God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
God's Radical Ways in Preserving Man (part 1)
By Lu Su

It's been awhile since I had the opportunity to sit down to put thoughts onto a computer screen. It's not because I've been shopping at Macy's one day sales event, which actually lasts for two days. It's because a few weeks back after church, one of our youth pastors was stopping various men as they were walking to their cars. I thought Pastor Johnny was probably inviting men to an event or something. He then walked towards me, gave me a fist bump, and a warm smile. We all exchanged pleasantries

"We have all the youth leadership positions filled, except for one, " Pastor Johnny said. We just need one more volunteer to lead one of our youth groups," he said.

Like most churches, most or all of the teaching positions for the youth are filled by volunteers. But even before Johnny provided any details, I already knew which class had a leadership void. In our church there is group of boys of the same age that nobody really volunteers to take. They are rowdy, loud, mischievous, and a few were born with issues that prevent them from learning or participating in a constructive way. Just the mention of some of these boys' names, can put a look of panic and despair on some people's faces. I know this because a few years ago I led this same troop of boys.

I somehow knew when pastor Johnny ended the conversation with "Would you pray that God brings the right person to fill this important position?" I would end up with the position. When I told my wife about the conversation in the parking lot, my wife even said something to the effect of, "Don't you already have enough stress in your life?" I waited a few days in vain hope that someone else would volunteer. I called near the end of the week, but no luck. So yours truly volunteered.

So what little free time that I once had to write, is now spent on preparing and delivering a Sunday School lesson to these very rambunctious 6th grade boys. Because my wife reminded me that it's generally frowned upon to spank other parent's kids, I've been brushing up on new bribery techniques to give them an incentive to behave. Fortunately, Johnny who knows the dynamics of this class got another parent to serve as my assistant. I think Paul might have been hand picked for his size. Paul's main vocation is that he is a physical exercise trainer. So he's in the gym almost every day. He also happens to have arms the size of most men's thighs. They come in handy for putting kids in head locks. So Johnny's thinking was probably with two of us, we might have a 50/50 chance in getting this class under control. Actually it isn't that bad. They are a decent group of boys.

Because Christmas is almost here, I thought I'd remind some people what the true meaning of Christmas is all about.

First of all, I'd like to point out the obvious. Without Christ, there is no Christmas. For years now, there has been a general movement to purge God (Jesus Christ) out of our institutions and even our holidays. In America, this is the one holiday that is often filled up with a ton of activity and people forget the meaning of Christmas.

I saw this video where this man was asking shoppers, as they were walking into the mall, "What's Christmas all about?" Probably the most common answers were: Giving gifts, exchanging presents, love, peace, joy, sharing, being with family, and a time to help the people who are less fortunate. All nice and nobel, but I did noticed that the birthday boy's name seldom came up.

The gospel writer Luke, who is not related to Luke Skywalker (thought I'd throw that in as a freebie) gives us the answer to the meaning of Christmas.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” -Luke 2:8-14

A "Savior has been born!". From my observations, this world really needs a Savior. I think the longer you live, the more apt that you will come to the same conclusion. Both you and I need a Savior. Christmas is all about God's gift to us. Christmas is all about God becoming man through a physical birth.

This then begs two questions. Who is this Savior? and What do I need saving from? You might not believe me now, but "Who is Jesus Christ to you?" is the most important question you will either answer or fail to answer. Other questions like what should I eat? What should I wear? What school should I go to? What career path should I take? Who should I marry? do NOT even come close in impacting your long life to come.

I heard a good analogy. William Shakespeare wrote Hamlet. In other words, you could say that Shakespeare created Hamlet. Now for Hamlet to understand his creator, some type of external revelation would have to be given. Or another way would be if Shakespeare wrote himself into the story. God did both. He used prophets and angels for the external revelation. And then captured in the Christmas story, He wrote himself in.

What do we need saving from? This is a pretty important question to understand. Because until you understand what you need saving from, you won't think you need a Savior. Now what I find very interesting, the answer is a concept. And most of the world does not recognize the existence of this concept. Another gospel writer named Matthew, who walked, talked, and ate with Jesus gives us the answer.

She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” -Matthew 1:21

Sin is rebellion against God. Sin destroys relationships. But its worst effect is that it eternally separates us from God. We were not meant to be separated from God. So God, not desiring that we be eternally separated from him, does something very radical. He writes himself into our lives by becoming a man (with real flesh, bone, and blood) and pays the penalty for sin (death) for us. When you can get past all the layers of conceitedness that we all have, you eventually breakdown in wonder and amazement and say, "Who am I that my God would die for me?"

Christmas is about a free gift that God has offered to anyone who would accept it. You can have your relationship restored just by accepting the Christ in Christmas. I think this is a pretty radical way of preserving man.
