God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Former Neighbor John
By Lu Su
John and Lisa, after only a few years of marriage, dissolved their marriage last month. We Americans seem to live in such a consumer oriented society; and I think this consumption mentality spills over into our relationships. TV, telephone or computer stops working? It's not worth the time and money to repair it, just go get yourself a new one. Spouse fails to meet your expectations? it's not worth the time and money to repair the relationship, just go get yourself a new one. Go join the other 50% of the population and just get yourself a newer, sleeker, and faster model.
In a consumption oriented economy, where even our government tries very hard to figure out ways to get their citizens to spend more, the advertisements are going to skew people to believe that their quality of life will be better if they get the newer model with the newer features. Tie this concept in with the very old concept of coveting what your neighbor has and then you can instantly turn WANTS into NEEDS. I wonder how many sales have been made in history of mankind under one or both circumstances?
One day as I quietly listened to my neighbor vent his frustration, I noticed how frequently the words "my" came up and how frequently I could end his sentence with "for me." Usually when you hear the arguments from just one side of the party, you normally feel more sympathetic towards that party; This is mainly because they conveniently leave out key parts to the story. So you know how sad it is when you listen to your neighbor spill out his guts, and you feel more sympathy for his wife than him.
Funny thing happens when you spend time with people; You actually start learning more about them. John was in the restaurant business and one day hopes to get back into it. He use to be the owner or part owner (not sure) of this upscale restaurant in New York City. The kind where the appetizers start at $18 and pictures of famous people that had wandered in adorn the walls. But about ten years ago, his business collapsed two months after the Twin Towers collapsed. John told me with very high expenses and no customers, he was forced to close his doors. From my understanding the divorce of his first wife and declaration of bankruptcy occurred around the same time.
As I gulp some water down and asked John, "What's up with you and Lisa?" John had just told me that they he and Lisa already filed their separation papers. We had just finished playing tennis one of those hot Summer mornings. The kind where you know before hitting the first ball that you should have gotten to the courts and hour earlier. We were sitting on the ground by the net, near our gear. There wasn't any rush to leave because nobody was dumb enough to start playing in heat like this. John had a greenish blue towel around his neck. He reached into his tennis bag and produced a Gatorade. As he broke the seal by twisting the cap, he was about to answer; but stopped himself and instead, took a swig of this blue colored beverage.
Aside from an occasional wave or a "Hi", I don't think I've ever had a direct conversations with Lisa. But I do know here maiden name. I also know that her family comes from a lot of money. I am better acquainted with Lisa's older brother Matt, whom we both formerly attended an evening class together. One evening after class was over, we asked each other what the other did for a vocation. I told him that I sold toys, and that resulted in the common response, a smile and a response like "Oh that sounds fun." If I am not satisfied with the response I'll often will interject, "I specialize primarily in adult toys." I then let a few seconds go by and then I'll ask, "Do you need anything?" and then I usually get more of an interesting response (if not verbally, facially). Then sometimes I explain to them that most of the 1/24 and 1/18 scale diecast are for adults. For those that I don't provide a further explanation, I let their imagination run and the rumors fly.
I learned that Matt is one of the executors of the family inheritance, but that consumes very little of his time. He is considerably older than his sister Lisa because his hair is totally white (either that or he has aged very poorly). His full time job is serving as a board director for one of the family charity foundations that his grandfather set up many moons ago. Matt and a couple others on this board have the task of reviewing and evaluating applications. This foundation then gives millions of dollars away every year to charities. His tasks include traveling to the sites of these organizations, sometimes staying on site for a time, and then examining their books to make sure the money that his family gave them is being properly spent. So get this. The charity foundation that "grand pa" set up has enough money endowed in it, that these 4 to 5 million dollar annual disbursements represent only the interest and not the principal.
"Wow!" I thought to myself. "I'd be lucky if I could even purchase a single donut with the interest my checking account earns by year end". So I believe there is a little marketing lesson in this. People engaged in the art of marketing, learn this:
Money making money can make money faster than you making money. The main reason is that money making money works 24/7, 365 days a year, and 366 days a year on leap years. You are unable to put in the same hours. Now during your brief life span, there may be periods where you out perform money making money. But money making money doesn't tire and in the end will out perform. After we hit say 85 years of age, we tend to slow down (unless you are Mickey Mouse or Superman). After we hit say 100, our ability to make money with our back and elbow grease pretty much comes a screeching halt. But money making money will continue chugging along.
One evening as I help Matt push start his old Nissan Sentra in the parking lot for the second time, I asked Matt, "With all the money you help disburse every year, surely the foundation can help you afford a more reliable car?" Matt said with a grin, "Grandpa did leave us plenty of money, but grandpa was very careful to make sure money didn't ruin his kids. You see my Grandpa had a very strong work ethic." explained Matt.
I learned a class or two later that "grandpa" made it so when his progeny hit a certain age or reached certain milestone, a sum of money would be released to them.So like when one of the grand kids turned a certain age and obtained a drivers license, that new driver could go purchase a new car and the trust would pay for it. But the the amount released would only allow them to purchase a modest car and not enough for them to say go get themselves a Ferrari. Matt told me that their family trust account pays will also pay for college, but required that beneficiary to still get a part time job or a full time Summer job. If a family member was unable to afford medical insurance, the family trust would cover it. (if they are in need of it). Same concept with housing and a modest stipend to meet basic expenses. So I asked Matt if he could adopt me as a brother. Though grandpa had a ton of money, he lived his life quite frugally. Matt told me, if anyone of us want to live "high on the hog", it would be on their own dime and not on the family fortune. So this explains why Lisa and John bought a house in my neighborhood and not a few towns North, where the properties are on 7 acre lots and the rich and famous tend to gather.
"We're just like oil and water," replied John while taking another sip of his Gatorade.
"Do you two argue frequently?" I asked.
"No," replied John, "We actually seldom talk."
"Is Lisa unloving or unfaithful?" I inquired.
"No, we don't have any issues like that." he replied.
"It's just that we're not in love with each other any more," he said.
"Have you two sought counseling?" I asked.
John then replied, "I think couples only do that if they had a desire to save the marriage."
So about a month ago, I witnessed another marriage crash and burn. To my disappointment, I think I figured out what John's issue was with Lisa. I think John had married Lisa in order to get access to the family fortune. I learned from Matt, that their marital problems came shortly after John had a series of conversations with Matt -all related to accessing to getting a loan or an advance from the Trust fund. You see, the dream of running his own restaurant again superceded his desire to have a loving relationship with his wife. His wife simply served as a means to reaching his dream (or so he though).
My analysis is that John's priorities are all messed up. If I were to prioritize them, I would say: money, restaurant, and then wife. So when he found out that neither he nor Lisa could make a sizeable withdraw to re-start his business, live in the type of house he wanted to live, and drive the car he wanted to drive, John wanted out of the marriage.
"Stupid by-laws," I recall hearing from John on another occasion. "What's the purpose of having money if you aren't allowed to spend it?" That conversation came up when I was riding shot gun in John's and Lisa's new Acura TL. Apparently John wasn't satisfied driving such a car. I had pointed out to John that we are already wealthier than most of the people on this Earth. I even gave him the speech that more than 50% of the population on earth lives on less than $1.00 a day.
But that speech bounced off him with no effect. His armor was thick. His priorities very focused. I would characterize John's overall all attitude of one of general unappreciation. Now I see why his marriage had no chance.
What is interesting is that the Bible constantly uses the concept of marriage to describe the type of relationship God wants to have with us. When it comes to our relationship with God, I'm going to show you how you and I are just like my former neighbor John.
