God and the Art of Toy and Diecast Marketing
Thanksgiving and Praise
By L. S. Su

Soon millions of Americans will hit the roads, train tracks, and airways and gather at a table to eat a meal. The main course for most Americans will be turkey, which Benjamin Franklin wanted to make our national bird. It's fortunate for us that Benjamin lost the debate to other founding fathers on exactly which bird would represent the United State of America. I think it would be flat out weird for us Americans slaughtering 45 million of our national bird and then eating it. The symbolism would just seems totally wrong to me and wouldn't seem like a kosher thing to do.

What's cool about Thanksgiving is that it's an American holiday. While the rest of the world works on Thanksgiving Day, we get it off (i.e. for those of us not in retail). But what's not that cool is that in the early 21st century our culture has become more secularized. I'm defining secularization as the process where religious values and symbols lose their meaning. So for example if you go ask a typical American what the meaning of Christmas is, they can tell you what Christmas means to them; but the average American no longer knows the true meaning of Christmas.

It's just not holidays that are becoming more secularized. Even words are loosing their religious meaning. The word "Peace" when translated from the Hebrew word "Shalom" no longer has any religious significance today. Peace today for most 21st century Americans is when we get two things:

1. Cessation of hostilities and
2. You do things the way we want you to do them.

When we get both, then we Americans are at peace. This is probably one reason why we have so much trouble exporting "peace" to other countries. First of all the religious component of peace is absent -something I think is needed for a lasting peace. Secondly, if another country, nation, or organization doesn't happen to like the way we Americans define peace, then that's too bad for them; because we'll then use our armed forces to force peace onto them. But we'll only go to that extreme if the other party's "nefarious" activity interferes with our consumption of stuff that come in boxes. The more another country, nation, or organization interferes with our consumption of things that come in boxes, the more we desire to spread "peace" around the world.

Just like Christmas and concepts like peace have been secularized, the same thing has happened to the Thanksgiving holiday. I think if we changed the name from Thanksgiving to Turkey Day, it would have no affect on most of us. What I find interesting about Thanksgiving is that next week millions of Americans can be thankful, but their thankfulness will not be directed towards anything or anyone. I would think that if you are truly thankful, your gratefulness would be directed towards something; If not God, at least some type of idol. It's probably also why "and Praise" got lopped off from the name of the original name of the holiday. The way it was originally presented, the upcoming day was suppose to be a day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens". It's far easier to be thankful and have no recipient, but it's far more difficult to do with Praise.

Did you know that the Thanksgiving and Praise holiday started when us Americans were not at peace? It started during very evil days for Americans. Thanksgiving and Praise officially stated on October 3, 1836. It started during the mid point in our Civil War, where more Americans will killed than any other war. If you add up all the casualties of all the wars we fought in after the Civil War, it still would not come close to the total number of Americans killed during the Civil War.

I don't think most people realize that it was President Abraham Lincoln who initiated this religious holiday we Americans enjoy today. When the first Thanksgiving and Praise holiday started, no American knew that the war was half way over. Lincoln started this holiday when things were not great in this country and for him.

Lincoln's popularity was at an all time low. Both sides of the conflict had lost a great number of men, but the Union more than the Confederates. Soldiers were starting to desert after realizing war wasn't as glamorous as it was originally presented to them. The general attitude that this isn't what I signed up for started to sink in. Lincoln was on the verge of sacking one of his most popular generals for his total ineffectiveness in the field (up to that point). There was talk and rumors of his impeachment. Foreign powers were jockeying for position and contemplating a land grab after Americas annihilate themselves. And then after a long and hard days worth of work, Lincoln got to retire to his abode with his nutty wife Mary Todd -who really needed to be on some type of medication unavailable back then.

Most of us Americans look back and realized how great of a President he truly was. We were fortunate to have such a man at the helm during America's greatest crisis. It's unfortunate because I don't think our country could elect another Lincoln like President again, because the media has turned our elections into a popularity and beauty contest. I certainly doubt that any President today could make a similar Thanksgiving and Praise proclamation like Lincoln did. I strongly believed that Abe knew about this promise given by God, because the heart of his one paragraph proclamation is focused one of God's promises.

There is a promise in the Bible given by God. It was given to another head of state roughly 3000 years ago. And the great thing about this promise, is there is no expiration date. The promise by God goes like this:

"if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." - 2 Chronicles 7:14

I firmly believed that Lincoln knew about this promise. It's deeply embedded in Lincoln's short proclamation speech declaring Thanksgiving and Praise a national holiday. I also believe Americans 179 years ago, took the day off, and did what Lincoln asked them to do. The God I know always follows through on His promises and we have become the most prosperous country in history.

I challenge you that during this Thanksgiving, read Lincoln's short speech to your guests. It's the speech that started this national holiday for Americans.
