God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
What Christmas is All About
By Lu Su
I've noticed that over the last decade, there seems to be a concerted and systematic effort to remove God out of our lives. In the last couple of years, I've noticed that many people no longer say, "Merry Christmas" any more. I think the politically correct thing to say now is "Happy Holidays" (I guess to serve as some sort of catch-all). My guess is that "Merry Christmas" COULD be a politically correct thing to say again, but we would need to remove the Christ out of Christmas. It seems that our society has been trying for a long time to kick God out of our schools, out of the work environment, out of our court system, out of the pledge of allegiance, off our currency, off the airways, and of course out of their lives.
The U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals have upheld some of the New Jersey school district's ban on all types of Christmas music, which also includes Christmas instrumentals. This court approved the school policy that prohibits Christmas selections such as “Silent Night,” “Joy to the World,” “Oh, Come All Ye Faithful,” and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.” However, it's good to know that the Third Circuit Court of Appeals did approve selections of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Frosty the Snowman.”
What I find amazing is that the issue moves beyond certain types of words or word arrangements, but even the tune is now banned. The same Court located down in Philadelphia has also upheld the ban to prohibits people from singing Christmas Carols. But let me clarify that, in New Jersey you are still allowed to sing a Christmas Carols, as long as the songs have no religious meaning or refer to Christ. Since the judges are making specific song choices, I'm thinking of writing the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal judges (all three of them) to get their thoughts on whether or not I can still sing and dance the Macarena for my neighbors. I think the possible controversy over that song is over the fact that La Macarena is the patron saint of matadors and Spanish gypsies. So before it's banned, come 'on over. I've got matinees performances at 9:00am and 11:00am and the main performance at 8:15pm. Reservations are not required, but recommended. My do a special rendition of the Macarena with some John Travolta disco moves while I hum it to the tune of Silent Night. It's sure to put a smile on your face.
From my understanding of what Christmas is, Christmas is a national holiday that celebrates the birth of Christ. Christmas is NOT a holiday to celebrate Frosty, Rudolf, or even that jolly Old Saint Nicholas (all very good supporting actors by the way, but none of them are as good as the lead actor for Christmas). But lately, it's gone beyond music, instrumentals, and me dancing the Macarena. Recently in New Jersey, some towns have decided to removed all decorations associated with the Christmas holiday (i.e. decorated trees, star, nativity scenes) off their property.
It’s become very apparent to me that many people (including judges) are assuming that religious expression on public property is an automatic violation of our Constitutional law in regards to the separation between church and state. This is incorrect. I think more of us need to enlighten the people around us that our law is about freedom "of" religion, not freedom "from" religion.
Yes, there has been a concerted effort to remove God from us. I call it the anti-Emanuel syndrome. What I find interesting is that these same people who want us to remove all aspects of religion out of the Christmas holiday, still want to have the holiday. But Christmas is a religious holiday. Shouldn't those people who want no part of God or religion on this religious holiday be at work on December 25th?
Understand, I'm not upset or overly bothered by all this. I think this is just something that naturally happens when God is absent from people's hearts. I also know that this failure is directly due to misunderstanding why God would come to Earth in the first place.
“If God had perceived that our greatest need was economic, he would have sent an economist. If he had perceived that our greatest need was entertainment, he would have sent us a comedian or an artist. If God had perceived that our greatest need was political stability, he would have sent us a politician. If he had perceived that our greatest need was health, he would have sent us a doctor. But he perceived that our greatest need involved our sin, our alienation from him, our profound rebellion, our death; and he sent us a Savior.”- D.A. Carson.
We Americans desire a strong economy. We like to be entertained. We like political stability too. We also to like good doctors and state of the art medical facilities. These are all good things to have, but in my humble opinion they don't come close to what each of us really need most -a Savior. Since I cannot convey to you what the meaning of Christmas is any more clearly than these kids can, I'm going to let them do the talking.
So try never to say that certain uncle, certain person, or a certain event in your life has ruined Christmas. Believe it or not, it's not all about you. Christmas is about God's gift to us -a Savior. If you elect to receive this gift, nobody will be able to take away or ruin Christmas for you. So I better get this in before my state bans me from saying it. Merry Christmas! May God bless you and your family.
