:1-5

In the passage above Jesus speaks words of prophecy. Actually the entire chapter is prophetic in nature. But for now, let's just focus on the first five verses of Mark 13. Jesus warns us that terrible things are to happen, but stay calm (your seat cushion can be used as a floatation device).

1. "Do you see all these great buildings? Not one stone here will be left on another".

2. "Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' " and will deceive many.

3. "When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come"

4. "There will be earthquakes in various places and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains."

The great buildings Jesus was referring to, was the Temple of Israel. In those days, it was the most most magnificent set of structures in Jerusalem. We know that the first Temple of Israel, built by King Solomon (King David's son), was adorned with a lot of precious stuff. King David, who wasn't allowed to build the temple wrote, "With all my resources I have provided for the temple of my God—gold for the gold work, silver for the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron and wood for the wood, as well as onyx for the settings, turquoise, stones of various colors, and all kinds of fine stone and marble—all of these in large quantities." - 1 Chronicles 29:2

It was King Herod (known as Herod the Great) that completed many massive construction projects -including the 2nd Temple. Even just a cursory study of this man shows that this man didn't do small time construction projects. I am sure the 2nd temple exceeded in both size and decor than the first Temple. But Jesus prediction that no stone is to be left on another seemed totally unbelievable -almost bizarre.

First of all, many of the stones were massive in size. Some were the size of cars (something you didn't want to accidentally drop on your foot). An easy prediction would be that the Temple would be destroyed and looted; but then to specifically say that no stone will be left on another seems crazy. Surely this is just figurative speech. Did Jesus mean this literally?

Instead of dismantling the walls stone by stone, wouldn't it make more sense to just do a renovation? You know convert the building to a strip mall or something. Or renovate it for another type of use (i.e. a Howard Johnson with with a Denny's restaurant adjacent to it). Why would anyone invest so much labor to physically separate each stones from each other?

It didn't take long for the first part of the prophecy to come true. About 40 years after Jesus made the statement "Not one stone here will be left on another", Roman legions under Titus in 70 AD conquered and destroyed much of Jerusalem and the Temple. The arch of Titus, located in Rome was built to commemorate this victory in Judea, depicts Roman soldiers carrying off the Menorah from the Temple.

Menorah carried away

As for "no stone left on another", we know that temple was burned. The Roman historian Josephus records:

"These Romans put the Jews to flight, and proceeded as far as the holy house itself. At which time one of the soldiers, without staying for any orders, and without any concern or dread upon him at so great an undertaking, and being hurried on by a certain divine fury, snatched some what out of the materials that were on fire, and being lifted up by another soldier, he set fire to a golden window, through which there was a passage to the rooms that were round about the holy house, on the north side of it. As the flames went upward, the Jews made a great clamour, such as so mighty an affliction required, and ran together to prevent it; and now they spared not their lives any longer, nor suffered anything to restrain their force, since that holy house was perishing . . . thus it was the holy house burnt down ."

So we know the Temple was razed by fire; and we also know that the fire occurred before the temple was looted. It is then theorized that much of the gold, silver and other precious metals that adorned the temple walls and ceiling melted and flowed in between the cracks (no mortar was used). The Roman soldiers then separated the stones to get access the precious metal. It is also theorized that the Menorah and many of the holy vessels were carried to Rome.

Jesus' second prediction "Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and will deceive many." I'm going to leave this particular prophecy for another time. Certainly there already has been many individuals that have claimed to be the Christ (God), but in my opinion all of them put together have only deceived a few. I believe that there is one who will come soon, who will actually bring peace to the Middle East. And this will be the guy that will "deceive many". Peace in the Middle East? That seems like crazy talk.

As for the third prediction, "When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come." Of all the centuries, the 20th Century was the bloodiest of them all. If left on our own, I don't know if man can survive another Century. Our weapons keep getting more deadlier. And I don't sense that the 21st century man is less selfish and less hostile than the 20th century man.

Since I have been alive, there have always been wars and rumors of more wars -so unfortunately, many of us no longer alarmed in going to war. However it is the last part of the sentence that should alarm most people, "but the end is still to come." End of what? End of shopping? End of being entertained? End of Wii Sports?

The answer to this question "End of what?" can be found in the prophetic book called Daniel. The "end" is the end of kingdoms ruled by men. I wrote extensively about this Of Prophets and Empires of Old, Connecting the Dots via Omniscience (part 1 of 2), and Connecting the Dots via Omniscience (part 2 of 2). In short Daniel interprets all the kingdoms ruled by men that were to come. We are in the last one.

"There will be earthquakes in various places and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains." Birth pains for whose arrival? The Holy Scriptures point to Christ's arrival. I couldn't help noticed the coincidence of two earthquakes occurring on Christmas Day for Americans. Christmas for over a 1600 years the birth of Christ has been established to be on December 25th.

In 2003, An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale with the its epicenter near the ancient city of Bam in Iran started at December 26, 2003 5:28am local time. Most people were still sleeping when most of the building in that city and surrounding villages were flattened. Many people were buried under rubble. President Khatami has spoken of a "national tragedy" and urged all Iranians to help the victims. The death toll amounting to 26,271 people. For most Americans, the exact time of the earthquake occurred on December 25, 2003 at 8:58am, 9:58am, or 10:58am (depending on your time zone)

In 2004, another earthquake measuring 9.1 on the Richter scale with its epicenter near Banda Ache, Sumatra, Indonesia started on December 26, 2004 at 7:58am local time. It is estimated that the Tsunami has killed nearly 230,000 people in fourteen countries. For most Americans, this exact time of the earthquake that triggered this Tsunami occurred on December 25, 2004 at 7:58pm, 8:58, or 9:58 (depending on your time zone)

Why would earthquakes occurring on Jesus' birthday have anything to do with Americans? Was this some sort of sign for us? I admit I don't know the answer to this question. Like I also don't know why God would choose the this little city called Bethlehem for the entrance point of the incarnation of God. But what I do know is that at the time of the birth, Bethlehem was in Roman territory. Rome at that time happened to be the most powerful nation in the world. So maybe God arranged all this knowing that Rome, during that time, was most able to influence the world.

So if earthquakes are like a woman's contractions before she gives birth, I don't know if the world will handle a contraction larger than 9.1.
