By 1970, Dodge's Dart was carrying morethan it's own weight in the A-body class. Light, compact, and with the right engine, was more than enough power for any one. With Dodge's focus on the new Challenger "pony" car, Dodge revisited the A-bodies as a comfortable yet powerful "people-friendly" car, rather than competing with the Challenger. Three two-door Darts were now available: the baseline Dart Swinger, the sporty Swinger 340, and the Dart Custom, which was intended as an economical upper-end car with some classic GT options like bucket seats. A newly-designed grille was introduced, and two long narrow hood scoops replaced the hood vents from 1969.
Under the hood, Dodge dropped the bottom-end 170ci slant-six for the 198ci-125hp slant-six as a baseline standard, a move designed for both improved performance and manufacturing ease since the 198ci shared the same blockas the 225ci-145hp slant-six, another Dart engine option. A 318ci small-block two-barrel V8 rated at 230hp was the standard high-performance option, with the 340ci four-barreled small-block V8 delivering 275hp exclusive to the Swinger 340. A TorqueFlite three-speed automatic or three-speed manual transmission was offered; the three-speed manual came standard on the Swinger 340, with an optional four-speed manual with Hurst shifter. Rallye Suspension, front disc brakes, and Firm Ride shocks, coupled with the Dart's light weight and exceptional handling, still made the Swinger 340 a street contender and a pleasure to drive, since many drivers found earlier big-block Darts hard to handle.
