God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
The Perks of Faith (Intro)
By Lu Su
I would like to return to a subject and thought that I had a few weeks ago: Grow faith and fear not. The Scriptures make it very clear that God does not want his children to live in fear. And the antidote to this poison called fear apparently is something called, "faith". God apparently wants us to have more faith. But more faith in what? President Obama's stimulus package? Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke's financial wizardry? More faith in our fellow mankind? The Bible clearly points us to have more faith in Him. The stronger your faith in God, the weaker fear's stranglehold on you becomes. So that is were we left off. Grow faith and fear not.
As your spiritual journey advances, your vocabulary needs to expand too. It's something natural that happens in any subject that we advance in. If you study carpentry, you learn new words like table saw, miter, and level (see how slow your construction project advances if everyone refers to every piece of equipment as "that thingamajiggy"). If you study mountain climbing you learn new words like piton, cam, and water knot. If you study trigonometry, you learn words like angle, degrees, and cosine. If you attempt to hone your skills in tennis or golf with other men, you will encounter new curse words and new word arrangements to vent frustration and anger; my best friend once taught me how to say in his native Indian Telegu tongue, "I'm going to leap over this net and break this racquet over your head." Likewise, if you study the ultimate philosophy of science (the study of God), you'll learn new words like righteousness, sin, truth, and faith. So a really good question to ask right now is, "What is Faith?" And is it something only unscientific people can possess?
Wikipedia says that Faith is the confident belief or trust in the truth or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing. Humm.... I noticed the word "truth" popped up in defining what Faith is. So if over half our population thinks truth is relative, won't faith then be relative too? I can go along with that (Wiki's definition), but I think the Bible's definition of what faith is, is a little better.
"Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see." -Hebrews 11:1
Some people incorrectly think that Faith is blind belief in something. And that somehow Faith is something diametrically opposed to Science. NOT true. In fact, we exhibit much faith every day. Most of us have not seen electricity, yet we accept it on faith that something unseen exists. So many of us exhibit faith by knowing that it isn't a good idea to lick your fingers and stick them into an electrical outlet. Most of us have not seen the Eiffel Tower, but most have faith that it does actually exist. When you enter a new building that you have never been in, you have faith that there is breathable air inside and the laws of gravity still work in that room. Sir Francis Crick, a really smart guy, Nobel prize winner, and co-discoverer of the double-helix structure of DNA exhibits enormous amounts of faith despite his disbelief in God.
Crick had a very good handle on the overall and vast complexity of the DNA structure. And he is not the only one, many brilliant molecular biologists, mathematicians, physicists, and other scientists understand the complexity of how many things have to come together at once in order for life to exist. They also realize that the time that has passed from the Big Bang till now, is sufficient time for life to come about randomly. In his book Francis Crick's book "Life Itself", he proposed that the basic genetic structure of bacterial DNA was more probable to have come about from design than from spontaneous generation.
But what is fascinating (I'm doing my best Dr. Spock impersonation here) is that Crick does not consider that God may be that intelligent designer. It's understandable because for Crick, one of his basic axiom is that there is no God. Now I firmly believe that it takes more faith to believe that there is no God than it does to believe that there is a God, but more on this some other day. In his book, Crick understands that the DNA structure is way too complex and sides for intelligent design, but he then goes on to entertain a theory that space aliens may have brought DNA to our world from another galaxy.
Wow, when you don't have a good explanation or theory, I say move the problem to another galaxy. So the next time you forget to file that tax form, let's all propose that space aliens may have taken it back to their galaxy. So because Crick was a scientist, does that elevate his theory is on the origin of DNA as being scientific? So let me ask you, does it take more faith to believe that God created life or that alien's brought brought DNA spores from another galaxy?
So if faith is something God wants us all to have, here is a very reasonable question. Why doesn't God just give it to us? He certainly made this world with plenty of insects. Why not reduce mosquitoes levels and increase faith levels? After all, there are so many perks when we grow our faith. I noticed that when our faith in God grows 1) Fear dissipates and 2) A restoration is made possible.
Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed from that moment.-Matthew 9:22
Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour. -Matthew 15:28
He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering." -Mark 5:34
"Go," said Jesus, "your faith has healed you." Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road. -Mark 10:52
Then he said to him, "Rise and go; your faith has made you well." -Luke 17:19
With such an awesome benefits package, who wouldn't want in on this? Where can I get this thing called Faith? Can I buy it? Can I download it? And we're back to my first question. If God wants us to have faith, why not just give it to us? Who wants to live their life in fear for their livelihood, life, and relationships. Who doesn't want there life restored and made well? God, why don't you just give us what you want us to have in the first place? I know I am not the only one that has felt this tension.
Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!" -Mark 9:24
I think the answer to why God just doesn't give us faith is both deep and simple at the same time. God could have simply made himself as obvious as the Sun in the sky. But if he did, we would no longer have any atheistic or agnostic friends any more. If the question of God's existence came up, anyone could just point to the sky to see and feel Him. But God chooses to reveal himself in ways that force us to make inferences that he exists. Why not go the direct route (where it would be unarguable) instead of the indirect route? Why go the indirect route where Faith must play a role?
Next week, let's look at an actual event that occurred inside the walls of Jerusalem about 2000 years ago. I think it throws much light on the question: "If Faith is what you want me to have, why don't you just give it to me?"
